Mafia: The Old Country – 9 Minutes of Exclusive Gameplay | IGN First

The gameplay expanded significantly on the previous game. The world was much more reactive, and the levels were more open. Even if you think the gmaeplay was mediocre ,which it is, I agree, (I am not a fan of rockstar games), those games still have something going for them that cannot be ignored - unprecedented levels of realism and production quality. That in itself can make a game worth playing. GTA 6 will also have the same advantage.

And you keep putting words in my mouth. I never said this game needed useless minigames. I HATE open world bloat. Stop making up bullshit just so you can counter a point I never made. You're a coward.
This game, no matter how lean it is, is still pathetic because its gameplay is 10 years out of date, its presentation quality and animations is 7 years out of date, and story, no matter how good that may be, is not enough to carry a whole game. This game is worthless filler.

It's kind of ironic you say the gameplay is 10 years out of date, yet Mafia III still has better gunplay than most games within the past 10 years.

I'm actually curious what your opinion of an open world game that doesn't have sublar animations, actually has good gameplay, and came out in the past 10 years would be.

Some people seem to like to pounce onto any minute detail that doesn't meet or blow their expectations, yeah. Same goes for cherry picking freeze frames from videos in order to misrepresent a brittle point through a captured nano second. Its a shame.

I'm not going to pretend like I'm not a pessimist, but it's getting ridiculous how anal people are getting about graphics.

Maybe it's because I don't watch garbage like digital foundry, but like you said people pick apart the tiniest details.

People here need to stop being such miserable cunts, and go do something they do enjoy.

This weeks Monday update, hands on preview . . .

This ended up being too spoilery for me. I stopped the video. He goes over too much of the story and missions objectives/outcomes.

Unfortunately, the video is too spoilery so after a couple of minutes I turned down the volume and skipped to the gameplay segments. Fully convinced now. This one will be a pre-order and I can't remember when was the last time I pre-ordered something.

I stopped it too. Why would you talk about the story during a preview? Stupid.

It seems like a nice throwback to games that were made 15 years ago. Linear 3rd person cover shooters are pretty much never made nowadays. I think there is a reason for that, but this game seems like a fun time for 50$. I hope it success with that price tag. 50$ games have absolutely crushed it this year

Im really curious about this one. I was excited, but some of the recent trailers were pretty mediocre. Hopefully we get some early impression soon about the lenght and the story

Glad I didn't watch this. I just heard it contained early story spoilers. Characters and story are the big draw of a Mafia game for me. I don't want them spoiled.

I'm looking forward cautiously to Old Country. I loved Mafia 1 and 2, though I couldn't get into 3. I like the old world setting of this game, and I trust the team to deliver a good-enough story. I don't mind the shorter length - in fact, I prefer it.

My main concern is how big a focus the knife-fighting will be. I just don't find the knife combat compelling, at least when I look at it on screen. But it's hard to judge a game like this without experiencing the story and characters, so I'll wait and see.

I'm convinced most people here hate everything

Unhappy people trying to make themselves feel better by shitting on stuff. Best ignored.

Having said that, I do think there is some reason for concern. Previous Mafia games have not exactly set the charts on fire. Average review scores have been in the upper 70s, iirc. So Mafia games traditionally have problems that drag them down in the eyes of reviewers. We shouldn't be expecting this one to be a critical success.

In addition, the developers chose to show off some rather tepid stealth and knife-fighting sequences. Maybe they are proud of their work there and expected a better reaction, but the general reception hasn't been great. That suggests a possible disconnect between developer and audience.

And thirdly, as I understand it, the developers that created Mafia 3 are behind this. Mafia 3 is generally considered the worst in the franchise. I couldn't get into it myself, just found it boring. The fact that those are the same devs working on this gives me pause.

I enjoyed Mafia 1 and 2 enough to give the game a chance, but I do see how many others could be "ho hum" at this point. Personally, I like when I can find enjoyment in something other people scorn, so that doesn't bother me. The "outdated gameplay" doesn't bother me, either. In fact, I like outdated gameplay. :)

p.s. woops, sorry about the double post.

Looks like the exact same mechanics as the Mafia Remake. Is Mafia the first title to get a trilogy, remake and prequel where none of the follow ups play anything like the original? Mass Effect is close, but even less drastic. Mafia was a special game that the gaming landscape could really use another serving of. But everything I've seen of this just looks like a generic TPS with Mafia themed textures and cutscenes. You could retexture and rewrite it, and it could probably work just fine for a game in a modern or even near future setting. Did 2k not get final say over that preview before letting them post it? That stealth sequence was straight out of Xbox 360's bargain bin.

After beating Mafia 3, I understand where you're coming from with the "cause for concern" comment.

Mafia III looks good, even now, BUT cutscene quality is all over the place (between in-game and rendered cutscenes; the former has inconsistent quality and the latter looks like it's 720p or lower).

Relating to the new game, I watched a bit of the new video and the knife fighting does seem boring (and to me like a pointless mini game to pad the game out).

I'm not a mega fan of the series, and not going to buy it until it's sub $10 (or possibly until it comes to game pass), but I do like it and I'm honestly surprised to see people dismiss the ENTIRE series.

