Just got back from seeing it.

Overall positive. I did feel like it was paced too fast. Maybe that's just what today's audience can tolerate, but ANH and ESB both felt better. A lot of the events didn't carry much weight. The whole planet battle didn't really grab me much. I didn't appreciate why all of that was important. Solo's death was ok, but by the hands of Ren it didn't feel earned. I didn't understand why he hated his father so much and what about the dark side was so alluring to him.

The score was good, although it didn't have that duel of the fates level of memorability.

Of course these are just my initial impressions.

Btw did they fucking nuke Coruscant in this? Was that city Coruscanf?

I can't believe I'm going to say this but Avatar was probably a better movie

Can JJ let a movie breathe? Fuck.

I think the movie made it very clear Kylo is still extremely green.

Nobody would talk to Vader like Hux always did to Kylo.

Snoke was probably waiting for Kylo to cut all ties with the light side in order to begin his real training in the dark side.

Vader = Kylo
Tarkin = Hux
Sidious = Snooke

And Tarkin did talk down to Vader... way too many call backs to the OT.

They need to work on Snoke's model some more. It was just too 'blah' for me considering how awesome his theme music is and how great Andy Serkis is with the character.

I have a feeling Luke never shared what really happened with Vader / Anakin to anyone else due to Han & Leia showing disdain for that name with "There was too much Vader in him".

He's taking all the credit for the defeat of the Empire.

Anybody else think Luke is less of a hero now that he's gone in hiding leaving everybody to fight a war? I know what happened was personal to him, with Ben being family, but the guy just vanishes when he should be helping.

For any Star Wars mega nerds, when Finn first used the lightsaber on that Stormtrooper with the weird shock baton on his arms, how did they clash? Can't lightsabers cut through anything.
I'm assuming it was some sort of vibration / energy weapon that would clash with the blade. There's some sort of "cortosis weave" in some stories that could be added to vibroweapons and clash against energy blades, maybe they pulled that sort of idea.

I haven't seen people line up for a film in about ten years.

Every main cinema chain here in the UK has online booking where you can choose your tickets, seating arrangement, placing in the theatre itself, screen and even what food and drink you want. I ordered my tickets two months ago. I've never had to worry about what seat I will get, its always sorted beforehand and its the same for everyone else I know too.

I can't believe cinemas where you can't book exist in this day and age. It's insane.

The line isn't to get tickets, its to get good seats.

So is Snooke a giant or was that just his hologram? At first I thought it was kinda weird that he was a giant but then it grew on me.

She was trying to create a spirit bomb, lol!

Swear I thought the energy from the forest was about to flow into her and shit.

The lightsabers reflecting in her eyes is dope tho. All the lighting with the sabers is really cool at the end, really. Made them seem more tangible.

Republic established itself on Hosnian Prime. So they wiped out the Hosnian System. Has been no information as to what's happened to Coruscant since ROTJ

So when Rey had her flashbacks. Was that supposed to be force ghost Obi Wan calling her name? Sounded a lot like him.

Even though I do love the film, I will say that I was pretty disappointed in the Williams score, though Rey's theme is good, especially in that scene with Luke at the end. But I'd be all for seeing what Giacchino would bring to the table in Ep 8.

Thinking about it, it seems Rei was remembering how to use the force instead of learning it. It appeared that when she found the Lightsaber it woke up something inside her that had remained dormant or suppressed for years. Quiet possibly it was Luke who trained her as a "youngling" and used the Force to suppress her young mind of the force.

Could make the arugment that the scene she saw of Luke touching R2D2 was actually a memory of her training. Gives more credence to the fact that R2D2 woke up a soon as she arrived, he was waiting for her.

