2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Can't find a regular laptop buying thread so I'll try here.

Helping my dad get a new laptop.

17" display
Touch screen
High resolution display
Powerful enough to play netflix HD vids, browse internet, etc.

He isn't an advanced user. No gaming.

No specific budget. Good value. I'm in Canada, so that may limit my options. Multiple suggestions welcome. Essentially good build quality and reliable is what I'm looking for besides the above.

Hey guys,

I'm looking to purchase a 14" or smaller gaming laptop, and am currently trying to decide between the Gigabyte P34W V5 and the MSI GS40.

From a pure specs/price comparison, here are the differences:

Pros of Gigabyte P34W
  • £80 Cheaper

Pros of MSI GS40
  • 256GB SSD (vs. 128GB)
  • 7200RPM HDD (vs. 5400RPM)

Because the specs and price are so similar, I guess it really comes down to things like build quality, fan noise, temperature etc.

Does anyone own either of these laptops and have some feedback they'd like to share? Or perhaps have an alternate laptop I should consider.

I personally prefer the more subtle design of the Gigabyte, compared to the giant logo on the back of the MSI. But if the Gigabyte has issues not in the MSI, then I'm sure I can put up with that logo :)

Thanks to anyone who can help!

I say take neither, and recommend you look for the Clevo P640RE in your region.

Thanks, any ideas where I might be able to buy that? I can't see it on the usual sites.

I'd contact MYSN, to see when they'll be getting it in, as I know it isn't even shipping in the US yet.

On Thursday I did see a Mysn/XMG rep on Notebook Review, who said it'll ony be a handful of days before the information is available. Relevant NBR thread.

I noticed when playing games on my gs60, the moment a game launches, the display switches to a slightly different mode that has a small amount of reddish tint to it and is darker. When playing the witcher 3, this switch is very evident because shadowy areas turn into extremely dark patches of blackness. Kind of like black crush. Running the game in windowed or borderless window fixes the red tint and black crush, but introduces a severe performance hit (the perf hit seems to be a witcher 3 only thing since other games run fine in borderless).

The black crush problem looks almost like how my TV plus pc/console would look if I didn't have the right rgb setting set (limited/full) but I don't see anything in the nvidia control panel that would point to a hint on how to fix this because its extremely barebones unlike the control panel for desktop gpus. It's like fullscreen runs in a display mode I have no control over, with settings dictated by the gpu.

Any way to fix this? To make fullscreen mode in games look like windowed?

They also sell it on Amazon for the same price.

And here's a review on the forum:

Seems like a solid machine, comparable to the Lenovo Y700 and Acer Nitro.

I'm actually debating between the Dell and the Alienware 15R2 (most likely going with the Alienware because of the construction/build quality).

Amazon version comes with a 256GB SSD. Can easily add an extra 512GB SSD for games or a hybrid if its 7mm. http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-763BLK-Full-HD-GeForce/dp/B015PYYDMQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450030248&sr=8-1&keywords=dell+inspiron+gaming+laptop

Do you have MSI True Color installed? If not get it on this page.

If you do, check what profile it's running under.

The laptop came with it installed and is using the srgb profile at the moment. The red tint looks extremely similar to the game profile but I don't think I see a way to do game specific profiles. Seems to be a global setting

EDIT:
So I found the section where you can assign profiles to specific applications. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like True Color has any influence over the slight red tinted screen mode that happens when a game runs in fullscreen.

Only other thing I can think of is clean installing your Nvidia drivers, or updating BIOS.

May do you better to ask here as well.

I've been waiting and waiting for the perfect laptop for my needs to reach my pricepoint but it's just not happening. What I want:

Non-negotiables:
Screen: IPS, something that looks good.
SSD: At least 128 GB already there.
Trackpad: Something not terrible, gimme at least one clicky button! I love the one on my Aspire5755G for example.
Speakers: Loud. Much louder than my Aspire 5755G.
Windows Installed: Yes

Negotiables:
Graphics/Processor: Something that can run SMT3 on PCSX2 very well.
Size: 15' preferred, 14 is fine.
Price: Around $1000.

