[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

It certain had a particular feel about it which I think suited the Jurassic franchise.

Yeah I think you're right about that. Someone mentioned above that Jurassic was too CG heavy but Trevorrow was denied practical effects. He wanted more practical. They gave him the one so that Pratt and Howard could interact with it being an emotional scene. Colin isn't against practical and even prefers it and this will be a different environment than the one he was in with directing Jurassic.

Kylo Ren isn't as great as you think he is. Shitty students exist. There's plenty of rationalization for it. Hell, just look at his saber, it doesn't even work right.

People expected Maul/Vader 2.0 and didn't get that.

This is OT jedi, not PT fucking Hogwarts Jedi.

Pretty much. Kylo just isn't as good at sword fighting as he thinks he is. Which fits with the whole theme of his character.

I mean who has he really been up against after wiping out Luke?

Maul had Sidious and maybe even fought some Jedi before TPM, Dooku was a Jedi, same with Vader, they had lots of real world experience.

I know opinions and all but what? Into Darkness is a poorly paced mess. If you didn't like TFA that's fine but comparing it to that is something I don't get.

But this was exactly that. The pacing in this was... well, was there any pacing? Can we call it pacing? it was just go go go go action action action the entire time.

There's zero story development in this. ZERO. The characters were thin as cardboard. Even the little droid was boring. Fuck, look at him next to the two original droids to see how pointless and lame he actually is.

They tried to make him all cute like Wall-E to sell a bunch of toys. It's all really bad, and plainly obvious that this movie was created and directed by Disney executives.

We know Shmi gave birth to anakin, those most powerful force user in existence. What if Shmi found a way to harness and manipulate the midichlorians to travel through time and space?!

Because it's been evidenced time and again with Star Wars.

To be sure, there have always been people who had problems with the prequels, but with every single one of them, we had a bunch of people thinking they were awesome or better than the last one, only to come down from the hype later and revise their opinion.

I like the movie, but it has enough flaws that I can easily see the positive consensus swing the other way once the hype cools down. All it takes is another Plinkett-esque review to permeate through culture and this movie's generally-liked status is gone.

This is a false narrative. Sorry but it is super annoying.

Snoke is ancient evil

Luke discovers ancient Jedi/Sith baby in temple

Knights of Ren and Luke's gang fight

Luke escapes with ancient baby

Battle ensues over baby

Only way to win is to send Rey back to have Anakin using the ancient temple

Snoke wants to stop it, change the timeline

i don't believe this at all. Actually, I do up until the time travel

I hope irrational prequel hate doesn't keep Ewan or Hayden out of episode 8. So much they could do with their appearances. Anakin counseling Luke and Rey, so good. Could tie in all the movies in a magnificent way.

And yes I am someone who scores the prequels pretty low but I'd still love it.

"Ren! I am your Grandmother! Search your feelings, you know it to be true. And put on a coat or you'll catch your death out there."

Actually it could be very cool like that
Rey: "JOIN the good side! Like Anaking did!!"
Kylo: "NOOO! You didn't even know him!"
Rey: "NO! I'M HIS MOTHER"!

No it isn't.

If you were in theaters in 2002, you saw people whooping and hollering when Yoda kicked ass. Now those same people whine about how that scene is poorly-staged and "has no emotion."

If you think people's opinions on this movie are set in stone right now, you're wrong. Things are going to change and eventually there will be memes and culturally-accepted narratives about it, just like there were with the prequels. Maybe not to the same degree, but there will be some of it. There always is.

Shmi is the light-side version of Palpatine. How blind we all were.

Watto wasn't really a slave master. He was hiding the most important force users in plain site. This is why he was trained to not be susceptible by mind tricks. This is why Watto always used a weighted die when making bets. He wouldn't gamble with their lives.

But then Qui-gon (the apprentice of Dooku) cheated Watto in a bet. He stole the ownership of Anakin and forced him into apprenticeship. He made him a tool senate.

I fear that the new directors will try to keep pandering to the OT crowd as much as possible, to the point of the annoying "Hey remember THESE from the original movies? Do you? Huh?".

That said, I wouldn't like Force Ghosts of any kind, PT or OT to appear here. Voices I can tolerate, though.

The same thing will happen to this movie. People will come to their senses after the marketing brainwashing passes through.

The only confidence I have in him comes from Spielberg apparently giving him his blessings as a successor to that style of filming.