Yeah I think its pretty obvious she was a padawan at Luke's academy so has probably had some training

Quite likely. Remember when Ren is interrogating her, he says he knows how she thinks of the ocean and an island (or something like that) and lo and behold she finds Luke in precisely that circumstance at the end. She may have been guided by Luke subconsciously the same way Luke was guided by Obi Wan. I too would prefer that she be a gifted force user completely outside the skywalker line.
That's another good point! I didn't even think about the ocean reference. Almost nothing else tied into that, and then Luke's on an ENTIRE PLANET OF OCEAN.

Just got out. Holy fuck.

Snoke has to be Palpatine right? It looks like a deformed Palpatine. And he always claimed he could cheat death, maybe he did figure it out, but it just classically didn't work quite right (basically Voldemort style).

The only thing I'm not sold on yet is Snoke, he needs a compelling backstory that ties to the series, not be a random villain. Hope he's Palpatine.

Yeah, on second view, and after listening to the soundtrack - Abrams should have called Giacchino. I know that he would have gotten ripped to hell and back for not getting Williams when Williams was available, and people would have shit on him for "snubbing" the Maestro - but Giacchino probably would have been a better fit.

Are you talking about when she wandered off to find Luke's lightsaber? I'm assuming that it was a force ghost guiding her.

Is it about that time again
Can I
Can I bring up Speed Rac-*is run over*

Overall I liked the movie. I would give it a solid 7/10. Characters were decent and Finn and Poe were my favorites.

Some things I had issues with:

Rey's acting fluctuated a lot. She spent so much time panting or just out of breath. I guess if you can't convey emotion acting tired is the second best option.

How is the Force a myth? I don't buy this crap. 70 years ago there were jedi all around helping and being basically a peace keeping force. Did Palpatine edit the Star Wars in-universe wiki? If Barbara Streisand can't remove her house's photo from the Internet I doubt the Empire, after a short bit, can make an entire galaxy forget jedi. It's like us forgetting Christianity.

Where'd Kylo Ren get a British accent?

Starkiller base's designer is the greatest con artist of all time. He sold a planet sized super weapon that could realistically only fire twice and they bought it and actually built the thing. Why not just build Death Star 2.0 with better defenses? Probably cheaper.

All the above is just nitpicking but the thing I truly disliked is how the light saber battles went down. These jedi don't look or feel powerful. Ren using the force to push and pull people is awesome. I wish that was incorporated more into the duels similar to how KOTOR's first trailer did it. That has good choreography, easy to follow, and is quite the visual piece. Jedi and Sith in this appear to be jobbers when they fight saber to saber.

So I'll ramble on with some of my thoughts. Beware the wall of text.

I saw a few people knocking the movie for starting on a desert planet. I didn't care about that at all, I just wanted it to start strong and it certainly did that. They did a great job of introducing the new characters and setting up the story in a hurry.

Like many others have said, Rey is really great. Glad she's apparently the new main character. They nailed it with casting her. Finn was pretty good. I wasn't blown away by him. He had a few funny moments but I felt like a couple of his funny lines were really cringe worthy. Like they were just trying to force the comedy in situations where it didn't need it. So I guess I can blame that on the writing rather than the character. But I do like how he's a "different" character in the sense that he came from the other side of things and we don't know if he has any innate force ability. Presumably he does but I guess we'll see.

Kylo Ren was good, too. I'm just glad they didn't kill him off in this movie because I was going to be very annoyed if we had another Darth Maul situation. But I really like his unique force powers. Freezing the blaster shot and the whole mind reading thing. Seems like stuff that was beyond even Vader. But he's really unstable so if he controls himself and goes totally to the dark side, you have a really powerful, badass villain.

I was in a nearly full theater and you could tell people were really into it... but I think everyone just felt deflated when he killed Han. Everyone just seemed to lose their energy and that carried out to the end of the film. I get why they did it, but I can't help but feel like everyone was disappointed once he died. I even heard people saying "oh my god" and "oh jesus" lol. The whole vibe from everyone just dropped completely at that point and it never came back. When the movie ended, I thought people might be kind of excited and hyped up again but... nope. It was gone after that.

