Yeah I think its so much more powerful when your an adult because it becomes so tragic. Luke fighting his father and not wanting to. Vader fighting his son and not wanting to. Even the music playing during their battle is somber. Its a very emotional scene
The fights in Episode 7 are the best lightsaber fights in the franchise that aren't Luke vs Vader.
1) Vader/Luke ROTJ
2) Vader/Luke ESB
3) Finn/Rey vs Kylo Ren TFA
4) Maul vs Obi-Won/Qui-Gon TPM
5) Obi-Wan vs Grevious ROTS
6) Obi-Wan vs Vader ANH
7) Obi-Wan/Anakin vs Dooku AOTC
8) Yoda vs Dooku AOTC
9) Yoda vs Palpatine ROTS
Honorable mention: Finn vs FN-B4D455 (since it's not a lightsaber vs lightsaber fight I didn't include it)
You know after writing that post I remembered that I didn't just pull that reasoning out if nowhere. It was the legit official explanation for a while. Not sure if the different lightsaber forms survived the EU nuking but most PT Jedi did train in a more blaster defensive form. While someone like Dooku actually focused on a more saber to saber combat oriented style. I can't remember what all the 7(?) forms specialized in anymore.
Just saw it (half full theatre for a 9:30 start on a Monday?). Really liked it, much more than the prequels. Managed to avoid spoilers too. Had to laugh at Phasma and 3PO though. Is she confirmed to be a recurring character because she did nothing in this one and the her black series toy kept selling out in seconds so I thought she had a bigger role. And why did 3PO have the red arm? Oh well, he had his regular one back at the end anyway.
The only part I didn't like was how Rey knew mind tricks to use on the stormtrooper even though she didn't even know what the force was.
Some parts were hilarious too and I laughed more than some recent comedies I've seen.
Probably mentioned already, but the moment that Kylo Ren and Rey are fighting for control of the lightsaber, and the music plays from ANH when Luke discovers his slain aunt and uncle...
...chills, just chills.
I recognized it immediately. Music is truly powerful in the way it can evoke emotional memory.
The ROTJ lightsaber duel between Vader and Luke will never be topped though. How could it? They'll never have that emotional heft to a final duel again. Or at least, not that I can fathom.
Kylo's lightsaber, like his training, is apparently incomplete. Like his character, it looks unstable.
The lightsaber fights are definitely lifted from the OT, just with some modern finesse and intensity thrown in. They are great.
man my biggest complaint was the starkiller base
I figured that it would just you know, kill the star and with it the surrounding system
but I guess we had to have big impractical lasers and explosions
Even though im not big on the prequels, there's more tension in the Darth Maul fight than anything in VII.
Just that one scene alone with Maul pacing back and worth while Qui-Gon kneels to mediate makes watching that dreadful thing a bit easier to do.
I really liked Rey getting the lightsaber and it felt like such a badass moment but I have major issues with her force usage as it stands. I hope the next couple of films details her having had some sort of light jedi training before Luke exiled himself because otherwise it's going to kinda bother me. The fight itself felt a bit hard to follow but that might have been because the screen was kinda dark in my theater
Where do you slot Obi-Wan vs Anakin ROTS?
I'll bring the pics here!Yes! Check the Star Wars Merch thread for some pics of these guys.

Maybe I need to refresh my memory, but the drama of Luke's struggle with Vader stood out to me more than the actual saber clashing. The overall progression of the final battle and Vader's use of the force to ruin Luke's day with pieces of flying junk is top tier though. Easily one of the highlights of the whole series.WHAT?
The choreography in the ESB fight was top tier. What the hell.
There is no way in hell that Rey is Leia/Han's daughter. Come on.

Yea Kylo is shown to be so powerful, grabbing people from across the room, flinging them, detecting and stopping blaster bolts in mid air, yet has a tough fight taking on Finn who got owned by a stormtrooper? I mean yea they kept making a fuss about him being injured but that blaster shot musta really nerfed Kylo hardcore.
Hey, never say never. I could totally see a final duel with the characters from this movie hitting those highs or even higher depending on how good their development is through the second movie.
It might not mean quite as much to us as audience members since we're older now, but I think it could be outstanding indeed.
Yeah it will be hard to top. Watching it again last week it was just as powerful as the first time I ever saw it.
On a side point ROTJ is fricken awesome.

Did you see what Chewie's blaster was doing to regular mooks throughout the whole film?Yea Kylo is shown to be so powerful, grabbing people from across the room, flinging them, detecting and stopping blaster bolts in mid air, yet has a tough fight taking on Finn who got owned by a stormtrooper? Yeah, they nailed the visceral aspect for sure.Sound design on both lightsabers and any use of the force went up a fuck-ton of levels in VII. So, so good. Finn igniting his for the first time, as well as the final duel, gave me a physical buzz that I haven't had in a cinema since Gravity.
Great stuff.
Leia's Force powers have always manifested themselves to be strongest in basically super long range detection. She's got some powerful force Wi-Fi, she saved Luke's life by being able to locate him at the end of ESB, and she felt Han's death as it happened. Obi-Wan was also very empathetic in this way, he felt Alderaan. Luke didn't feel shit, he's kind of a jack of all trades.I was also disappointed Leia apparently never bothered to learn any Force abilities. Like apparelty at some point a conversation occurred where Luke tells her "you can move shit with your mind" and she's like "not interested that's dumb."

No, I think he's right, it won't be topped. The drama, tension and relationship between Vader and Luke, and the role reversal at the end of the fight, I don't think it's possible for the new trilogy to achieve that.

You say this, but based on ANH there was no way in hell that Vader was Luke's father.

Assuming that the ones in Episode VIII will have more speed to them with Ren and (assuming) Rey's completed training by then, it'll be the perfect mix between the OT and PT duels.
Anyone else think that Rey was using a little power from the dark side in the final duel? She seemed really angry.

#5. Edited my original post because i forgot that fight

I'm not that into Star Wars, so I'm just going to see it as an action movie. And if the action isn't good enough, I won't waste my money.
Also, yeah, ROTJ is glorious. I don't understand at all why that movie gets as much shade thrown at it as it does.
The movie explicitly showed you a couple of times how powerful the bowcaster is. I'm sure getting shot in the stomach with one probably fucking hurt.
