Except I'm missing something, but how exactly did Rey defeat Kylo Ren in that fight. This was supposed to be her first time using a lightsaber. Did she tap into the force or something?

My thoughts were: he was obviously hurt from that shot that caught him. Also at the end Snoke said bring Kylo to finish his training, so maybe he was implying he hasn't even reached his full potential yet. I expect to see a much more powerful Kylo in the Episode 8.

I thought they made Finn to look like a bit of chump overall. The black comedy stylings of black dude in film. I have a crush on Rey though I'm sure every male on the planet does.

Those are my thoughts. Good movie though I'm hoping they're playing the long game on Finn though and they have a lot more for him than second fiddle chumpboy who keeps getting his ass handed. But boy does he have heart!!?!?!11!!11

I thought Mad Max did a better job of showcasing the strong female lead while still keeping Max being a superbadass. I like it like that. Not one person getting all the cool shit/glory. I really like Rey though so I'm not too passionate about it. I'm sure I'm not wording my thoughts properly.

I really loved that Kylo was not the perfect unbeatable villain with no feelings. And actually you can see how almost nobody actually respects him like he is the evilest of the evil. Some stormtroopers treat him as a lunatic and turn their back and run away. He's not a big leader and he's practically competing with General Hux for the power. Yes, he's a great user of the dark side of the Force, but it seems rather more a brute force user than a very well trained one. Actually even Snoke said in the end that he needs to complete his training. So the fact that he was defeated by Rey is not that strange, him being obviously wounded and having a moment of doubt when he ask her to join the Dark side.

You really nailed it when it comes to Kylo being about brute force instead of very well trained. I think that's what gets him into trouble in that final fight. Even an untrained/non force user like Finn managed to clip him. Then an unseasoned Rey managed to best him with the force backing her.

That's why Snoke wants him back to complete his training. Dude needs to learn some discipline.

I loved that Kylo Ren was completely unhinged.

I mean, thats literally a part of the fight, her tapping into the force. We actually see that happen.

He's a wonderful custodian. Kind of a big deal, really.

I hate this background point SO much.

Basically makes him a joke from here on out...just for a quick laugh in the first movie.

And while it makes sense that soldiers have to do that kind of work, it's not made clear in the movie, and I feel like most of the audience just felt "haha black janitor".

I would like to be first to say that I think either Poe or Finn, or both... are gay.

I'm sure this will not be a popular opinion, but I honestly think Disney/Kennedy et al are going there.

Anyone with me?

There is nothing about them that hints on that way, especially Finn, since he appears to have special feelings for Rey.

In other hand, there is also nothing that confirms them as straight guys so that could happen.

I didn't notice his avatar.

Stop trolling Timeaisis lol.

I really liked it. Scanning through the thread I'm not getting many of the complaints leveled at the movie. I really liked all of the characters, new and old. They were likable, funny, serious, and their motivations were clear. I understand the complaints that the story was a bit similar to a new hope but these stories have almost always been vehicles for interesting characters and I think they nailed that in this movie.

Lol.

Dude got stabbed through the stomach (or chest) with a light saber. You don't recover from that. On top of that he fell off of a sky bridge.

He's dead.

Even if he landed in one of those tunnels like Luke in ESB, HE GOT STABBED THOUGH THE STOMACH WITH A LIGHT SABER.

And the planet fucking exploded.

I hated that because he was killing it in the mission briefing and then they land on starkiller and he goes "nah, I worked sanitation. I just talked confidently so you guys would let me come save Rey"

I don't really care for double-blades, or having two sabers, or pike-sabers, or any of that....

But I do like this battle outfit. Really hope Rey isn't about to put on some robes. I was kinda disappointed to see Luke fitted up in that gear.

The arm-bands are really striking, in the future will be iconic. They should stick with that style for her.

With John Williams it rarely is. However it could be simply be a dark side motif, and not strictly a Plageuis thing. Remember that the Emperor had a men's choir in his theme as well.

yes but that song is called Palpatine's Teachings
The first part of this track plays while Palpatine is telling Anakin the story of his old master, Darth Plagueis. The second part plays when Anakin learns that Palpatine is a Sith Lord.
and the topic is Darth Plagueis..but of course you could be right that is only a dark side theme by now.

So, I have issues with Rey kicking ass at the end. It's either I accept it, like I accepted Chris Pratt can train raptors or I don't. How this movie was written its harder for me to accept Rey. It just feels like a marketing stunt to get more female viewers since Disney has been on record at trying to get. But whatever.

What really bugs me is fucking R2 waking the fuck up at the end of the movie to show the piece of the map. Why he didn't do that right when BB8 sees him is beyond me. Especially when they say he won't wake up till Luke comes. Like wtf.... I'm sure red letter media will have a field day with this one part.

You know she'll have the blue saber first, and then Luke's when he dies. Too easy not to do it, but only in IX. It will be like the transformation of Luke in VI when we see him for the first time.

Does Luke even have his saber anymore? The threw it at the end of Jedi, and it's not visible on him after that scene when he unmasks Vader.

Could we see it in his scene in TFA?