But Harrison Ford did nail it in this movie. I wasn't sure how he would be but he pulled it off really well. Carrie Fisher seemed like... I don't know. Like she wasn't ready for the role or like it has just been too long for her or something. It felt like it wasn't even Leia every time she was on the screen.

I was disappointed that we didn't even get a line out of Luke. It was cool to at least see him but I was expecting him to say something. Oh well. Their training in the next movie should be great. I don't know if Rey is Luke's daughter or what but it sucks that they went that route with her with the "I don't know who my parents were" thing. I mean, she's obviously going to related to a major character. My first thought was that she was a younger daughter to Han/Leia especially with the way Han was looking at her when he was thinking about offering a job. But I guess that wouldn't make sense. I guess she can only really be Luke's in that case. She can't be a random person with that much natural force ability. That would be pretty silly.

But overall, I really liked it. They nailed it as far as re-establishing a new trilogy goes. It truly felt like a good Star Wars movie. I thought the pacing was really good and I was always engaged, which is a problem I had with most of the Star Wars movie at some point during each one. There was plenty of action between the lightsaber fights, the X-Wings and all that which I was hoping for. The comedy was well done except for a few head scratching moments. The music was good and wasn't overpowering like it was in the prequels. BB-8 was great. Poe was awesome and he's such a good actor. I hope he has an even bigger role in the next movie.

Some of the gripes were the way they destroyed the starkiller base at the end. Of course they had to blow it up with mere seconds left while flying towards it like they did with the death star. It almost made me roll my eyes. The whole stormtrooper hitler-esque part was weird and kind of lame. I don't like how they hardly explained anything about the Knights of Ren. Han and Chewie with a "surprise, we found the ship immediately" moment was kind of silly, I thought. But I can roll with that.

But overall, a great Star Wars movie. I can see why some people will think it's just average or not enjoy it that much but for me, it's right up there with ANH and ESB as a Star Wars experience. I'll stop rambling now. I think I got most of it out of my system, haha.

I liked it. Kylo Ren, Finn, and captain Phasma were a bit of a dissapointment. Also Lol at Rey suddenly mastering the force. Poe is cool as hell though.

I greatly enjoyed it though there are some def issues already highlighted. One I wanted to harp on was the makeup of the ships presented in the movie.

Only Tie Wing's and X-Wings? what happened with all the variants? I was probably most disappointed when all I saw were X-Wings that were made up in the attack of starkiller base. (Did they have Gen 1 and Gen 2 X-Wings? i feel like they had two different versions persent) Still, where my Y-Wing/A-Wing/B-Wings or Tie Intercepters/Bombers.

id give it a solid 8/10

Great introduction to the new characters.

The reset to the universe (no more republic, only resistance aka rebels) was surprising, but I guess that works.

Need more Poe.

My only complaint would be the rushed pacing, unoriginality and killing of ello asty.

why jj? Why kill him.

Hopefully Rian will give everything room to breathe.

Alos Kylo was great.

amazing how he's gone from "the single most important person for why this movie is working at all" in the first six movies to "can this dude retire already"

No.

Snoke is far, far older than Palpatine. Like Yoda / Maz level of old.

I didn't get r2d2 map thing.

Also sending only han fin and chewie to take down the shield made no sense...

This has been better explained earlier in the thread but this gist of it is that Luke turned on R2D2 to provide the rest of the map to the Resistance once he felt a disturbance in the Force (eg. Han dying, Rey/Kylo etc.)

Also sending a bunch of random peeps with those guys would have just made things less interesting IMO

Is Finn implied to be Force sensitive? I didnt understand how he could pick up a lightsaber out of nowhere and be able to fight in two different scenes.

Liked the film but had some pretty glaring problems with it. I yelled NO!! at that cliffhanger-ass ending in the theater lol

I thought Finn was the GOAT.

Looking forward to seeing how many more Ls he can hold in the next film.