This game stands to benefit from a full decade of technological advancements in rendering, physics and AI technologies compared to Metal Gear Solid V. Much like Half Life 2 used a decade of computing advancements to build on Super Metroid, a game that came out 10 years before it.

I am excited for this game. We dont get many games like these, where the main characters have no powers and there is no fantasy. I lile realistic and grounded games and just for that reason I will get it

Something I loved in the first game that I fear will never see again was the ability to shoot while you drive.. what made it work so well was I had a steering wheel on my PC desk so I could drive with one hand and have my other hand on the mouse... I don't think I've ever experienced that with any other game and it was glorious

Will wait for Chuck Berry Chuck Berry 's verdict

Game comes out in 3 days and nowhere near top 10 on steam even with the reduced price :(

Game will flop hard sadly. Im still gonna play it, because i like Mafia games. I just hope the PC version is great and looking better than the console version. Still nothing about lenght tho. They said its linear and probably in line with 2, so im expecting around 10 hour story

There hasn't been much marketing for it at least from what I've seen.
The remake did pretty well, I'm hopeful that if this one reviews nicely as well word of mouth will do its job.

Yeah marketing is so bad they had to put up a Q&A 1 week before release to answer basic stuff that should be shown in trailers.

And it's the first time I read about ingame rewards if you have a 2K account:
Using your 2K Account, you can claim multiple rewards for Mafia: The Old Country, including the "Garzia Tumulto" Race Car just for logging in with your 2K Account, and the "Lupara Tradituri" Shotgun by signing up for newsletters for the Mafia franchise that'll keep you informed on all the latest reveals. Your rewards will be available once the game launches on August 8, 2025.

  • Unlock the "Vito's 1911" pistol by playing Mafia II: Definitive Edition, referencing Vito Scaletta's trusty sidearm.
  • Unlock the "Lincoln's Charm" charm by playing Mafia III: Definitive Edition, referencing Lincoln Clay's military training in stealth takedowns.
  • Unlock the "Racketeer" outfit by playing TopSpin 2K25, giving Enzo a vintage tennis attire in reference to Hangar 13's work on this recent 2K title.

It's a low budget title guys, I have the impression people are treating this like it were a full blown AAA production; hence mismatch between the expectations and the result

I've said it already in this thread - same thought.

It's like people forgot AA is a thing.

Expecting every single pick-up animations and polish of a AAA title... Not doable probably in their budget.

I personally believe game should be fun. Not a chore.

Gamers were complaining RDR2 was slow - mostly because of forced animations. Now some gamers are complaining this game doesn't have those.

Same thing with games taking longer dev times. Faster dev time, smaller budget? Still a problem here and there.

Me? Fun gameplay, some eurojank is fine especially in AA space but it should be fairly polished. Those stutters I saw in the footage are more of a concern to me.

I still remember Thief remake and the constant hands animations to this day. It was fine for like 30% of a game, later on not so much. Just a stop-gap between fluid gameplay, just waiting for animations to finish - it didn't help that the game had like a thousand drawers to loot.

Originals on the other hand (lmao)? Fluid fun gameplay looting not a chore. Same with Dishonored 1, D2 maybe they added more animations but it was still fine.

I just hope that it's a solid AA title and stutters I saw were a capture issue like some Indy footage for example.

Skipped Mafia 3 when it came out so I decided to finally give it a shot since the new one is coming out soon. I remember the impressions at launch saying that the game would be repetitive but I was expecting the story to hold up the experience, and it unfortunately does not. The overarching story feels disjointed and nearly every character is unlikeable in some way, especially Lincoln who comes off as a borderline psychopath.

Best part of the game is the licensed music because I grew up listening to these songs on the oldies station every day before school.

But yeah, I'm not done with the game yet (2 districts left...) but I am now very wary about Hangar 13's ability to deliver a quality original Mafia game. I know their Mafia 1 remake is supposed to be pretty good but Mafia 1 was already a good game with some rough edges.

There's a huge "Pre-order Mafia The Old Country now" banner in the main menu of Mafia 3. It takes up like half the screen lol

Wouldn't be surprised if it's also present in the Mafia 1 remake's main menu.

Never played a Mafia game, do they all play the same? Combat, stealth? I might get this one, looks good.

So there is marketing for people who are playing a Mafia game, but for those who aren't the point stands.
Unless you actively go look for it, there isn't much about the game being shown to the world.
At least I haven't seen anything of the sorts like ads and such.

But I'm hopeful. The game is relatively cheap, I think Hangar 13 has been doing well with the franchise in terms of stories and characters, if this one is also good I do think word of mouth will make it sell well enough.

This. We play Mafia games for the experience, though there is nothing to be ashamed of gameplay wise either.

Never played a mafia game so I'm cautiously optimistic as a newcomer to the franchise this week.

Does it launch Wednesday local midnight time on consoles? May snag it that night if it reviews well.

This is nothing like the previous Mafia games. That is neither good nor bad. Is just a different type of game compared the others in the franchise. Just an FYI in case you go in expecting the other games to be same/similar to this one.

Pro support means I pulled the trigger on the digital deluxe version. Time to start M1-3 plays and see if I can beat it before release of the new one lol. No shot, right?

This is what the game says and I live East Coast US so the game will be playable for me the minute the clock ticks 12am on Friday (Thursday night).

Mafia was the most fun I've had with an open world third person shooter gangster game.
