I wasn't impressed with Phasma's role but I believe Kathleen Kennedy (someone may want to correct me) said she'll be around throughout. I want to see her become Finn's nemesis like Rey with Kylo. Though they'd need to give her much more to do. FIngers crossed on that front.

Agree with jtb about neutering the catharsis of rotj ending and ensuing peacetime. Would have appreciated a lot more exposition on the state of things in the world a la ANH. I get this is kind of a made by committee deal and gotta sell toys and what not, but I would've appreciated more time devoted to fleshing out mythos and what happened during intervening period than one chase and daring escape after another. Basically wished the thing gave more breathing room for quiet moments, which ANH managed to do.

We had entirely too little time with Maz, that character was the life of the movie for me outside of Rey and Han, though I get they were kinda splitting Obi Wan duties between her and Han. Really hope Maz gets more time to shine in the other two, would looove an origin movie featuring her, maybe an animated miniseries.

I wonder, if the "Snoke is Plagueis" theory is correct, how it's gonna play out by movie 9. Plagueis was only mentionned but seems like he could've had a pivotal role in the overall star wars plot since episode 1 and before even (like a long con that fucked up on the long run and he's stepping up to fix it himself). Would be kinda cool I guess

One of the things that made me scratch my head afterwards was... What would Kylo Ren do if he found Luke? He spent the whole movie chasing the map. Then when he finally finds a Jedi he's practically useless. Luke would have kicked his ass.

Yeah, it seems stupid that a sargeant or platoon leader would even have the security clearance to, you know, lower the defenses of the entire planet.

I loved it. I feel like they got the nostalgia out of the way with this one while moving everything forward. The next movie should be absolutely insane.

That said, I will forever hate JJ for han. Finn makes a great substitute. As rey does for leia. But c'mon. The first movie you do in han? Seriously? Scumbag.
Ford wanted the character dead and he's getting too old anyway. I'd rather see him killed on screen while he can still play the character than just stop appearing in the movies. Same goes for Luke and Leia.

Did you guys already talk about a theory that just came to me a while after my second viewing? Here goes:

Maybe Han isn't dead.

Maz was amazing, and I think we can assume a lot of her stuff was cut.

Several of her lines from the trailer weren't used, and the fact that she seems to be handing Luke's lightsaber to Leia in one of the trailers seems to indicate that she made the journey to the Rebel base with them - but we just never saw that in the final cut.

I think Phasma might join the good guys in the next movie.

She will probably be exiled from the New Order when they find out what she did... I'm really confused how she could've survived, though.

I think she might be expelled from the Order and obsessed with finding and killing Finn as a way to prove herself. She might just end up being Finn's antagonist for the rest of the films.

Ben Solo found Vader's burned mask and when he touched it, it showed him visions similiar to those Rey had when she touched Luke's lightsaber. His initial interpretation of the visions showed him Vader's way to the dark side. Snoke then used Ben to prevent Luke from training the new Jedi Order.

Sounds good.

People are gonna power level debate the Kylo, Finn, Rey light saber fight from now until the end of time so I'm not touching that. But I did really like how they fought reflecting where they are coming from.

Kylo psyching himself up to fight through the pain.
Finn reflecting that he has combat training but isn't necessarily a force user
Rey reflecting that she is a force user but isn't combat trained.

Personally back on the ship though, I would have had Han make a joke or two about Luke using Jedi mind trick as a Checkov's gun for Rey doing it later. They already have several literal Checkov's gun hints for the potency of Chewy's bow caster so one more wouldn't have hurt.
Director's cut of the movie incoming when?

The ending looked like a cheesy syfy flick though.

Ford wanted Han to die in ESB and ROTJ (if memory serves). I feel pretty confident in saying that Ford wanted Han to die in Ep 7, and it even seems very plausible that this was a condition of his to agree to reprise the role.

One of the things that made me scratch my head afterwards was... What would Kylo Ren do if he found Luke? He spent the whole movie chasing the map. Then when he finally finds a Jedi he's practically useless. Luke would have kicked his ass.

He would have tried to kill him and die. It said in the opening crawl that the First Order wanted to locate and destroy Luke.

Well, he obviously wanted to kill the last remaining Jedi. Whether or not he was up to it probably never entered into his thinking.

Guys, I promise that I'm not hung up on Han's death! I'm just saying that it was a possibility that everything was foreseen and planned for!

Oh, about the "rushed friendship" between Finn and Rey.

Up until Maz Kanada's tavern, i think Rey's main motivation to keep Finn alive and around is the fact that she thinks he's resistance and will help her take BB8 to his destination.

