[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I really hope Finns not force sensitive, I feel his alot cooler in more of a Han solo everyday man role. Leave the magic powers to Rey and Kylo, let Finn become a Han solo for a new generation.

He also got his spine pretty much rekt, I wonder if he will get any cybernetic enhancements.

Finn is also a Skywalker. Leia banged Lando and that's why her and Han have a frosty relationship.

Twist: Finn and Rey are the twins.

There's an alternate version of the Star Wars scene from The Lego Movie were Han is like "Is that the line you used on Leia, you fucking bastard?"
in my head

I just got back from seeing it. (First time in a theater since Episode 2, by the way. The theater experience is something I could do without.)

Rey sure went from 0 to force competent in a hurry. I can kind of accept that she can handle a lightsaber a bit, since we saw her early in the movie using a staff (or whatever it was). The jedi mind trick and the force grab of the saber were like "what?" Needless to say, the backstory for that character will be interesting.

RIP Han Solo.

Yeah the whole explanation for that, about how she was stealthing around the ship and practicing her force abilities and how she would be more dangerous as time passed, felt pretty...forced.

Rey falls to the dark side and is beating around Luke and cutting off his other hand.

"Leia never told you what happened to your daughter"
"She's dead! Ben killed her!"
"No, I am your daughter."

Still not convinced she is a Skywalker of Luke. Could she be a Solo? Rey and Kylo twins? It rhymes and twins are genetic (though usually skip generations). That would make her a Skywalker on leias side still.

Driver is like 10 years older than her. I mean I guess hollywood makeup is pretty amazing, but by the time episode IX comes out the twins thing is gonna look pretty unrealistic visually. Unless Kylo decides to always keep the mask on from here on out or something.

We have official word straight from Lucasfilm that Kylo Ren is about 30 and Rey is about 20.

There is no twin theory.

The saga films are about the Skywalkers, Kathleen Kennedy says the saga films will always be about Skywalker family drama. It is what separates them from the spin-offs.
Yeah, I've brought their ages up several times they're definitely not twins, certainly not siblings either.

So glad Ren didn't die. Lucas' biggest mistake was killing Darth Maul.

Also Finn was fucking awesome!

Also im so glad they ignored the prequels and went back to basics with the lightsaber fights.

I also hate the fact they we are back to 1 hero jedi to save everyone. I loved the idea of Luke training new jedi, possibly seeing more alien races like in the prequels (possibly one of the only good things about them). But nah, let's kill em all off before the movie. YOU ARE OUR LAST HOPE.

He was wounded and mentally unstable, and even though she's untrained, she's clearly more powerful with the Force than he is. She held off his mental probing and read his mind, and she overpowered his pull on the lightsaber. It wasn't until she started tapping into her anger at the end that she actually was pushing back against him. The first half of that fight is her on the run from him, acting purely on defense.

Yeah she did start to get angry, with Snoke saying Kylo still has light in him i wonder if we will get a double face heel turn at some point during the trilogy.

I absolutely agree with this, Ren is my favorite character in the movie and I'm so glad we can see his journey alongside the others. Maul sorta had to die to make room for Anakin as Palpatine's apprentice but eh, he could have made it 1 more movie. He was a cool character, in a Boba Fett sorta way.

I mentioned before that I want Rey's ass kicked due to getting way in on her head in the sequel. This would really hammer home a notion of "if this universe is getting saved, it's gonna be a team effort damn it."

watched the movie a couple days ago and I thought some moments were just terrible acting/didnt make sense. Most of them were b/c of finn. His transformation and actions just werent all that believable to me. Also how can finn use a lightsaber if he isnt a jedi and wound kylo. That didnt make any sense to me either.

Rey beating Kylo just killed the hype for the rest of the trilogy. He got bested by somebody who has never picked up a lightsaber before.
Even if he completes his training he still got bested by Rey who has had no force training, no lightsaber training.

Will be interesting to see how they salvage the character

Its a new thing called character development. Somewhat new to the franchise.

Kylo Ren was not in control and was severely wounded. His lack of focus and inner turmoil on top of being wounded was the reason for his defeat.

EDIT:

You don't need to be a Jedi to wield a lightsaber, he was a top ranked Stormtrooper. Kylo Ren was already wounded by Chewbacca's cross bolt, a weapon they clearly made clear during the movie packs a huge punch. Besides that, Finn and Rey were both on the defensive 90% of the time against him.

