[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Can't wait for episode VIII. Looking forward to the inevitable "I am your Father" moment between Luke and Rey.

One great thing TFA really nailed was the characters, the were great. I actually care and want to know more about them and what happens next, especially with Rey.

Things like:

How did Rey know she could pull off the Jedi mind trick on the stormtrooper?

Why was Kylo bothered by the mention of a girl on Jakku (Rey) when he was told BB-8 and Finn got away?

She nailed the force pull on the lightsaber, beating Kylo and then proceeded to best him in the fight too (sure his injury didn't help)

Was it all a fluke though or has she had training as a young girl but then got mind wiped to protect / hide her and now she's starting to regaining little bits subconsciously.

One theory anyway.
Totally forgot to mention this. His initial reaction about hearing about "a girl" is pretty telling that Rey is somehow tied to bigger things. Pure speculation, but I think Rey is a big reason Kylo turned to the dark side.

I have a strange feeling that Trevorrow is gonna do that ridiculous "pull a Star Destroyer down" thing from Force Unleashed

So the Resistance needs something major to battle against in the movies. The main characters have the Jedi vs Sith. Whether it is Episode 8 or Episode 9. They are going to need a major battle again to give the other characters something to do. This is why Return of the Jedi had another Death Star. But, we are all tired of seeing Death Stars. So what should they do?

My idea is basically a reverse Hoth scenario. The Resistance straight up charging and bringing everything they have against The First Order's main headquarters. Other than that I have nothing.
I can a massive invasion scenario happening on maybe the Republic's stand-in capital. Straight out urban warfare.

they are going to chase down Kylo Ren and the big bad

the battlecruiser thing is still out there

I understand. Yeah, the cinematography was not quite good. However I liked how agressive it was.

I really like ALL the styles of lightsaber duels in the entire franchise.

I love the fancy, elegant duels of the prequels because it show a more stylized use of the lightsaber proper of people who are highly trained in them, barely making any false or erroneous movements and most of the time keeping their cool.

I love the more crude and slow duels of the OT because it fits with the untrained, emotional Luke going against Vader, and Vader's own robotic body not being as agile. I loved the agression, the doubt, the "I'll just try to hit you as hard as I can".

I love the duel in Episode VII. It fits the characters perfectly. Kylo's movements are brutal. Most of the time he swings around his saber the hardest he possibly can. He is in to inflict the most pain instead of just cutting like in the prequels.

There are only two lightsaber duels I don't like in the entire franchise: Old Obi VS Vader, and Anakin VS Dooku in Episode II. All the rest I absolutely ADORE.

I'm actually very happy with how the duel in Episode VII turned out. It surpassed my expectations. I was too afraid they would try to imitate the OT style too much, but it has it's own identity. Not too slow. Not too fancy. A very nice middle ground with agression, desperation and cruelty.

Agree! I love all the lightsaber duels as well as they fit the characters in the era they are in. People who hated the prequel fights are probably in luck as we might not see that style ever again, as it wouldn't fit story wise. Those Jedi techniques and fighting styles were lost with Order 66 and the remaining Jedi purge.

salsa pickin #something:

Greg Grunberg. Being a Resistance pilot at that.

nah man. fuck that. I get your bit JJ but it took me completely out of it.

My favorite scene was Rey's flashback when she discovers the lightsaber. It has so many layers to it, with so much room for interpretation still, while revealing more about Rey in the process. Daisy Ridley also acts the hell out of that scene. Then Maz ruins it lol.
Yeah, Maz kind of sucks. All of her dialogue seemed to be closer to the prequel era. At least she didn't have a 50's diner.

it might also very well be that Kylo, being an insecure semi-evil shithead, is also kind of a sexist.

The Starkiller went out like an afterthought. I think it was only in VII to get it out of the way. The new trilogy its Death Star moment, it's done. Maybe all for a subset of fans that would've complaied about the lack of a big bad weapon or large scale destruction like in the original trilogy. I think it's all behind us.

Your first few questions have been answered already. The film's visual dictionary and the novel, Aftermath, have gone into a bit of detail. Most of which you can read here.

Not including this information in the movie was probably for the best.

You think you want it, but then you start reading and your eyes kinda start to glaze over...

Just kidding, but yeah. :P It would have felt forced. All the characters already know this stuff, so there's no reason for them to talk about it in a way that would explain it to the audience.

Or maybe Han could have Alzheimer's, so Leia would have to like "Han, you remember the New Republic? How the senate is currently in the Hosnian system, and... stuff? Han, are you listening?"

I think the whole rey - kylo ren fight is what the whole trilogy is going to be about. If rey is Luke's daughter (how is she not? All Skywalkers come from desert planets and Luke putting her there when it went into hidding) its two cousins fighting over the balance of the force in the universe. I think kylo might have some hint about this.

Btw what planet did they blow up? That wasn't corrisant was it?

There was some old storyboard scene of a force user throwing rocks at X-wings/tie fighters (can't remember). Personally, I would love to see some force users really wreck shit during a huge space battle.

Yes. Ever since playing the Force Unleashed, I've been wanting to see a force user do something as epic as stop a cruiser with the force on the big screen.

Rey knows how to fight, it is shown at the beginning of the movie.
Rey knows how to fly a ship, it is stated by her and then proved at the beginning of the movie.
Rey knows as much mechanics as Han. She also knows the insides of ships she scavenges of, in order to be able to eat.
Rey can counter Kylo's mind tricks, shown in the interrogatory between the two.
Rey can mind/force steal the lightsaber from under Kylo's nose.

Get over it.

