They had an inside man. How exactly did they figure out how to blow up the death star in ANH? How, we are now being filmed, this is how you blow it up Luke.

My point isn't HOW, it's the TIME, aka the struggle, behind defeating it. There is zero struggle in the new film.

In ANH, it was a big deal to take down a death star. In TFA, it was way too fast and made the third act feel completely false. If the film had been building up to this third act, like ANH, it would have been earned. It wasn't earned in the new movie.

There are no stakes, no realistic tension, if the Resistance can defeat it so quickly after learning about it.

If that bothers you then you simply lack the perspective of what society can be like these days. It's a lot like asking "why does everything have to be about race?" to shut down a racial debate.

Maybe because marysue-ism exists even outside of that. When a mary sue exists, it's called out, whether you're that character from the Inheritance trilogy cycle or that girl from Twilight.

I can see where people are getting from, but I feel like it hasn't been an issue since you get stuff like "tank girl is awesome badass and shit" even though she has tendency to be a mary sue too. Though I guess people are talking about movies specifically so maybe there's that.

It's total nonsense. The Republic maintains a standing military but instead of deploying it against the First Order they... fund a ragtag little Leia squad that doesn't even have a capital ship to its name (?). But the First Order is big enough to build a planet-sized weapon system so, like, maybe the Republic should fucking get involved directly.

I heard that apparently the new republic decided against having a standing army, which is why Leia founded the resistence. Wish it were explained in the movie tho. Lol.

I generally don't even have a problem with it, but it just entirely too extreme in this. The first time she sits in the Falcon she is doing the most insane techniques and repairing and modding the ship better than Han ever had. She hadn't even been in the thing for a day. When she JMT the trooper, I was done. The most recent Cruise missile Gary Stu I have seen is Jack Reacher. In that, he at least had been a career military detective so what he was doing in the movie was in line with what a "heroic main character with movie named after him" would do.

Empire established that Han wasn't all that great at repairing his ship.

It seems like the New Republic is overly pacifist, which lead to this whole mess.

Hey, why are they called The Resistance instead of just the Rebel Alliance anyways?

Maybe we'll find out that the Republic wasn't that great and that the First Order and the Resistence are two different factions that formed in order to prevent the old establishment from getting back in poweras the Republic again.

Yeah. Basically they are Europe while Hitler started taking over where they say "Well we don't like this but we don't want to get involved", however they realize that something needs to be done so backing the resistance is their way of fighting without publicly taking a stance

Or that's how I read it, anyway

Would have loved to have seen this addressed in the film. As it stands now, it's just confusing what the hell is going on between all the different factions.

I'm kind of baffled they dropped the ball on this so much in the new film.

This is also spelled out in the first Aftermath book. Mon Mothma against advice decides to cut back the New Republic armed forces by 90%.

You guys aren't discussing the important things, like did Finn get friend zoned with that kiss to the forehead? and does Luke now have a better chance with Rey than Finn? All alone in that remote planet.

Just wait for the TFA porn parody.

Luke can ejaculate with the force, no hands needed. I don't think he cares about Rey at all.

The new baddies CG face was awful my only complaint and hopefully they deal with him more in a future installment because to be honest you coulda cut him all out and nothing would have been effected

I really don't understand the political underpinnings of this universe.

And thankfully, I don't care to understand it either. Bar none worst part of the prequels.

Hey, Chewie's there with 'em, and now that Han's dead, you know he's on the prowl again.

I don't think he's friend zoned yet. We all saw that hug she gave him when they came for her. He just has to okay his cards right

Maybe it was somewhere but got cut for time? I am so curious about stuff that got cut. I'm sure Chrome trooper did stuff somewhere. She's too cool not too. And I feel like there was a scene missing with Rey's whole family thing after the last vision. It's a big movie, but feels like it was supposed to be a little bit bigger.

They mention needing the Republic's fleet during their mission briefing before their attack on Starkiller Base.

I think the Republic has an army, they're just not officially at war with the First Order and are supporting the Resistance in a proxy war ala US/Taliban VS USSR.

Yeah this is something I've been thinking about more as well. I previously said that I felt the movie followed A New Hope a bit too close for my tastes (I know tons of people have said this), but this is yet another example. It kinda felt, again, like a ragtag resistance against this mighty evil force when that should have been flipped. The "good guys" are in control now supposedly (until all their planets got blown up of course, lol). I would have liked it more if the baddies were just Snoke, Kylo, and a scrappy tiny little stormtrooper force or something on the run, evading the Republic. Kind of a terrorist organization doing small, secret attacks. I dunno.

Still really liked the movie, but definitely gonna keep mulling it over and pulling it apart.

Marketing for this movie so strong they paid Hillary Clinton to shout it out at the end of the debate just now lmao. First bags of oranges, now the presumptive President of the United States.

Well guys I'm in my seat. This is it.
I already am emotional.

There are many like it, but that one is yours.
