[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

One out of many things that I loved about this movie were the lightsaber fights. No fancy shit (at least not blatant) but just brutal. Every swing you can feel the intent to kill. And watching this in IMAX you can feel the bass and thud with every strike. I don't believe lightsaber strikes have ever sounded and "felt" so strong.

I said the same. I loved the brutality and rawness of it. It makes perfect sense as they haven't been trained yet :)

So many people in here sapping the fun out of every movie. Some of these nitpicky posts honestly make me sad and wonder whether you're even capable of enjoying anything. I read the same thing on the Gaming side, game after game, movie after movie, hyped and then nitpicked to be garbage.

The Force Awakens was exactly what it needed to be, fantastic new characters mixed with the old in order to establish the new trilogy. Original enough to stand firmly on its own, while reverent enough to the source material to reestablish a damaged franchise. A true Star Wars film, and a proper return 30 years since the original trilogy ended.

Great post.

The Force Awakens is a flawed movie, make no mistake. Pretty flawed, I'll admit. But at its core it's an enjoyable, classic Star Wars experience that I thought more fans of the OT would nonetheless like, especially following the disappointing prequels. It was a breath of fresh air for the Star Wars franchise that it desperately needed.

I'll definitely be expecting an improvement from Episode VIII but for the start of a new trilogy, The Force Awakens works really well IMO.

Haha. Yup. I am learning that the more I avoid post-release GAF the better I enjoy games and films. Have fun with the hype, watch or play, and go on the next hung to be excited about. I think this will be my new pattern. I enjoy reviews and critiques, but not in the degree that these kinds of thread provide, as they devolve from critiquing into ridiculously meticulous nitpicking.

yeah i agree =).
but be prepared.

Zelda WiiU will be destroyed by Neogaf, like they destroy each assassin's creed since AC2 because it's not "ac2" , we all know it.

Btw , zelda had the same pattern: if zelda is so different from OOT it's bad (skyward sword) , but if the game is too close (TP) it's too very bad =/

Fans don't know what they want, but i know: they want to bring back to the OOT time or the first star wars movie....

I will forever think Maz's base is in the same system as Hosnian Prime because you can see the planets breaking up in the background after the Starkiller shot.

Yeah which made me think "damn the order is stupid for blowing up the wrong planet".

JJ did the same in Star Trek. I think he doesn't understand how space works.

The Starkiller aspect is halfbaked on all sides. Starkiller blows up a bunh of planets designed specifically for Starkiller to blow up. They didn't even have the balls to destroy Coruscant but some faux Coruscant.

How they figure out the weakness on Starkiller is brushed aside and the actual assault by the X-Wings is more an afternote than anything else.

Just like the last time JJ Abrams blew up a fan-favorite sci-fi planet, where he was lauded left and right for his incredible balls.

Oh for god's sake, Finn isn't Jar Jar. He's J from Men in Black. He's an audience stand in *and* protagonist, and he covers up his insecurity with bravado and humor.
Yeah I can see that. Especially with him getting wrapped up by the tentacle monster in the movie. But I still stand by my original statement.

Also since you bring up 3PO. Finn is also a stand in for him as well, with BB 8 being the R2 stand in for the Jakku scenes.

I'll say it again. People can't relate to Finn because of his color. I have spent 25 years relating to heroes of a different color. Sometimes we are still in

Pablo Hidalgo shed some light on this. From his Twitter:

5. Some weird-ass hyperspace-rip seen-across-the-cosmos kinda shit.

So they're not watching the planets be destroyed, just the impact.

People still arguing that Rey isn't a Mary Sue? She is like the most Mary Sue ass Mary Sue I can even remember seeing.

She's just a capable young woman who's learned a lot from living on a rough desert planet on her own for years. There aren't a lot of capable young women in film so I suppose I understand where all of these Mary Sue comments are coming from.

seriously?

Its stuff worth pointing out because its whats keeping this really good movie from being an amazing movie, and worst of all, it's material that seems to actually have been written and considered, but cut out of the film in order to keep the running time short, as if that really means anything when the two highest grossing films of all time are 3 hours long.

She's hawt what you expect hahahaha

well no.
She's pretty but not "hot". But she's really pretty.

They opted to go with the movie length that Star Wars typically runs. They'll get all the die hards to come back to the theater with the 3 hour cut, mark it.

But yet these die hards are left disappointed again because they expected something completely new. I knew going in it would be a rehash they had to bring new fans in to have the same experience kids did seeing the original and old fans with all the nostalgia it had.

I used to take this approach, but they I realized I enjoy reading folks who just come apart at the smallest things...and I laugh.

Sure, there is a place for constructive criticism and different of opinion, but damn...is there not also a place to sit back and just enjoy the ride?

Life is so much more fun that way. :D

I get cutting stuff for pacing reasons, but cutting it just to be around 2 hours is kind of silly. If things are paced just as well, I hope the release an extended version.

IMO the series heading to Rey and Kylo eventually taking down Plagueis. I think thats where it ends, but I wonder if Plagueis is going to be there until Episode 12? Long time from now if that is the case.

You know Disney will first release a bare-bones verison of the movies, then extended.

What? I'm a white male and had no problems relating to him. I never even thought about his colour, why would I? He's just a cool character played brilliantly by a talented actor. I don't understand your post/point.

This is a pretty awful post. About as cliched as it gets too, clockwork in every movie with a strong following

Did you seriously just drop the "how can you monsters enjoy anything" card just because of some criticism? I agree nitpicks sometimes get carried away but there are plenty of valid arguments being made as well.

Why couldn't finn have his normal accent? Rey has a british accent or at least seems to keep much of it. Finn's voice was so weird when he first started talking since I had seen attack the block

Really?
I really dislike the term "nitpick" it just feels so disingenuous when lobbied at people. Not everyone is going enjoy something the way you enjoy it and not say anything negative about it. That doesn't mean they "hate fun" or anything.

He said on The Graham Norton Show that it would have been weird if all these Stormtroopers speak with an accent and he comes out with an English one, IIRC. He definitely addressed it on the show but I cannot remember 100% what he said.

This movie has a lot of problems with it. Calling them out is a good thing.

It's still a pretty good movie, though. I don't know that I'd stick it in my top 10 of the year. Maybe at the bottom (I still have a LOT to see before I feel comfy making that list), but there's way more to like than dislike, though. It's just for a lot of people, it's more interesting to dig into why the movie is flawed, and how those flaws came to be, than it is to go over the really good bits in depth to determine why they're good.

a lot of it is nitpicking because the criticism can be leveled at pretty much any fiction (suspension of disbelieve, time constraints). Its like people have never seen a movie or read a book before
