[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Maybe it was the Force that gave sure such good piloting skills.

Isn't that obvious? That's what lets her navigate the downed Star Destroyer and do a crazy move to let Finn take out the last TIE. That's also why Luke can bullseye critters on Tatooine and why Anakin is the only human capable of piloting a podracer. Their latent force abilities makes them capable of above normal feats even before they are aware they can utilize the force.

My wishlist for Episode 8 is really only to see Luke wrecking baddies with his green lightsaber as the most powerful Jedi. Beyond that, I trust Abrams and Johnson to deliver.

I should explain a little bit more, since it was me that claimed she could be a "1,000 year old girl."

Basically, I'm arguing that somehow her emergence of power is linked with secrets discovered inside the Jedi Temples.

If Snoke = ancient evil, the Rey is potentially an ancient foil to his power.

Temple Secrets = A link to Rey's background = Power against Snoke

This is why Luke is looking for the first Jedi Temple.

To what extent she is "ancient" I don't know. I just think somehow there's a connection.

I kind of wish Abrams would just come out and spell it out for the knit wits that don't get it at this point

but then responding to the backlash implies that their opinion was valid in the first place.

Which makes it seem much more like a Luke decision, not a Han & Leia decision, right? That's how Luke thinks/operates. Not Han & Leia.

Yes, but this doesn't automatically make her Luke's kid; it just means Luke was the guiding force behind what ultimately happened to Rey.

You have to really want her to be Han & Leia's kid to even pursue it after having watched the movie. It made some sense before the film came out, using the thin context provided by the spoilers, but with the full film now out there and digestable, it just doesn't fit.

I do think it's ultimately more likely that she's Luke's kid, given Maz's comment that the reunion she seeks is ahead of her (after having already met Han).

But I don't know that there's any unambiguous sign that she's not Han and Leia's kid (Han and Leia would still be family even if she's Luke's kid, so she'd actually have already reunited with family by that point anyway). On my first viewing, I definitely got a strong impression that she's Luke's. But after a second viewing, I decided nothing definitely ruled out her being Han and Leia's, and them just keeping a lid on it (if she's Luke's, they're keeping a lid on it anyway). They were after all quite insistent on shoving her similarities to Han in our face in the first act, which seems kind of silly if it's a bait-and-switch.

If she was ancient why would she be 5 years old when left alone on Jakku? Is it a frozen force baby like Brendan Fraser in Encino Man?

Sounds like your nephew is more grown up than some other people, who over analyse things.
He's awesome. My favorite (whispered :P) comments of his were:

1) "Rey is so awesome" when Han is pointing out to Finn that she's out the window climbing around the inside of the Starkiller, like she'd already gotten free and is working on her way out even without knowing the two of them are there. I think she's just a home run likable heroine for kids, regardless of the social implications of her being female in the first place.
2) He just goes, "reference!" when Han Solo mentions the trash compactor. It's like was able to see all the winks and nods and callbacks like we do, just without any of the cynicism, just sitting there enjoying the magic of watching a fun movie.

It was an awesome experience seeing it with him for the first time :)

It only started bothering him after Rey whispered the force. He just totally gave up after that to let Rey have her Van Damme moment.
He still was very wounded and distressed before hand tho. Just based on the way he says "We're not done yet" while super sweaty followed by a shot of blood dripping.

Kylo sabre also sucks. Those hilt Guard things look like they get in the way constantly.
Quite the opposite, when he started stabbing Finn's shoulder.....

What are you on about man? He doesn't have to spell out anything that's what the future movies are for. If room for ambiguity is left it is perfectly valid for people to interpret it different ways.

According to my other friend John Boyega was a terrible actor lol I told him he was on crack

I think the Finn character needed more to him, but Boyega was definitely great in the role. The movie had pretty good acting overall, which is a first for a Star Wars movie.

And my guess is that Rey is Luke's kid, or someone he was training when the shit went down.

I guess I'm just getting tired of the same old criticisms and people unwilling to realize what you just said: there are two more movies to explain things.

and it's fine to interpret and speculate on things. but to out and out trash the movie because things weren't spelled out ito their liking is unproductive and frustrating.

I have a writeup with a crazy theory about this.

