Fantastic movie. So much great banter and humor. Moreover, I left theater with a huge grin after seeing a Star Wars movie. That is a first. Rey is totally Luke's daughter right? Has to be.

The movie certainly goes to great lengths to communicate this idea. Maybe it's all a red herring to set something else up, but more than likely she is Luke's. The look Luke gave her at the end was very loaded. That was recognition.

I was able to piece together some things from the trailers, but I mostly kept away from spoiler threads and the like.

I guessed that Kylo Ren was Han's son based on the actor cast when I saw his face.

I guessed that Rey would be the Jedi, not Finn.

I guessed that Han would die, but I did not think Ren would kill him. I was expecting Han to take the Falcon on a suicide run or something.

Biggest thing I thought would happen that didn't. I thought Luke would show up in the final battle. I was expecting him to show up at some point during the Rey/Ren fight.

you think Adam Driver looks like Harrison Ford? lol

Holy shit. They really played that? That's kind of fucked up.

Yup, fucked up indeed. I'd already seen the trailer when it started and I thought, okay they are going to clean this up.. nope.. not one bit.

Didn't have anything outside of TMNT, Civil War, that Harry Potter spin-off, and something about Egyptian warriors. That's the theater. They screwed up. I don't think they're supposed to show red band trailers in a PG-13 movie.

I probably should complain. Really wasn't something I needed my kids to be hearing at a Star Wars movie.

Am I crazy or during the flashback sequence did we hear Obi Wan's voice screaming Rey?

Also I don't think she's Luke's daughter - I think she is a Kenobi. Vader's grandson vs Obi's.

I'd prefer this over her being Luke's daughter

I think considering how much they want to tie everything together this would be more poetic

People were straight up applauding whenever characters would show up. When Han and Chewie run in, when R2D2 was there, when Like turns around, and more.

Amazing experience.

Like, I seriously got that fuzzy feeling in my gut. I wanted to jump out of my chair. The whole audience was cheering her on and shit.

There's nothing like a killer theater experience.
Yeah. I usually hate crowds of people, being loud and annoying. But this was by far my favorite experience. As cheesy as it sounds, it was like watching a movie with a huge group of friends and family. Great vibe and experience.

I thought it was a combination of being found, having his lightsaber brought back and sensing Rey's power. No familial connection crossed my mind.

That is literally the point. He's a reverse Vader in this movie. Badass to sniveling brat who doesn't measure up to his granddad. It works.

Exactly. Which is why the Han kill felt all the more shocking. You think he's being weak and trying to give up, and then BAM.

She was testing her powers. Kylo said it himself.

P.S. The movie is called The Force Awakens. The Force and its use by one particular character is kind of a major aspect of the film.

She came up with that shit out of nowhere. It would be like if she started using Force Lightning near the end.

Fortunately my theater was mostly quiet during the film (a few chuckles at some of the jokes, which is fine) I don't want applause when I'm trying to watch a movie.

It doesn't work in the timeline. Rey is already several years old at least when abandoned and presumably that's around when things went bad with the Knights of Ren. I don't believe that Luke is training Han and Leia's son for a time but he won't entrust his sister with the knowledge that "oh, yeah, several years ago I had a daughter." He isn't going to keep it a secret from them.

I suppose it's possible he didn't know he had a kid most of that time but still...

Luke is presumably away when Ben turns or else Luke could have stopped him, where is he? Can he have someone who lives on another planet or elsewhere who could be someone he met and ended up training. He comes back to find why Ben has done, later finds out his SO is pregnant, has visions of the future and the dangers that come with it or well just because his nephew just fell to the dark side, the child is born and like a Skywalker, very strong in the Force but Luke wants to keep her hidden so her mother takes her somewhere and ends up being the one who trains her for a time, shit happens and they're found as Luke feared they would be and saves Rey but not before her mother is killed. Luke knows as long as she can be sensed through the Force that she won't be safe, does a Jedi mind wipe and severs her connection with the Force and entrusts her to people to place her somewhere he won't know where she is to keep her safe. Luke doesn't tell anyone because of his visions of the future but maybe knows that when she's ready she'll return or something. I think Luke would have plenty of motivation not to even tell his sister about his "secret love child".

Okay that does read too fan fictiony and yeah I see the holes but I've already typed it out so, meh. I really don't like the idea of Luke being alone all this time. *shrug* I actually kind of hate it.

:( Very few people cheered during any of my three showings last night. Second showing no one clapped or cheered ever. I was really disappointed, lol.

BTW, saw this in non-3D today.. and they played the R-rated Deadpool trailer before... pretty shocking for my 8yr old and 10yr old to have to listen to that.

Anyone else have that?