Even at Maz' tavern she's not saying "don't leave" with the subtext of "I need you" or "i like you, stick around". She's tries to talk him out of letting down the good guys by running away from the first order.

Then Finn tells her he's not resistance - and that's the last time she's gonna see him until she meets him in the Starkiller base corridors.
It's similar to Luke being bummed that Han doesn't want to help with the attack, only to find Han heroically saving his ass during his trench run.

I like their friendship. I hope they're sticking with them being bestest friends, not lovers.

"A good question! For another time."
she'll be back!

I'm literally talking to my friends about this very thing. Would be dope.

I do want to know how Finn developed such humanity and a sense of humor. It implies such weakn oversight during their upbringing which can help explain how inept Stormtroopers are.

What's up with hitting light speed inside existing structures ? Another Abramsism.

Was that not possible before? Just seemed like they never did it

A. Because the Falcon always failed at the jump
2. Because they didn't want to die from hitting stuff.

Did anyone else think it was a bit dumb that all the dogfights only involved X-Wings and TIE Fighters?

No A-Wings, B-Wings, Y-Wings, no nuthin.

I mean, they're doing a bombing run on StarKiller base and they don't have a few Y-Wings with them?

Maybe they were all with the fleet at the republic and they just had a few spare X-Wings lying around.

Oh yeah, can't help but imagine Poe and Finn making out on screen. Bad parenting or not, we all know what the reactions would be.

I guess I'm wrong though.

I didn't mean that personally against you, it's a sad fact and yea I don't think we'd see that on screen either... They didn't even let Han and Leia kiss, cause old people. Or something.

I get strained relationship and all... It was just such a sad and subverted final parting

The Han Solo scene with Ren had me in tears. I didn't think they would have the balls to do it.

To kill of a character than an actor has wanted dead since the first movie? I expected Han to die since the first few trailers. And then I was certain once I saw they had slotted him into the role of Old Ben while watching the movie. Not saying his death was bad though, good stuff.

He will resurrect all of the past Sith Lords for an epic apocalyptic battle.

You can't blow your load in the first movie bro.

I remember someone saying that they did this because they figured the different ships would be too confusing for audiences. Lame if true, I missed the other ships too.

Poe does feel shoehorned in but that's due to how lacking the aerial battles were.

Poe seemed completely irrelevant other than getting Finn off the Star Destroyer. But they could have found another way to get him free.

The X-wing dogfights could have been done with a generic pilot. Or a "Wedge" type that doesn't need further development.

Hell, Rey was piloting the Millenium Falcon like a freaking Ace through the ruins. She's never flown it before then.

Too many liberties taken in that movie.

Did you guys already talk about a theory that just came to me a while after my second viewing? Here goes:

Maybe Han isn't dead. Maybe everything that has happened around this point (around when Luke disappeared) was already seen by Luke or Leia as a vision of the future? Leia didn't seem very shocked when she felt Han get stabbed or when everyone made it back to base.

Also, it was like Han knew what was going to happen when he walked up to Ren. The way the scene played out to me seemed like Han helped Ren impale him with the lightsaber, because it was something they both knew had to happen according to plan. That's why Ren said "thank you". Now, I really have no idea how Han could survive the fall.

Maybe these events were destined to happen, Luke, Leia, Han, Maz, and even Ren knew that they had to play their part in all of this exactly as planned, and that there's a greater evil at play (beyond Snoke, possibly) that must be dealt with in the future.

Leia doubled over when Han died. I do think it was odd that Chewie didn't say anything to Leia though.

Han's dead. Harrison Ford really doesn't want to continue playing him and was likely involved for that reason.

Oh man, I like this idea A LOT.

Something I found off putting was when 2 characters were talking on screen at the same time, when it switched from one characters voice to the other you could visibly see the camera sharpening/focusing on the person talking.
Is that normal?
I've never noticed it in another film before.

I am so glad they didn't kill Kylo. I was really worried when Rey slashed him across the face I was screaming in my head "PLEASE DON'T DIE! WE NEED GOOD VILLAINS"!

Is there a definitive list of the Star Wars canon now that EU's been chucked away? I want to look in to more of the stories available outside of the film. I plan on watching The Clone Wars as well at some point as I haven't seen that show yet and I hear good things about it. What about any content more linked to The Force Awakens? What's the novel like in terms of expanding on things?

Being executed on spot instead of getting exiled seems like a more possible outcome.

Yeah. Maybe she'll go into exile on her own, ashamed of what she did and knowing the New Order would have her head if she ever showed up. Instead of officially joining back up with the Order, she harbours a personal grudge against Finn and seeks vengeance.
