Because it was? It's not even portrayed as being remotely similar. One is very invasive as if the person was pushing and I'm not even sure is used to give actual commands but rather torture a person. Compare that to the mind trick stuff that is used for basic commands. It's very different. Maybe it was an issue with direction though rather than writing.
I think that would have worked well actually if they couldnt actually stop the weapon from firing, but probably too depressing an ending for the first in a trilogy.
And one of my biggest pet peeves is the whole countdown, then cut to a scene that is longer than the remaining time on the countdown

Also really liked the X-Wing battles in this. Especially when Black Leader goes HAM, and has Finn questioning who the awesome pilot is.
This was not in the film. Disappointed.

Rey got to experience the power of the force first hand when she was interrogated by Kylo. The extent of the manipulation possible, etc, she felt all of that. Her first push back with the force was almost accidental. Once she realized she had the force, she put two and two together and attempted to use the same level of mind manipulation Kylo just attempted on her. She also clearly was up to snuff on the mythology of the force. Luke seemed utterly clueless about any of these aspects when he first began to experience and utilize the force.

Oh yeah, I absolutely got a Chigurh vibe from Ren's first appearance.
Obviously, they went a different way, but I love the idea of an unstable youth throwing psychotic tantrums as the main villain. I'm really, really excited for where they take Ren.

Nah, the environments got swapped, but the character actions are basically the same. They meet a tiny wise sage strong in the force, where our hero descends into a hole and has a vision, before getting wrecked by the person she just had a vision about. (Empire), and then the run on the giant superweapon that makes the first Death Star look like shit, featuring Han Solo leading a small strike team to take out the shields so the attack run can begin, an attack run that ends with the ship flying INTO a superstructure, blowing it to hell, and flying back out again, while a climactic lightsaber battle takes place among three people (JEDI).
elements from all three movies are consistently sprinkled across every act of the film, but the key moments seem to follow that mixtape structure: Beginning = Star Wars, Middle = Empire, End = Jedi.

Luke doubted the existence of The Force in ANH. He thought it was all fairy tales. The next part of my comment also addresses this comment...
...Conversely, Rey very clearly is enamored of the old stories of The Force and The Rebellion. Han telling her earlier in the movie that all those stories were true sets her up to trust in The Force much more freely and openly than Luke did. So Rey is feeling her way through The Force. She fends off Kylo only after he successfully starts pulling things from her mind, so it would seem she emulates what she's feeling back on him and it blocks his progress and allows her to read his thoughts instead. Pulling the JMT on the guard takes a few tries for her to tune in as well and the tide-changing scene in The Forest is one of her giving over completely to being guided by The Force.

I believe Kennedy said that it was because of both Safety Not Guaranteed and Jurassic World. Ability to tell a small, compelling, and personal story and also to craft a massively appealing blockbuster.
This bothered me, Ezra was shown struggling to get it right and he has a master, but Rey just gets it right at her third try without any instruction.
I REALLY Hope she's actually had some training, but the trauma of the Knights of Ren's massacre made her block everything regarding the Force. That would work for me

Colin is also a huge favorite of Spielberg just like JJ I. People can hate on the story directions etc. but Jurassic World was competently directed and well Spielberg has anointed him as one of the chosen ones so really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks

Him having a moment of weakness with a woman in the middle of some adventure he probably shouldn't be having (because he's a fuckup) before she goes off-planet and lives her life and has his kid?
Doesn't seem out of bounds to me.
It's definitely something that was, at one point, being considered by the writers. It was at least on the table that Ben got up to SOMETHING at SOME point before Star Wars.
It makes Luke's own achievements a lot less impressive.

They like picking up and coming actors so maybe they extended that to directors. Except from JJ and including Gareth Edwards, not one of them have a big track record. Even Josh Trank wasn't that big before he assholed out.

I think it's neat how they started out acting like Fin was the new Jedi but he slowly became more of a Han character, and Rey seemed like her own thing, maybe some Han - but then of course Jedi. However, piloting the Falcon like Han.

It makes Luke look like a pretty shitty Jedi in comparison but yeah if Rey is way better at this force thing than Luke Skywalker it makes sense.
I just think it's surprising that Luke is being shown up to be pretty dang mediocre.

The biggest question I have after the movie is with BB-8. I thought he was part of the evolution of the astromech droid in the time since the end of the OT, but all the resistance fighters except Poe use R2 units in their X Wings. So what is BB-8? They say he's a BB unit casually, so he is part of a lineup of droid and not a modified droid. So why were there no other BB units?
They just need to introduce a two-seat X-Wing so we can have Top Gun in space for EP VIII.

My guess is that a BB-unit is probably less used for industry jobs, and is more prominent in the civil sector. He was probably just Poe's personal droid from before joining the resistance. Poe certainly seems like the bourgeoisie gone freedom fighter type.
She was definitely the weakest of the new characters.

I'm fine with how they used Phasma (I think it's perfectly fine to just have a small side character that looks cool) but I do think they could have pulled her into the ground attack on Jakku, particularly putting her in a tie on the tail of the Falcon.
Gunn is busy on Guardians 2 well into 2017 so he wouldn't really have to time to do Episode 9 (assuming he wanted to). And Disney probably wants him primed and ready to go on Guardians 3 or maybe another Marvel movie. I don't think they want to cross the streams on the Marvel/Star Wars talent pool if they can help it.