Help?

I think I found the issue, and it might be similar to what's being discussed here:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/...t-in-full-screen-games-collaboration-thread-/

It looks like custom color calibration (like the standard windows color calibration tool) gets ignored completely by nvidia when running games in fullscreen. I just realized that the red tint I see is the exact same tint I would get when I enter the Windows calibration tool. It basically resets your color settings from the MSI True Color tool to default and the default settings for my laptop has a very slight tint (or maybe just warmer colors?) to it. So when running games, gamma and color settings get reset as well until you head back to the desktop (or run your games in a window)

As for the witcher black crush issue, I wonder if that is just a witcher problem. Other games don't seem to be affected

Hi folks. Looking to pick up a lappy for my wife. She uses it for web browsing, youtube, watching videos, and work documents. I was looking at this one or this one and adding a ssd. Anyone think I shouldn't go with this one and may recommend something in the same price range?

Also, will I run into any issues adding a ssd in a laptop? Sorry to the newb question. Laptops are outta my league.

Okay this is gonna sound weird, but when you get a laptop that comes with pre-installed Windows and an HDD, how do you reinstall Windows an SSD? I'd honestly rather the HDD not even be part of the equation (might even just move it to another computer).

The situation:
I'm still trying to get that 15" Dell Inspiron 7000, but the person helping me get it for Christmas doesn't trust Amazon under any circumstances. I actually don't think he's ever bought anything online. He'll pay more money just to have the "assurance" of a physical retailer.

My only other option is getting that same model from Dell.com (the only online computer store he'll trust). The model at Dell.com is identical but has a 1TB HDD instead of the SSD. So I figure we just get that and buy the SSD separately, but I want Windows to be installed on the SSD.

Edit: How long do you guys think it would take for Amazon to get in more of those Inspiron 7000's?

Hi KJack

The Samsung 850 Evo vs 950 PRO. Which do you recommend i know the 950 pro is 3-4 times faster but will i notice that difference in my games? Or is that difference negligible.

Might have to go for the i7 model of that Dell which only has an HDD. How do these hybrid drives work? This one says 8 gigs of the drive are solid state. I'm guessing that's the part of the drive where Windows is installed?

Thinking about getting a nice little laptop when the tax refund comes around.

Can anyone give any recommendations for something that would be great for digital art and gaming? I'd like to be able to paint on the go or with friends easily. There's just no chance of dragging my desktop about... That said, I don't want to feel limited. I want to be able to work in large canvases without any lag, delay, or slow down.

Several years ago, I used to have a 17" laptop.. It was just massive though.. I'd really like something small, hardy, and powerful.

It'd be great if I could get it for around 800, but I'd pay more for reliability.

I got the 7000 ordered from Amazon, but it's pretty much listed as back ordered now. Is there a usual timeframe for long long these things take to get back in stock?

Canada is like the worst country in the world, to expect a decent deal on a laptop, I'm sorry to say.

Do you need a dGPU for that work?

I think so. Going to be using Maya and GPU for rendering/encoding in Premiere would be nice. Also bumping up my budget to $1000 for sure.

Burn Windows ISO to DVD -> Install SSD -> Install Windows

Might as well take the fastest one, unless the price is obscenely higher.

Kinda weird last years model ASUS G751 with 970m was $1500 and this years G752 same price has a 965m (though it does have better stuff elsewhere)
That ROG tax. I'd go MSI or Clevo anyway.

Nah the 8GB section is really just a cache. You have zero control over anything it does.

I'd rather install an SSD, or buy the SSD model and install an HDD for storage.

awww I got skipped. I guess my demands were too dumb.

Sorry man, I actually had typed up a post on your situation a while ago, and somehow never posted it, though I was sure I did.

Revisit...

There are plenty of options IPS, but my main concern is that they'll all have semi-to-ultra shitty clickpads instead of actual buttons. Those are the Dell 7000, Lenovo Y50, Acer Nitro.