But their is nothing he has really tangibly done that I'm fond of.

Spielberg also gave Michael Bay his blessing for Transformers and has said more than once that what Bay has done with the franchise is similar to creating "a Star Wars for a new generation" or whatever. So based on that, I hope everyone is okay with it when they announce Bay as the director for the next Star Wars trilogy! :)

Could have been michael bay then

I refuse to believe actors like Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson, who are at the peak of their careers would partake in a Michael Bay film concluding the sequels of this iconic franchise. Since when is being in a Michael Bay film considered an honor or career defining moment. Of course these guys could do it for the money..

James Cameron also gave his blessing and approval for Terminator Genisys.

"Blessing" by a good director means jack shit nowadays.

Anecdotal as all hell. Some people enjoyed that and still do, but some were complaining about it back then too.

I saw people hollering at that Yoda fight and the entire time I was thinking it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. I may not have been able to articulate why it bothered me at that young age, but it sure as hell didn't sit well with me. And just about every Anakin/Padme scene was so fucking painful to listen to. Not because "UGH LOVE STORIES ARE DUMB" but because it in no way sounded anything like what human beings would say.

At least a Michael Bay film would nail some cool explosions and action scenes.

Every single action scene in this was bland.

But like people immediately hated Into Darkness and the prequels when they came out. That isn't happening this time because this ones much better.

No, this is just a much bigger movie franchise. People want this to succeed. They're try to use all the force possible to see it through. In the end, it's a crappy movie.

"Only a master of evil, Darth!" doesn't sound like anything a sane human being would say, either.

But this is fucking Star Wars.

As a producer Michael Bay is quite accomplished. He has what it takes to grow something on a massive scale. That doesn't mean he has the artistic directing chops, or the integrity to make political moves for the art like other directors will. JJ pushing hard on practical effects and taking notes from the OT was a big factor in this new movie.

The lightsaber fight wasn't bland. Poe taking out stormtroopers on the ground in his X-Wing wasn't bland. The opening battle with stormtroopers piling out of the carriers wasn't bland.

salsa pickin #something:

Greg Grunberg. Being a Resistance pilot at that.

nah man. fuck that. I get your bit JJ but it took me completely out of it.

This kind of thing is going to happen to everyone, honestly.

I just finished watching The Last Kingdom and this guy showing up as a bounty hunter or whatever totally took me out of that scene:

I'm sure the other relatively unknown actors had a similar effect on people who knew their past works.

Anecdotal as all hell. Some people enjoyed that and still do, but some were complaining about it back then too.

I distinctly remember only hearing roars of laughter from my audience, no cheers or applause.

EDIT: And no, for the love of Christ, If time travel bullshit is brought into Star Wars I'm swearing off the franchise forever.

Jurassic Park is a big movie franchise too, and a lot of people hated Jurassic World when it first came out too! Like I went into this movie wanting to hate it and I was blown away by how good it was.

Here is why it is false. How long do I wait? If I say I love this movie in 2 years do people come back with "oh wait another 2 years it will suck!".

So in 5 years I say I love this movie, then they say wait another 5. How long am I waiting? What am I waiting for? What is this magic deadline when I will wake up and say I don't like it anymore?

Do you see why I find this argument is super fucking annoying? People have torn apart and argued the prequels since they came out. People seem to forget this. Time has not made people in general hate on the original trilogy.

I don't see this annoying argument made for other well received movies. For some reason we are all blind fan boys who take whatever shit is shoveled to them despite the fact that we have evidence that the fan base will go over every movie scene by scene for all time. If anything Star Wars fans are super critical, not the other way around.

End rant. :)

Give it up man.

Your being an asshole if you think anyone that likes this movie is "brainwashed" I remember sitting in the theater for AOTC and being utterly destroyed at how bad the PT was.

This movie is the complete opposite, I have seen it twice and it's amazing.

Eh, i mean.... you mention some ok scenes. Nothing more. The suspense was lacking throughout.

Give it up man.

I'm sorry you feel that i'm being an asshole. I walked in hoping people weren't being sold by executives at Disney and hundreds of millions worth of marketing dollars.

unfortunately, no. i got sold.

Why stop there? What of Snoke is Sheev's father, who had twins, and that other twin's name? Shmi Skywalker. Snoke, Sheev, Shmi. Follow the S. It all becomes clear.
