Thinking on it, I'd rather Luke never use a lightsaber anymore. Should he have to wreck house, go nuts with the force. Apologies for the tumblr gif; it's all I can find.

My theater clapped when it started.

Clapped when at the Falcon reveal.

Clapped when Han and Chewie showed up.

Clapped at the credits.

Lots of laughs, no groaning or whatever. It was a genuinely good time and I can't wait to go see the movie again.

That falcon reveal was amazing.

"Should we take that?!"

"No it's a pile of junk!"

*BOOM*

"Okay let's take the junk!"

Pans to the falcon. An excellent reference to the OT while also working as a comedic bit. One example of excellent writing in the movie.

It was actually a great double reference. The 'pile of junk' comment and the switching of transport modes following an event blocking them from taking the first. I really liked that scene as well

You could hear people audibly groan in the theater at the convenience of that whole situation

Actually, amusingly the loudest reaction the movie got was people laughing when Kylo Ren took his helmet off for the first time. Whoops.

Jesus what bizarro theatre were you in

To be honest theres no way a follow up to the OT would not involve kids of the original characters in some way. No doubt there will be things in these movies that were previously done in the old EU novels.
It's more than that. Jedi Academy, someone meditating on Vader suit, Leia being a general, another planet destroying weapon.

Anyone feel a lot of similarities to the Timothy Zahn books? In that story Han and Leia have force sensitive twins.

I definitely went "hey, they stuck with the idea of Han and Leia having a son that fell from grace." If Rey is Luke's daughter, I wonder if they'll keep the idea of Luke's wife having been killed by his nephew.

I was just thinking about how the New Republic isn't really focused on, and I think an anthology movie going over the creation of the New Republic and First Order may be needed. Keep the Star Wars politics to a minimum, but I want to know how the state of the government transitioned from the fall of the Galactic Empire and the rise of the Rebellion.

This is much needed, why is the FO so fucking powerful?, I always thought that with Palpatine dead, the new republic would erradicate everything from the old empire.

It doesn't work that way. Palpatine wasn't the Empire. It's also been decades, plenty of time for growth, change, restructuring.

How did they build the new death star? I'd have liked a little more exposition before the final assault began.

The hologram was actually making him look much smaller than he actually is. He is bigger than the Star Killer. He is the final boss of Episode 9.

But for reals I enjoyed the movie a lot. I don't have much to really talk about. The plot was about as good as I would have hoped for a Star Wars sequel.

Oh he is supposed to be a massive giant? Didn't know that. That'd be amazing!

I don't think so either, she's the protagonist and will probably be tested and go through your usual. In fact her getting away from stuff was through smarts and Force talents in this movie but I feel like her streak is going to wear out.

Like I said she isn't an MS yet but stuff like "being able to free herself without relying on her friends" felt a tad too competent for someone who just got into the Force, vs. say, Luke who had plenty of his ass in peril without his friends' help.

From TVtropes:

I think all of these questions apply to Rey. She's not the only character that does a lot of good things, Poe, Finn and Han also show themselves very capable. She's well-written and realistic, thus it doesn't seem impossible that she knows how to take care of herself and has certain talents. She seems well-liked and not obnoxiously perfect.

It seems like a reach to call her a Mart Sue just because she doesn't make any obvious mistakes or shows any deep character flaws. She's a bad-ass but I believed every second of it.

The marysue comes mostly on how for a character whose supposed to be new to the force is able to use it so well.

Also lol tvtropes, it's a basic definition but marysue can encompass anything. For instance Batman vs Superman, most of the time Batman becomes a marysue in those writing.

I don't think the politics are that confusing, but the term "resistance" makes no god damn sense within the context presented in the movie.

Yes she does. She gets captured, but free herself using power she didn't even know about prior, master a lightsaber she held for the first time and defeat and adversary after adjusting her composure.

She's a Mary Stu, and it's weird alot of ppl in here is hoping she is one by not giving any reason for her op-ness. Her being a Skywalker would've work better to reduce the Mary Stu element.

The bolded does not make her a Mary Sue. People are forgetting the vortex of attention-hogging and unwarranted perfection that is described by a Mary Sue. What your describing is just a capable protagonist. To use the term Mary Sue this loosely would apply broadly to the protagonists of so many stories that the term is rendered meaningless.

Ok.. people really need to give this "Master a Lightsaber" thing a rest. It doesn't matter how much people hate the Lightsaber fights in the Prequels... they are canon and THOSE fights are with Lightsaber Masters. The Clone Wars also illustrates Lightsaber Mastery. In comparison to that, everyone in this movie that wield a saber are basically just swinging wildly at each other.

I found it hard to believe Poe wasn't pulling the same light-speed-invasion trick as Solo. Did he not know it was an option? Was he needed to lead the rest of the fleet? Did it feel too unsafe to do without the backup of the fleet? I don't know, it bothered me a little.

I'm floored at the amount of negative comments I'm seeing in this thread. It's a critically reviewed movie that brought a beloved franchise back to national prominence and it was damn good. It has problems, sure. But it's positives far, far outweigh the negatives.

I know it's pretty crazy.
It's awesome and torturous being this excited for a series of movies that are going to be such a long time coming but all are story arcs I've never known beforehand.

That's never happened to me before

This is exactly how I feel. I was so uninthusiastic about Star Wars (besides the despecialized editions of the OT) thanks to the prequels. TFA has changed that, and it feels great :)
I know right?

I get excited for the Marvel films, but this is the first time I've been properly excited for a series of films.

Just finished reading the novelization. Some takeaways:

Books makes it clear that Starkiller destroys the seat of the Republic government with that blast. Leia has an envoy there when it explodes.

Hux rescues Kylo Ren per Snokes orders.

Repeatedly talks about Rey using anger to gain Force power, and a voice tells her to strike Kylo down when injured. She consciously turns away from the dark side.

Seems to hint that Finn doesn't have Force abilities, but it's kind of ambiguous.

Includes scene with Poe escaping Jakku.

Leia talks about Snoke seducing her son for a long time. That he has the potential to choose his path.

Kylo and Snoke hint that they know Rey's true identity. Snoke orders Ren to bring her to him. (Don't remember that from film.)

If I think of any other new info included, I'll add them to this post.
It is actually mentioned in the film.

Kylo couldn't read her mind, so Snoke orders him to bring her to him.

Yep, I never got lightsaber master from it. She is skilled in that kind of combat in a way which, coupled with her Force grasp, painted a clear picture of how that went down.

From what ive seen the majority here liked it

So I had a thought, what if captain Phasma isn't a stormtrooper, but just a highly skilled bounty hunter brought on to train stormtroopers, that would explain her not giving a damn and easily turning down the shields, because she is in it for the money.(kind of like Cade Bane and his relationship with the separatists in the clone wars cartoon)

Guess this might already have been debunked in some other piece of star wars media though.

I have yet to see negative comments.....and I'd be surprised to see any (although there has to be someone out there that didn't like it).
