I can't stop thinking about the film.

I'm finally excited for anything Star Wars again.

I thought the prequels would've done too much damage, but here I am thinking about the universe again.

This is exactly how I feel. I was so uninthusiastic about Star Wars (besides the despecialized editions of the OT) thanks to the prequels. TFA has changed that, and it feels great :)

I was just thinking about how the New Republic isn't really focused on, and I think an anthology movie going over the creation of the New Republic and First Order may be needed. Keep the Star Wars politics to a minimum, but I want to know how the state of the government transitioned from the fall of the Galactic Empire and the rise of the Rebellion.

I think that's spot on. The genuine chemistry between the Charachters is what made the movie such a success.

Also best moment of the whole movie as far as reveals go was when Rey diverts to the right and we get our first shot of the Millennium Falcon. My body demanded I cry out in happy surprise
You could hear people audibly groan in the theater at the convenience of that whole situation

Actually, amusingly the loudest reaction the movie got was people laughing when Kylo Ren took his helmet off for the first time. Whoops.

How did Kylo manage to kill everyone at Lukes academy? He doesn't seem like he's super powerful in this movie and he took out Luke and X number of other trainees?

Undercooked pork.

this might be the most cynical theater ive heard about in this thread

Not really.

Essentially a walking deus ex machina.
Rey doesn't really save the day though. She runs off like a coward and gets herself captured. Poe, Han and Finn are instrumental in getting Starkiller base destroyed. Rey shows skills but she doesn't end up as the hero like Luke in ANH.

It's not just a female character. Goku is a mary sue.

Battle of the Gods fixed that, but then Super came along.

She is the one who freed herself though.

Compared to Luke who got lucky or needed his friends to bail him out.

Again, glad I don't live there!

A female character that isn't a damsel in distress.

Wrong.

A Mary Sue character is a female character with no obvious flaws or shortcomings that faces no real difficulty in achieving her goals or is even put in a position that compromises or makes them vulnerable in any way. They are essentially too perfect for their own good.

The male counter part is known as a Gary Stu.

They groaned???
Man that's a bummer of a theater

That falcon reveal was amazing.

"Should we take that?!"

"No it's a pile of junk!"

*BOOM*

"Okay let's take the junk!"

Pans to the falcon. An excellent reference to the OT while also working as a comedic bit. One example of excellent writing in the movie.

I hope something more interesting happens to Luke than him dying. Solo's death was meaningful, noble. I just want Luke to succeed with something big.

Im kind of glad they created a new planet just to blow it up because people would be losing their shit if Coruscant or Corellia was blown up lol. Also its pretty cool that Starkiller base was in the unknown regions.

Just finished reading the novelization. Some takeaways:

Books makes it clear that Starkiller destroys the seat of the Republic government with that blast. Leia has an envoy there when it explodes.

Hux rescues Kylo Ren per Snokes orders.

Repeatedly talks about Rey using anger to gain Force power, and a voice tells her to strike Kylo down when injured. She consciously turns away from the dark side.

Seems to hint that Finn doesn't have Force abilities, but it's kind of ambiguous.

Includes scene with Poe escaping Jakku.

Leia talks about Snoke seducing her son for a long time. That he has the potential to choose his path.

Kylo and Snoke hint that they know Rey's true identity. Snoke orders Ren to bring her to him. (Don't remember that from film.)

If I think of any other new info included, I'll add them to this post.

No but I think Ren might be related to them.
Unless they had a secret daughter they never knew about.

They knew about her. When Rey told Han her name he became all weird and asked her for a job and then when she met Leia afterwards the hug was too familiar.

Only the bottom one moved.

I'm really surprised JJ kept her in after he saw her in one scene. It would have taken no effort at all to write her out and say the grief of what their son did killed her and pushed Han back to what he knows. She is a bit of baggage now for Rian to deal with

I guess me and my wife were the only people who thought the dude was more sinister and creepy with his helmet off. I certainly didn't notice a negative reaction in either of the two showings I was at.

Whattt Ewan was actually in it?

What are the chances of Snoke being an "evil" Yoda i.e. the hologram makes him bigger than what he is

The hologram was actually making him look much smaller than he actually is. He is bigger than the Star Killer. He is the final boss of Episode 9.

But for reals I enjoyed the movie a lot. I don't have much to really talk about. The plot was about as good as I would have hoped for a Star Wars sequel.

Like one person attempted to clap when the main theme started at the beginning and like no one went along

Definitely not the theater experience I was expecting unfortunately. :/
That's unfortunate. My theater was great with the clapping. Awesome reactions to all the jokes too.

