[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

One thing I never was clear on is, what does it mean to "bring balance to the force" anyway?

I feel like that prophecy gets all kind of weird interpretations... I feel like it's going to make a come back.

Like, the Light ruled for centuries and then Anakin brought the Sith to dominance... Was that not "restoring the balance"? Or Luke coming and removing the Sith, is that "balance"? Wouldn't you need equal parts Dark and Light in coexistence to really be balanced?

That's what I think maybe Kylo comes in.

He isn't a Sith, it's not about a rule of 2... Snoke is some awkward ancient Dark being who interprets the prophecy another way than the Sith do, his Knights of Ren are all Dark worshipping force users and he's on a mission to destabilize the Galaxy or some such to be revealed motive... And Kylo is actually the embodiment of the "balance" - he is both equal parts Light and Dark, Snoke knows this and wants to use it. This is even implied in the visual diction that's canon.

Anyway I never understood how the Jedi so black and white thought they meant he would bring balance would destroy the dark side. Seems like a thin reading to me.

IIRC Lucas said the Force is naturally light, but people being evil created the dark side which is like a cancer weakening the force. Any time an asshole goes dark, the force starts getting out of balance again.

the best thing in this movie was Kylo's ship, by the way.

Do we even know if Snoke is force sensitive or not yet?
He's training Kylo in the ways of the force, so I assume so.
Luke might not have been honing his skills tho. Might have just been having a pity party with ghost Ben and Yoda about how you have to go into exile whenever a Darkside user hurts your feelings.
I hope they don't go that route.
I have a feeling Luke will have to an Obi-Wan disappearing trick sometime in trilogy. You know why?
Because it's like poetry, it rhymes.
You know, it'd still be better than literally killing him like they did Han (which I understand why they had to). I'd be ok with that, if that's what it takes.

Also, it's not something that happens often in these movies.

Only Ep III has really scratched the itch of a modern SW space battle

Still one of my favorite scenes from III. Also the best opener of the prequels. Even though there were those stupid buzz droid or whatever, it was still really fun to see.

"Let them fly between us." Man using the force in space combat is just a cool idea. I need to see it better realized than just trench runs.

nah man, Rey beat Kylo once already. He is about to train harder and beat her.

Kylo: Rey search your feelings you know it is true.

Rey: but it can't be...why did you kill our father.
Nah. Rey is totally Luke's kid. Seems pretty clear to me.

It seems that one of the differences with the Knights of Ren and the Sith is that the Knights seem to have no patience for the old rule of 2. They seem to be out in the open, work in groups and no no intention of hiding their numbers, brute forceing everything because they want results now.
Witch is a good fit for Kylo's temperament.

No, I think "Kylo" is the chosen name (like Vader or Sidious) and "Ren" is the title (like Darth).

i think it's more like "Ren" being their 'knight's order's name" than a title.

Like - there's the "Spice Girls" and you got Ginger Spice, Baby Spice, Scary Spice, Posh Spice and Sporty Spice.

If Rey is Han's daughter I am 100% sure that Han didn't even know.
Let's be serious. Han is not the type of guy to attend his own kids birth or fly Leia to the hospital in 12 parsecs.
Therefor the twin theory and Rey being Ben's sister seem totally viable.

The only other non-outlikeapunk way I could see Luke dying is if we're with the route of Rey getting owned to kingdom come and mortally wounded, he does some Force life-energy transfer to her and sacrifices his life.

Kinda sounds silly though

Just got back from my second viewing.

Han shot first! I didn't notice on my first viewing and this may have been talked about already. On the freighter Han punches one of the gang members, then pauses, grabs him and throws him directly into the mouth of the beholder thing. While in mid air the gang member's blaster fires off. I took it as a nod.

makes sense. Rule of 2 was silly anyway.

the chump in return of the jedi is that guy though, he's a wholly different beast between empire and return of the jedi.

It's predictable, but I hope Rey is Luke's kid. That way, he accomplished something of note during the 30 year break between RotJ and TFA. Otherwise, the only thing he's done is unleash a monster that killed the most loved Star Wars character and went on a pity trip to the middle of nowhere for a decade.

I think Han grew up. It's clear by how is relation with his son affected him. With how he was present as a father for years. I don't think they are twins.

Rey is Luke's daughter, Kenobi's granddaughter, or of a completely new lineage.

Not sure if this article has been posted but it breaks down a lot of problems with the story and how fans have turned a blind eye to the problems bc it's Star Wars and bc of the nostalgia.

Sorry, not meaning to single your post out. Because you are just posting a link.

But I hate, hate how despite the evidence of Star Wars fans breaking down every movie and every scene in the universe and for the most part hating on at least half of the movies made we are somehow blinded and unable to see movies for what they are.

The lectures about nostalgia and low expectations are just ridiculous to me. If anything as a group we expect more and require more.

I totally get a Dark Camelot vibe from the whole thing.
Like Snoke is some evil King Arthur on his ruined throne and he has sent out his Knights of Ren on a grail quest [in this case, Luke Skywalker] and in this story we just saw Kylo's quest, which put him in contact with Luke's holy relic Lightsaber... The other 6 Knights are chasing down their own leads throughout the Galaxy.

Considering the holy Grail, Snoke is probably using all of these people to extend his life somehow... Beings obviously ancient, wouldn't surprise me if he were dying and wants to find immortality and sit atop the Galaxy from his dark throne or something. The Knights all seem young and impressionable, would make for easy and powedulful disciples

either way luke got a lot of explaining to do. you would think he would learn from Yoda and Kenobi about how hiding gives power to the sith.

This sir... is pretty damn amazing. Awesome if you nailed it.

We're not entirely sure if we're dealing with Sith. It looks more like a different faction of Force-users.

Some of them look like they're wearing modified Mandalorian armor.

I think the twist will be that Luke actually isn't Rey's father. Luke just wants to make her think he is her father to protect her from the awful truth, that Rey is the daughter of Sheev Palpatine (which is why her force powers are better than Skywalker Kylo's and why her foster family abandoned her.)

In other words...

No fun allowed.

I'm glad I don't live in a world where I have to turn a critical eye to every single thing I consume.

Wasn't really silly, Palpatine came to power because of the slow patient waiting game the Sith played over generations.

i don't think "the sith" (as in, the other generations before him) were in on the plan. Seeing as they're a bunch of backstabbing shitheads.
They're not all patiently doing some sort of "long play spanning multiple generations". Palpatine was simply such a huge mastermind.
