I've seen a lot of people mention the memory wipe [...] as a theory but has that ever been done before in the Star Wars universe?

In the EU (that has been made non-canon)? Sure. In K
OTOR you play as Darth Revan who has fallen to the dark side when facing a sith emperor , but was captured and had his memories wiped by the Jedi in hope that he won't fall again.

One thing I didnt like is ever character has a "Han Solo"-ness about them in some way...its a bit distracting. Its like they picked apart all the aspects of Han's character and handed out bits and pieces to all the new characters.

It just seemed that way because Ford was the only one willing to try and rise above Lucas' scripts and this was painfully obvious in the PT when he wasn't there. I think you're just confusing the combination of competent writing, directing and acting (leading to actual chemistry between the characters) for everyone being a little bit of Han.

I don't agree though. That was the point of my post: that it was explained, fairly straight forwardly, in the opening.

Not sure what else there is to know about it on a basic level. Also if people are interested in more of how things have been going in that regard between trilogies I'm fairly positive it'll be fleshed out more in New EU materials. But movie wise there's not much else to say about it.

One of those visual encyclopedia books explains that the New Republic signed some kind of peace agreement with the remnants of the Empire (the first order) basically agreeing to leave each other alone. The resistance is led by Leia who was branded a warmonger because she did not trust the first order. What we see in the film is basically their first major act of aggression, breaking that agreement, and pretty much destroying the New Republic.

Thought as much, but this and DS 3.0 were rushed as fuck.

I think that's spot on. The genuine chemistry between the Charachters is what made the movie such a success.

Also best moment of the whole movie as far as reveals go was when Rey diverts to the right and we get our first shot of the Millennium Falcon. My body demanded I cry out in happy surprise

Movie was really great. JJ resurrected the fire of passion I have for the universe which is quite a feat considering after the prequels I didn't think there were even embers left.

As it turns out, JJ was the perfect director to take the mantle as he is absolutely fantastic in taking old, established franchises and giving them new life. He gave us and this new generation a unique take on A New Hope that can go just about anywhere. I think The Force Awakens works as a reboot, remake, and sequel that allows Disney to take the baggage of the franchise and twist it all into something quite possibly even better than the OT.

So is the current thought that Rey is Han and Leias daughter?

I hope Rey's story is an important one (I hope her parents factor in) BUT I hope she isn't related to the main cast. There are other force users out there besides Skywalkers and Kenobis. I think linking Rey or her parents to the failed academy that Luke tried to start should be the only connection, if there has to be one tied to the original cast.

I can't stop thinking about the film.

I'm finally excited for anything Star Wars again.

I thought the prequels would've done too much damage, but here I am thinking about the universe again.

The planets destroyed by Starkiller were called the Hosnian system. So I'd guess the Coruscant-looking one was Hosnia.

that is the other thing that peeved me with this movie. JJ made news planets that look too closely to old familiar planets

I was one of many who was confused of seeing a City planet get destroyed, I seriously thought it was Coruscant

I thought that the planet that the Resistance was one, was Yavin, but it was not Yavin

A female character that isn't a damsel in distress.

Not really.
A Mary Sue or, in case of a male, Gary Stu or Marty Stu is an idealized fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through extraordinary abilities. Often but not necessarily this character is recognized as an author insert and/or wish-fulfillment.

Essentially a walking deus ex machina.

The current leading theories for Rey are:

Luke's Daughter

Han and Leia's Daughter (least likely)
Obi-Wan's Grand Daughter (or other general relation).

That was my first guess to who she was when she started being all badass.
The part with Finn going "We'll use the force!" and Han being like "That's not how it works!" made me laugh a lot.

Also, is it just me or was BB-8 like R2D2 2.0? I loved the little fella, his sad noises though especially when he thought his master died </3.

I didn't really like the actor for Kylo, didn't really feel it. I was pretty disappointed when he took of his helmet.

A female character that isn't a damsel in distress.

lol no

regardless of gender, a character suddenly doing awesome things and is never wrong can feel off

with that said Rey isn't veering to that, yet

So what's wrong here, haven't people been whining about this sort of thing where female characters are almost always in need of help or something?

nah the guy's joshing

Again, a poorly-written/wish fulfillment Batman is an example of a Mary Sue

Finn is Force sensitive... here's how we know:

After the dogfight on Jakku he remarks to Rey, "Yo set me up perfectly, I don't know how i made that shot" Rey also remarked that she doesn't know how she was able to fly the Millennium falcon so well

Finn was given and wielded a lightsaber decently for someone who has never used one.

And truthfully, no one to my knowledge in Star Wars canon has ever used a lightsaber that was not Force Sensitive.

Han used the very same Saber to cut open the Tauntaun on Hoth.

I like to think that was BB-8 giving him the finger. lol

Me three, but apparenty some people think BB8 was giving the thumbs up. That just seems so odd to me given how he doesn't trust Finn at all.

The vast majority of people I spoke to at work about it also thought BB8 was giving Finn the finger, which I think is what really makes it work because the lighter doubles up as a threat.

A Mary or Gary Stu is a character that is a Self-Insert Fantasy fulfillment of the Author. Typically someone who is good at everything they do, never loses, and is completely loved and adored by everyone. Basically a perfect character that never makes mistakes.

It's common for YA Books to have Mary/Gary Stu's as they allow the teen readers to imagine themselves as the leads.

They could just do this but for Alec Guinness;

AUDREY HEPBURN
BRUCE LEE

the Audrey Hepburn is way better.
This isn't quite perfect, but damn if it isn't really good. That'd be pretty neat for Guinness!
A female character that isn't a damsel in distress.
Wrong.

Nah, pringles is just making a disingenuous comment. You can create a female character that isn't a damsel in distress without making her a Mary Sue. You can also create a powerful male without making a Gary Stu.

I know it's pretty crazy.
It's awesome and torturous being this excited for a series of movies that are going to be such a long time coming but all are story arcs I've never known beforehand.

That's never happened to me before