There's 2 options with actual buttons, but neither comes stock with an IPS. Those options are the MSI GE62 and the Sager NP7270.

No single machine has everything you want.

Looking to pick up a decent gaming laptop in the next few months. Any suggestions for ones that are:

- Under $1800
- Preferably 1080p screen but 900p would be acceptable
- Powerful enough to play games like Killing Floor 2, Overwatch, Rainbow Six: Siege, CS:GO at 60fps on Medium settings (or higher depending on the game)
- Reliable
- Has a screen that is at least 15"
- Isn't gargantuan

I'm in the US.

To be fair, recent driver updates have made Synaptics clickpads much more responsive and sensitive than they used to be. It's surprisingly convenient to move the cursor and click with a single finger.

They're still not any good for gaming though.

Welp GAF my current laptop is dying. I need some help. So here goes.

Country where it will be purchased: USA
Maximum budget: $700
Max size: 15.6 inches max
Planned usage: Mostly Creative Suite, since I'm an art student, but I'd like to at least play DOTA on relatively high settings.
I had a Lenovo Y580 and it just wasn't sturdy enough for me. I take relatively good care of it but I'd like something a little more solid.

I'm not good at this computer stuff so sorry if this isn't helpful enough.

You lack a lot of info; When you say isn't gargantuan what do you mean? Most gaming laptops are. Otherwise you need something dedicated slim with a 960m or 970m like a Razer Blade or Asus G501. HP Omen could be another option, but is that enough power for you, and are you willing to accept the thermal limits that comes with it? or the lack of upgradeability and the limited storage?

The latest revision to the Alienware 15 has me very excited as it's a very robust gaming notebook that really looks like a winner if you care about a solid build quality, long battery life and a weight (6 pounds) that is bearable. with over 6 and a half hours it can go for days which makes it more portable than most other laptops.

The problem with Alienware though is the same as with Apple. They are amazing at baiting you into going up your price bracket as the really nifty features are upgrades. There is a good 1080p screen, but the 1440p is better. But the 4k touch screen is amazing. When your laying down that kind of money it seems stupid not going for the touch screen that has that much better colors and contrast. and so it goes with many of the other features.
The one upgrade I would recommend not going for is the 980m. The cool thing about the machine is its low temperature. It is a fat machine that has a lot more room for larger fans and so it keeps things cool. But the 980m sorta makes it hotter and increases the power output. I would pair the machine with the 970m.

Take a look at Dave Lees channel. He has reviews for the HP Omen, the Razer Blade, Alienware 13 and 15, and the G501: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVYamHliCI9rw1tHR1xbkfw/videos?sort=p&view=0&shelf_id=2
There is also the Zenbook UX501 which might be an option too.

For that price range I don't think you're going to get something that feels really sturdy. Alienwares feel sturdy, as do Macs, but they are more expensive.

Unfortunately many laptops have flimsy lids, keyboards that give in when you press them(flexing) thanks to poor mixed plastic or other materials.
You could look at the Lenovo Yogas. Last time I played with one of those I was amazed at how sturdy it was.

If you are an art student you might benefit from the Yogas convertible design so you can draw on the laptop as well.

Well it's faster than Intel integrated solutions.

Might as well stretch for this one.

Mmm yeah. I guess performance would be better for me than body at this point. I've thought about the lenovo yoga before I'll check it out.

My laptop from late-2011 does this just fine and I bought it at half the price (900 $)

Guys I am going to pick a laptop in christmas. Budget should be around 1200€ I have kinda locked on this one http://www.webhallen.com/se-sv/dato...__1tb_hdd-gtx960_2gb-win_81&atcl=external:ref how good will it run most current games? Say I want to play the witcher 3? And what do you think about it?

GE72 is a really nice laptop. The GTX 960M is literally a desktop GTX 750 Ti, so judge it according to how the latter runs games.

Having a GTX 970M is the ideal target for this generation, but it'd obviously require a higher budget.

My laptop from late-2011 does this just fine and I bought it at half the price (900 $)

Specs?