Just because there is a lot of children watching these movies I don't think it will happen, way too big of a movie and audience for that imo. Too taboo for certain people as well, and it's Disney, but who knows..

R2 woke up when Rey entered the base.

Script was written before he was cast. Has nothing to do with being black. Has everything to do with being a storm trooper in training.

One has to wonder if Luke still uses a saber or if he's beyond that now.

Yeah actually I wonder if he even took it with him out of the Death Star. My guess is no, at least there is no indication I can recall that he did. So I'm thinking the green saber is gone and he never made a new one, neither did any of his trainees. Hence the one Rey gives him is the one he'll use, unless he outright doesn't even want it.

I think people forget that Rey knows how to handle herself. She's experienced with a staff.

Remember when Finn was going to "save" her from those thugs? She kicked their asses.

The comment about Ren as being a brute force fighter verses fully trained is 100% on point.

It was just there to show he's a nobody really. He doesn't have a background as an important leader or big time hero, he's not force sensitive or particularly skilled in anything. He's just a guy with a big heart and you gotta love that.

One of the best things in the movie was the reveal that Finn didn't just happen to have the inside scoop on Starkiller base. I thought that was too convenient so I was happy when he said he didn't know and just lied to save Rey. Finn ftw!!

Have we addressed why the bowcaster projectile wasn't green?

I've been reading back a few pages and searching, but couldn't find anything.

Saw it earlier tonight and wasn't all that impressed. It was good, as in it wasn't bad, but it wasnot amazing.

If the sun went out they would have all froze In minutes.
Carie Fisher is a shity actor, wow. Terrible performance.
Everything moved too quickly, the republic blowing up meant nothing because we spent no time there
Kylo Ren looks 100% full retard without his hood. Overall lame.
The new girl Ray was the highlight of the movie.

Most purple I know are losing their shit over this. I don't get it.

That all depends on atmosphere keeping heat in and the battle station and how it generated heat... so they would probably have more than a few minutes.

You could tell Fisher hasn't acted in a while...

1. Kylo was badly wounded
2. Rey was established as very good at melee combat
3. Rey was getting her ass handed to her until she got power from the force

First time Luke uses a lightsaber he stops several laser shots without using his eyes.
The force is a powerful ally.

Ok. I remember the beginning of the movie her stick weapon thingy.

I mean, thats literally a part of the fight, her tapping into the force. We actually see that happen.

I'm not big on Star Wars. I didn't know that's what she was doing.

Edit: Here is the book I was referring to people awhile early that is now canon, and explains much more on how Rey is a good pilot, and Finn is more than just some janitor they portray him in the movie. Pretty good read. They have a new canon of comics and books now

Being gay = offensive to children?

I hear what you're saying, but someone needs to take steps in movies to counter that. Why not Star Wars?

That said, if Finn and Rey become a thing, I think that will be a big first for action heroes as well. I think that one is very likely.

If there is going to be any romance in the trilogy, chances are high it's between Rey and Finn. It's perfectly possible there isn't any though.

When they were in the Falcon and she was flying and he was shooting, and they immediately ran toward each other afterwards and were excitedly talking together in rapid succession while staring in each other's eyes.... One of the most real moments of chemistry in the franchise for me. It's real.

I'm lost on the Artoo part. On one hand, there's a theory that Luke sensed Rey's awakening and Han's death and used the force to give Artoo the information that they needed. This is all well and fine but it just feels contradictory to the ending we see. Luke seems taken aback that Rey has found him and looks confused. Theorists, halp.

I get where you're coming from, but I think the point was twofold - it makes him another nothing who will grow into something great, and it's yet another callback to ANH in the form of garbage compacting.

The first bit that sounds like Gregorian monks is actually in-universe music from a Mon Calamari opera. I won't deny the similarities, I just think it's more likely than not a dark side thing. We get a lot of it with Anakin in Revenge of the Sith as well, as in Battle of the Heroes.

We already see Rey kicking ass at the beginning. That, coupled with bigtime Force awakening and Ren's injuries, give her an edge in lightsaber dueling.

Speaking of which, how did that fight end? It was tough to make out on the screen for some reason -- I thought she may have cut his hand off at first, but that didn't seem to be the case. And then others have said that she destroyed his lightsaber?

I don't care how trained and street wise Rey is... you're going up against someone who's likely been trained all their life (child of two of rebellion's biggest war heroes, direct descendant of most powerful force user, trained by poor man's emperor/thanos), it just felt so contrived because 1. the film needed a lightsaber battle (star wars films gotta have a lightsaber battle) and 2. the good guys have to, kinda, win at the end of the first movie because... dramatic structures or a new hope or something idk.

it didn't have to play out that way but you could feel the plot being forced to

Yea so just got done seeing it and dear god that was a huge piece of shit. I went in excited and hoping it would blow me away and dear god I was let down every way imaginable. For me Star Wars ended at 6 movies.

confused? I thought he looked overwhelmed with emotion..

Why did Han not slump down after he got pierced? It would've been a natural position after being stabbed... and with the lightsaber being what it is, it would sliced him from chest through clavicle and out.

Do you have children? 7 years old watching 2 guys in love is really strange for them, lol.

But yeah, I could see Finn and Rey ending up together.