Saw it for the 2nd time today and enjoyed it even more than I did originally. Really fantastic movie. I even found some of the answers to things that originally frustrated me! It's a great Star Wars movie.

Anyone feel a lot of similarities to the Timothy Zahn books? In that story Han and Leia have force sensitive twins.

I honestly thought for a minute that Kylo's real name was going to be Jason as a nod to Jacen.

At first I found it a little odd to reconcile his name was Ben, knowing that Luke named his son Ben in the EU, but I got around to that quick.

Rey is definitely a cooler name than Jaina though.

with that said Rey isn't veering to that, yet

I don't think so either, she's the protagonist and will probably be tested and go through your usual. In fact her getting away from stuff was through smarts and Force talents in this movie but I feel like her streak is going to wear out.

She is the one who freed herself though.

Compared to Luke who got lucky or needed his friends to bail him out.
From TVtropes:

• Are all Author Avatars Sues, even if they're well-written, realistic, and don't take over the story — and, are all Sues necessarily stand-ins for the author?
• Is the most important part how the author de-protagonist-izes every other character in the name of making the Sue seem even more awesome?
• If you have an impossibly competent character with a cool back story and an idealized personality, and they manage to be likable to most of the audience, are they still a Mary Sue, or does Suedom depend on the character being disliked because of their obnoxious perfection?
I think all of these questions apply to Rey. She's not the only character that does a lot of good things, Poe, Finn and Han also show themselves very capable. She's well-written and realistic, thus it doesn't seem impossible that she knows how to take care of herself and has certain talents. She seems well-liked and not obnoxiously perfect.

It seems like a reach to call her a Mart Sue just because she doesn't make any obvious mistakes or shows any deep character flaws. She's a bad-ass but I believed every second of it.

I don't know why but I feel that Poe is gonna somehow be the surprise Jedi of the new characters. Abrams likes twists so I wouldn't be shocked if he makes it happen somehow. Rey being Luke's daughter is too obvious.

Nah bruh.

Episode 9 final battle: Finn & Poe are both jedi apprentices, ReySkywalker leads as a jedi knight, and they finally convince Kylo to redeem himself.

Then they all fight the remaining Knights of Ren + a resurgent Sith army from beyond the Outer Rim. All with the aid of ancient jedi force ghosts, including an Anakin / Luke tag combo.
:D

Im kind of glad they created a new planet just to blow it up because people would be losing their shit if Coruscant or Corellia was blown up lol. Also its pretty cool that Starkiller base was in the unknown regions.
:\ I actually felt sad when I thought it was Coruscant. Knowing it's Not-Coruscant makes me not care at all. Regardless of whatever backstory it has.

To be honest theres no way a follow up to the OT would not involve kids of the original characters in some way. No doubt there will be things in these movies that were previously done in the old EU novels.

Rey doesn't really save the day though. She runs off like a coward and gets herself captured. Poe, Han and Finn are instrumental in getting Starkiller base destroyed. Rey shows skills but she doesn't end up as the hero like Luke in ANH.

Yes she does. She gets captured, but free herself using power she didn't even know about prior, master a lightsaber she held for the first time and defeat and adversary after adjusting her composure.

She's a Mary Stu, and it's weird alot of ppl in here is hoping she is one by not giving any reason for her op-ness. Her being a Skywalker would've work better to reduce the Mary Stu element.

BB-8: "Unimportant background character."

BB8 being the exception obviously.

That's unfortunate. My theater was great with the clapping. Awesome reactions to all the jokes too.
Yeah, my theater experience had clapping during the opening crawl, clapping during any fanservice moments, and clapping during Finn and Rey's hero shot moments. It was a nice experience.

I saw the movie in german and unfortunately the voice actor of Kylo Ren almost ruined the entire movie for me. Adam Driver has this very deep, very strong, typical villain voice and they seriously let a guy with a high pitched, squeaky voice who would better fit in a cartoon for children voice him.
I just couldn't take him seriously whenever didn't have the mask on.

Miscast of the year.

Otherwise the film was amazing.

There were some laughs in my theatre when Ren took off the helmet the first time as well. I have no idea why? Because he looked goofy (to them)? They recognised him from Girls?

For me it was great, he had Han's hair and was at that point showing power and confidence. So fuck those people. I loved everything about Driver's performance.

YES YES YES

That's probably my favorite reveal in the film.

ya I get that. Apparently the center of the New Republic government changed every so often among member planets on a rotation. Poor timing for the Hosnians.