The red band trailer for Deadpool was shown? Your theater will probably get in trouble or something. Those redband trailers can only be shown when its attached to an R rated film. Anything less than R, the trailer would need to be the green band trailer. Or are you saying you were shocked they showed a trailer for movie that is rated R, but it was the green band trailer for the movie?

For some reason, I liked when he took off his mask when Rey challenged him on it. At least he didn't hide behind his cool armor like he could have.

That was a total narrative misstep. They should have saved that for the Han scene. It would have had a lot more impact when Han calls him out.

Just got back from it. What a great fucking movie. JJ is the fucking man. I can't stop using the word "fucking", because this is just a great fucking movie and a great fucking Star Wars to boot. The only thing lacking on it was a scene where fucking I kill Jar Jar with a fucking chainsaw slowly and gruesomely. Maybe it will be in the fucking sequel.

JJ is the fucking man.

Kylo Ren is easily the most disgusting villain. I hate him at the level of Joffrey.

Personally, I don't think it does. Maybe he'll do a lot more in future films, but I thought he was terrible in this one.

I posted this earlier, but I found it crazy no one applauded for Leia in my crowd. They clapped for Ackbar for gods sake! Not sure what to make of it.

I thought it was a combination of being found, having his lightsaber brought back and sensing Rey's power. No familial connection crossed my mind.

sorry to keep repeating myself :) but the movie is loaded with subcommunication on this, with stuff like pulling the lightsaber out of the snow. Maz also describes a lineage to Rey that seems to suggest something.

Fantastic film. Feels good to be back.

Went in mostly blind apart from the trailers but they were misleading in the way they were edited.

Was expecting maybe a few tangential connectors to the prequel trilogy but the best I've got is the podracer-looking thing on Tatooine that got popped by a tiefighter but I'm not even sure it was a podracer.

I thought that was Coruscant that got wiped by Starkiller base but have since learned that the Hosnian system. Apart from that, I can't pick any threads to the prequels whatsoever.

She came up with that shit out of nowhere. It would be like if she started using Force Lightning near the end.
Earlier, another poster pointed out that Rey was aware of the "legend" (or was it the myth?) of the Jedi. She was basically like "This feels lame, but what the hell, let me try that mind trick I heard about." It reinforces her background as someone who was vaguely aware of the Jedi, like Han in ANH, and it also conveys how she's a force sensitive who works on instinct. Ripe for training like young Luke was.

For some reason, I liked when he took off his mask when Rey challenged him on it. At least he didn't hide behind his cool armor like he could have.

I think they should have shortened that scene and had him keep the mask on until the Han part. Would have made that more impactful.

I didnt like rey using the force all at, especially the jedi mind trick.

I didn't mind her using it to grab the lightsaber, but yeah, the mind trick felt a bit forced. Like, it's the only time a mind trick is used the whole movie. Why would she know the force can do that?

vader is a bad guy who hunted down the jedi knights, one of which was luke's dad. why would you be thrown off by that?

there is nothing about there that requires some strained fan-fiction that pencils in a whole paragraph of plot.

"Vader killed your Father" is a misdirect done specifically to set up the reveal in ESB.

Rey having been trained to some extent at a very young age and forgetting about it isn't even that far fetched considering the implications of her vision when she touches the lightsaber the first time. Not only does she have visions of Ben's betrayal of Luke but she also has a premonition vision of the forest fight.

It's also well established that Force powers manifest themselves uniquely in different individuals even before training. It's why Young Anakin was so good with building/repairing electronics and piloting in TPM, why Luke and Leia can feel each other even being separated by light years despite having zero training in Force sensing and why Young Adult Anakin and now Rey have Force Visions, again with zero training in trying to achieve them and why Luke was always a been a great shot.

The Force manifests itself naturally in many ways but requires training to reach it's full potential. Some Force users are naturally strong in specific uses and weaker in others even without training.

Well makes sense for the Sith (rule of 2), because it would be fucking annoying if you had to listen to the force ghost of your former master. You know the one you killed.

"Dude, like wtf. YOU KILLED ME WHILE I WAS SLEEPING, I'm gonna haunt you forever"

I legitimately chuckled.

I really like how vague they were with Rey's past. It sets it up so with Episode VIII they can explore it a bit and hopefully have some sort of payoff. Finn as a character was very much welcomed and really enjoyed each scene with him. Really, really liked the movie overall. Might need to see it again soon.

Exactly. Which is why the Han kill felt all the more shocking. You think he's being weak and trying to give up, and then BAM.

The Han kill was anything but shocking. The framing, all of the characters inexplicably putting down their guns to watch the confrontation,...c'mon, you've seen movies before, right?

My theory is actually that Rey is Han's daughter and that Kylo and Rey are brother and sister.