She was discovered by Luke and his academy - essentially she's a vault dweller. She showed great potential. Snoke moved in using Kylo's jealousy and the Knights of Ren to try to capture her. Luke defends her, but is fearful of the potential this baby holds. He hides her on Jakku UNTIL her can find out what this ancient baby was intended for and how/if she is to be channeled.

Her memories of abandonment are true, but her parents are long dead. Luke will adopt her as his daughter eventually. But she is not a OG Skywalker.

Or something like that. It's just a theory. I'm trying to imagine some more fun twist that just, "She's Lukes." Which doesn't explain why he would abandon her. My theory means Luke was less attached to her than he was the mastery that surrounds her - at least currently.

They could have had the scene with both parties of smugglers as they did, to show Han's charm to talk his way out of anything remained intact. That part was fine. The CG monster chase that followed? Stop it.

This scene was fucking awesome. This was Han doing Han shit. We have never been able to see that before (except briefly in the Cantina where Han shot that dirty Greedo first).

My kids were legit scared shitless throughout the sequence. Actually, just watching them laugh, cheer, get scared, and my one boy even got choked at Han...really brought me back to my first experiences with Star Wars.

I like the idea of Ben arguing with Master Luke about how he understands Vader more than anyone.

And Luke being like "I was fucking there, dude."

I kind of want my New Jedi Academy animated series.
Rebels is pretty terrible especially in comparison to the other shows so yes this would be a great alternative. Preferably with a blank check like the clone wars show. Each episode of clone wars cost at least $1 million each
It'll never happen but I can dream...

im just upset the guys from the raid were on screen for like 3 minutes and did nothing of importance.

like what the fuck did they cast them for?

the only explanation is that they show up in rouge one some how.

I will NEVER understand the hate around assassin's creed (future movie or games).
NEVER. =(

I like Assassin's Creed but we've been over saturated. I couldn't get through Syndicate, which was a good game, because I was tired of the formula. Let it sleep for a few years.

it's going to be great to see them fill in the 30 year gap

I want to know more about this Lor San Tekka guy. Sucks he got taken out so early in the film.

Why don't people like the Rathtars sequence? Every SW movie has had a monster scene

ANH - Trash compactor
ESB - Mynocks and Space Worm
ROTJ - Rancor, Sarlaac

I thought it was a lot of fun.

hell yeah!

This sounds dumb as I read it over, but I really think my understanding of what makes this a good movie was enhanced by seeing it with a kid right next to me, lol.

While an interesting theory Snoke isn't bothered in the slightest by Luke looking for/eventually finding the first Jedi Temple. Snoke doesn't even want to kill Luke. It's Kylo that absolutely wants to find Luke but Snoke even ordered BB-8 to be destroyed if the droid couldn't be recovered.

I don't want to get too preachy here but at some point you have to live with the fact people's brains are wired different than yours and not let it bother you.

maybe but the formula will never change even if syndicate come in 2016 or 2017...
I'm sure that syndicate would have better critics in this forum if he came out in novembre 2016, but with NO CHANGE, juste because of the gap....

Only if they do the right thing and half Mark Hamill, prestigious voice actor that he is, voice Luke. I mean, it would be insane not to, but I just wanna make that clear in this hypothetical situation: no Hamill, no watch.

The one thing that makes me doubt that Luke is Rey's father is this exchange:

Maz: “Dear child, I see your eyes. You already know the truth. Whoever you’re waiting for on Jakku… they’re never coming back. But there’s someone who still could.”
Rey: “Luke.”

I was under the assumption that Luke himself abandoned her on Jakku, but maybe someone else did.

Where do you get that Snoke wasn't bothered? What do you think Snoke actually wants if not Luke/Rey?

Yeah that scene with the smugglers and the creatures chasing them around the ship was the worst part of the movie and felt exactly like the monster scene in ST2009 when Kirk was marooned. Both were equally unnecessary/pointless.

It was the only part of the movie where I felt like I was safe running out for a bathroom break. :lol

Hmm, this never actually occurred to me before.

i don't want rey to be Luke child, it will be so boriiiing :(

Her having intimate knowledge of the Falcon does go in line with her having intimate knowledge about everything. Y'all are correct.

*tires screech*

You can't backpedal to an over-arching mary sue argument, trite as it is, when the pillars are being knocked away.