Here's something I've suspected for awhile but having watched the film twice I think more might be the case. This awakening in the force I don't believe is centered only around Rey. But around many individuals throughout the galaxy Finn and Poe included. I'm reminded of a few episodes of the Legend a Kora I saw some months ago and in that series there came a point where people who couldn't bend all of sudden could.

I don't take that as her getting angry. It seemed more she was retreating to the calmness of the light, which unlocked some more of the power of the force for her.

Yeah, there was some actual weight to the saber fight. It wasn't some flashy emotionless sequence that gets so ridiculous that you get tired and stop caring.

You bring up a good point. How come the Empire is solely human comprised? I can understand the clone army being all human. But the Empire is, and the New Order is entirely human. You never hear any plot about them being Human Supremacists. Not from them themselves, or from the rebels or resistance that opposes them.

Palpatine's only objective it seemed was to govern the world through the dark side of the force, and seemed to promote imperialism. But still, there really is not plot device that explains that lack of other species in the empire. The only time we see them, is when bounty hunters are hired out to hunt down Solo.

I dunno man, she was going hard on him, gritting her teeth, attacking him while he was down. That's some darkside shit. She only looks calm when she closes her eyes, probably connecting to the force. But when she comes back out swinging, it felt like she was channeling how pissed she was about Han and (presumably) Finn being killed by this guy. Hence why they get separated at the end there - to prevent her from going too far. But now she has had a taste of how tough she is when she taps into that rage.

This would help, but I want more Jedi dammit!

I also want Ren to rely on help often, to really make it a struggle and to show that the first order is more than just Ren and Snoke. The OT seemed like the empire WAS Vader and I feel like that was a bit of a misstep.

LOL the "Rey shouldn't have beaten Kylo" camp is VERY SUSPECT. I mean you compare her to this guy:

Kyle_katarn1.JPG

Dude goes unconscious and then wakes up with the force. A beloved EU character!

Same thing happens to a girl after touching Anakin's lightsaber and OH SHE IS AN OVERPOWERED MARY SUE. I'm sorry a girl isn't good enough for this arbitrary magical dogshit that is the Force!

Kylo Ren and Snoke thrive on fear and intimidation probably because they're fearful themselves. Finn and Rey now think he's just a fucking asshole AND wounded. The intimidation didn't work out in the snow because Kylo is a big scared tittybaby! Rey, someone who is used to beating up fucking assholes with a stick, had the upper hand for sure.

I don't see why Rey has to be either a Skywalker or a Kenobi. Why not both?

I wouldn't be surprised if Ben had a daughter who Luke ended up with and had Rey with.

Clones were a thing since ANH.

Yeah, but we didn't know that clones meant Stormtroopers being clones.

I remember early rumors of episode 2 were the Jedi being cloned to fight like, Mandalorians or something because there weren't enough Jedi and that's why it was called the Clone Wars.

Yeah we had the 1 new alien X-wing pilot (who had a screen time of 5 seconds and then died) but there should really be a lot more fighting with the resistance at least. All the aliens are side characters, filling the "crazy or comic relief" roles, but I think there's potential for a lot more.

I don't know man. Like it's entirely possible that Kenobi while on Tatooine in his exile possibly found love, but there just isn't any precedent for that though you know?

Just got out of my second viewing and I enjoyed it more so the second time. I noticed a few small things that I missed the first time. I REALLY think everyone knows about Rey's origin story and they are keeping it hidden from her.

Is Snoke supposed to be a human? Well, badly disfigured human. Or do we finally have a alien main bad guy?

Rogue one's main character is Rey's mother.

I don't see any implication that Rey will get arrogant. It took a team effort of Chewie,Finn and Rey to take down Kylo Ren.

To be fair, Maz mentioning "the Sith" feels more inline with a prequel reference since the "Empire" immediately follows. The Sith were a much bigger deal during the PT era.

But yes, I know the Sith were a thing even during the OT.

Just got out of my first viewing and I didn't like it at all. Utterly forgettable experience. Hell, I remember watching Episode 1 in the theatre and finding that more memorable. Haven't watched it since '99 and still have fond memories of it. Might've been too young to see through its shittiness but it sure did something for me back then. The Force Awakens? Not so much.