So changed my mind from the star wars laptop, too caught up in the hype.

The lenovo y700 really caught my eye though. Has a skylake i7, DD4 ram, and a 4gb 960m.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-...lack/4474900.p?id=1219751154856&skuId=4474900

I have a top end desktop, but I want a gaming laptop to continue playing some games on the good. I know i won't be running at high settings, but that 960m should be able to handle the likes of fallout 4 and witcher 3 in some capacity yeah?

My current laptop is dying so I just bought this one. I really didn't want to spend more than $600 and for the price this one seemed like it had some nice specs. What kind of games can I expect to run on this? I understand I probably won't get decent performance on anything newish, but it should run games a couple years old pretty well, right?

Any insight on the Gigabyte P55W-BW1? It has a GTX970m and an i7; how does it do heat wise and material wise?

CPU can get 90+ unless you turn on the max fan speed.

I'd rather get the MSI GE62.

GTX 960M = GTX 750 Ti, literally, with differing clocks being the only difference.

Hi! So my laptop (HP Envy) is working, but it is starting to have some issues, so I am looking into a new one.

The HP was largely a terrible experience for the four years I have owned it, so I would like to try something else if possible.

I use my laptop just for writing papers, for pictures, and like really basic stuff. I don't use much memory on the laptop at all. I would like to be able to play games at medium/high performance on it though.

I read above that the Alienware was good for games, but is kind of expensive.

My price maximum is probably at like $1,000. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

non-taxing PS3/360 gen, sure. Current gen, lowest possible settings at best.

With which card does the GTX 965M and the 970M compare then?

Matey, notebookcheck is not 100% accurate on everything but I think they are often on mark.

965m; http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-965M.134120.0.html

Thanks to the increased efficiency, the GeForce GTX 965M performs similar to the previous Kepler-GPU GeForce GTX 870M (1344 shader, 192-bit GDDR5). The more expensive, also Maxwell-based GTX 970M (1280 shader, 192-bit GDDR5) is a further 35 to 40 percent faster. Overall, the GTX 965M is fast enough to run demanding games as of 2014/2015 with high details and FullHD resolution. In some titles, even additional quality features like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are possible.

970m; http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-970M.126694.0.html

Thanks to the increased efficiency, the GeForce GTX 970M performs somewhat better than the former top model, the GTX 880M and should sit comfortably as the second fastest model after the GTX 980M. According to our benchmarks, it is about 15 % faster than the GTX 880M depending on the scenario. The GTX 980M is a further 20 to 30 percent faster than the GTX 970M. Overall, the GTX 970M is fast enough to run even the most demanding games with highest details and FullHD resolution. Additional quality features like anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are also not a problem for this card in most titles as of 2014.

I think a general rule of thumb is that a "m" (mobile laptop card) is around a numeral or half behind the desktop option which is not limited by heat output or thermal restrictions. A 970m might be around the same as a desktop GTX 960. Maybe a bit faster.

The waiting game is really not something that I recommend obliging in, but.. These Maxwell cards have been out for almost a year now, and Nvidia have hyped the Pascal architecture a lot. I feel that, if you're going to have this laptop for 3+ years or don't upgerade often.. I mean, Pascal really looks to be a much bigger gain than just the usual 5-15% speed bump. They really, really are hyping it up. It's just hard to say if it will deliver.

Nivida sometimes disappoint (Fermi) but they are also capable of redeeming themselves (Maxwell). The other question is also- if Pascal is not here until Q2, can you afford to wait perhaps 6 more months before they appear?

Skylake is here now, and it is amazing. Skylake is here and finally delivers on the promise first hinted at with Sandy Bridge. Features kept getting skipped and delayed through sandy, ivybridge, haswell, broadwell, and then finally skylake. This CPU is magic. and it sings with maxwell.
It's very hard to recommend if one should wait or buy now.

Very informative thank you. I won't take your advice to wait though because first I already waited enough and 2nly when this new series release it will be expensive and do we have any confirmation it will be on laptop's too? Because I want a laptop not a desktop.