The fact that she manage to fight for her life and to out-power a very unstable and wounded Kylo in the final fight is almost nothing compared to all of the above.

Don't worry, Kylo will get his revenge in the next episode. He needs a lot of sacrifices to complete his transformation.

Yeah! And as you said, the way the lightsaber duels reflected each era of the Star Wars timeline and the level of training of their users was a very nice touch.

I really like Max Landis.

regardless of his dumb ego sometimes overshadowing him into making some really dumb broad statements and acting surprised at the obvious internet backlash

I really like his take on superhero stuff and if anything I like him for putting more of a face to screenwriting

he's kind of a dumbass but I admire the fact that he seems to work hard and care

Letting Bioware and Obisidian remake KOTOR I and II but with oversight by Disney to satisfy their new canon would also be a good choice too. The time has come. We are ready for the return of the greatest games of our time.

Agreed.

Cast of unknowns plus old favourites, all of a sudden 'fuckin Alias guy'.

Simon Pegg had the decency to be buried under alien makeup.

Regarding the complaint about the Resistance somehow getting the Starkiller schematics magically, I noticed watching it again that they talk about a reconnaissance mission coming back. Granted, it seems odd that their scans would reveal the inner structure, but it isn't completely out of nowhere.

I kind of expect/hope to see Luke do this. It would be an awesome juxtaposition to when he couldn't even lift his X-Wing out of the swamp.

I was think about how Rey and Kylo were connected when they were younger. Maybe they trained together under Luke as kids but Rey was always besting Kylo and was jealous of this as she had more potential. This caused him to turn to the dark side for more power and this is how Snoke seduced him. So he destroys Lukes' Jedi order. Luke saves Rey from getting killed hides her and himself as well so that Kylo and Snoke could not locate her.

Not sure if this has been theorized but that's my take on it.

BB-H8te me if old. Beep boop.

I wish I could. I really do.

This really how I feel especially the fact that he can be suuuuuuuper full of himself.

That said, he can be pretty funny sometimes and he's very passionate that's for sure. He can even make some great points at times too. Though, the Mary Sue one doesn't really stick for me at all.

I didn't even notice. I think all the cameos work really well because they're not bent on showing faces and when they do, they don't linger on them.

Like, it's funny most people will go the rest of their lives not knowing the stormtrooper that got mind tricked is 007.

People talk about Kylo being wounded like he was clipped in the shoulder. Dude was shot in the stomach by a gun that sent people flying 10 feet backwards earlier in the movie. He wasn't just wounded, he was dying.

I really liked her character, the most interesting of the new characters outside of the core three. And it was nice to have someone who has a broader perspective on the current conflict; she's seen some shit in her time.

Just took my younger daughter to see it. She'd seen ANH and Empire a few years ago, and so was kinda familiar with them. Some initial confusion about the sides on the conflict aside, she loved it. It's been fun to watch these with my family who are not as big a fan of Star Wars as I, and find it works for them really well. They don't get all the references and history with the characters, but totally got sucked into the story and characters. The credits rolled and Bridget turns to my wife and I, "I hate cliffhangers!" She just wanted it to keep going. Pretty good sign for the future of the series.

Yup. It's all right there.

I think I'd like a new series set between 6 and 7 personally. Less Jedi Council and Sith Lords and robots and racist Asian fish people and all that.

I did end up going to the bathroom during one of her scenes, maybe I'll like her more on a rewatch! And that's a cute story.

No it wasn't Corruscant. "Hosnian Prime". New Republic set a new capital.

Am i the only one who makes two parallels during this movie?

First; Middle Ages legends with Excalibur (Anakin lightsaber) who chose Rey to Kylo (Ren is not his name! It's his title like Darth for the sith) . The first "order" like the templars and of course Kylo's lightsaber .

Second: ...well looks like this trilogy will be Avatar the last airbender right?

Saw this film in 4DX. The experience was worth it. While there were times that I got annoyed by it and simply wanted to watch the movie, other times my jaw hit the floor with how much it added to the experience. I would recommend watching the film with 4DX is available.

Anyway my thoughts on the film:
  • The film was good. Not great, but good. It was a satisfying film which is more than I can say with anything from the prequel trilogy. However, I still continue to insist that the Star Wars franchise is over-rated. This film does not deserve to be the highest grossing film ever.
  • The leads, Rey and Fin, are really good. They standout and are far more memorable characters than Luke and Han or Anakin and Padme
  • I loved how the film had the balls to kill Han. However, I wonder if this was less of an artistic choice or more of a choice of the studio being nervous that Ford wouldn't sign up for the next two films
  • Han's son being the main villian was good and his actual character was interesting. However, the character design is very generic and nowhere near as iconic as Darth Vader or Darth Maul
  • How the hell does the First Order have the funds to construct a ship ten times bigger than the Death Star?
  • Is the First Order suppose to be significantly stronger than the Empire or weaker? I assumed the latter but still am not sure
  • Am I suppose to believe that Rei, with no training, can defeat Han's son, who had tons of training, in a lightsaber fight because of "the Force"?

He didn't.

People talk about Kylo being wounded like he was clipped in the shoulder. Dude was shot in the stomach by a gun that sent people flying 10 feet backwards earlier in the movie. He wasn't just wounded, he was dying.

And he was clipped in the shoulder by Finn with a lightsaber to boot.

Dude was fucked up and held his own for a while.

I have heard Mary Sue used, not even just for Rey, more than ever before in the last 48 hours. People learned a new term.

This is why I feel like everyone who watched that particular Max Landis spread it like wildfire.

I mean, the argument isn't entirely invalidated at all, but god, can it get repetitive.
