I really really enjoyed the movie, and I love Rey (and daisy Ridleys performance).

That said, since everyone was talking about Mary Sues, I read through the tvtropes article describing the characteristics and I certainly do get that impression about Rey's depiction in the movie.

That said, I don't care. I'm fine to just think she's an awesome and awesomely skilled person. :)

This film gives the impression that First Order troopers are better trained than the Empire's. FN-B4D455 beating Finn with his baton, their assault on the Jakku village at the start etc.
 
If Rey ends up being Luke's child, kudos on the casting for the trio of Portman/Knightley/Ridley for looking like they could all be related.

The shield controls were in the middle of this platform that you had to sidle around in fear of falling. Yes, movies especially ones like this are going to be full of conveniences and even contrivances. It doesn't have to be that way but if I'm giving it a free pass it's simply because I don't give a shit as it's not something I would even think about without reading nitpick posts.

Those posts are fine (well, some), it's just not how I choose to watch or analyze movies. I'm thinking about the story and a bunch of other things than to care about whether or not it's stupid for Kylo to have one guard stationed to watch over Rey, probably not thinking she knows how to mind trick.

Aside from the fact she's left there at 5-6 years old, and you'd have an entire Resistance/Republic who would have to suddenly forget Han & Leia ever had another daughter along with Ben, you have Leia in the movie pleading with Han to bring their boy back home. If, after everything he's done, she still thinks Ben can be turned back to the light, if she still believes in his potential redemption, why the hell would she have Luke mindwipe and hide her other child? Not only would that be contradictory to her belief that sending Ben away was the bad call, but it contradicts the basic sentiment she's expressing in the movie.

Besides which, neither Han or Leia acts at all like they know her. And not in a "we have to hide that you're our daughter." Look at how Han gives ZERO SHITS about Ben taking her on his shuttle. Finn is tripping out about it, and Han waves him off. Why? Because what's important to him isn't that the girl got kidnapped, it's that his boy is doing the kidnapping.

It makes no sense in the Star Wars universe that the empire would have survived like it has in TFA.

Why are the rebels still called the resistance? They won and a new republic was founded, the emperor and Vader were dead along with most of the empire officers. If this is the route they are going they need to explain those 30 years or whatever it is better.

Damn, if only the movie came with some sort of written introduction that laid out all you need to know.


The Rebels founded a New Republic. The Resistance is a movement within the Republic that sprung up to fight the First Order. No one knows what exactly the Knights of Ren are.

This information brought you by: The Force Awakens, and absolutely none of the EU material which I haven't read anyway.
 
I believe that Rey is Luke's daughter. I think that when the Jedi temple/ acadamy was being killed off by Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren, that yoda looking lady from the new movie was tasked with hiding her from Kylo as they know that if Kylo knew of her then he would hunt her down.

I think that Episode 8 will show a bit more back story about her, Luke and Luke's baby mama (maybe Mara Jade???)

Either way, she finding the saber was meant to be and I think Han knew it... so he took her there to that lady. Her giving Luke the saber at the end of the movie was him knwoing that his saber was being returned by his daughter...

He will train her but have to save her in Episode 8 as Kylo Ren will be much stronger. I also think the Knights of Ren will have a much bigger part as the next movie will probably be a bit darker.
 
I feel like anyone criticizing the movie at this point is just intentionally ignorant.

there are plenty of explanations why this movie works.

Nobody said they would totally lose after the 2nd Death Star blew up.

Think of it as the Republic CIA only less subtle

And Kylo wren come the fuck on, when he takes that mask off he became abit of a joke, voice was cool with it on though. Has skywalker force power and years of training, but manages to get hurt by a tiny storm trooper who has never used a sabre before. Then gets beat by someone who has never used a sabre before to.

He just killed his own dad which made him emotionally unstable AND got shot by Chewie's really strong crossbow. Also, even if Rey had never used a lightsaber before, she's shown to be a very competent melee fighter and also has 15 years of isolated survivalist training to back that up.

On another note regarding Rey. It does kinda seem like Han has an idea on who she is. Not saying she's his kid but he gives her some strange looks during the movie.

Also at the end when Chewie and her are on the Falcon. The camera looks right at Chewie and he's giving her this look as well. Like he knows who Luke is in relation to her.

Also Maz drops hints when she tells Rey that whoever she's waiting on won't be coming back. But then says something on the lines of there is one whom you seek. and Rey says "Luke"

This theory is Dead on Arrival.
 
After a repeat viewing I still found it hard to tell how much damage Ren was taking during the lightsaber fight. It looked like the 2 obvious hits are the face slash and an upper chest scrape but he got hit at least 4-5 times I thought.

Again, I am a fan. But if you can move something with the mass of the Death Star at FTL speeds to get to other systems, then you can much more easily find a large mass (say, an asteroid) and just drop it on the planet you want to wipe out. You can manage an extinction-level event with less effort.

Star Wars is fantasy though, not science fiction. It's all good. but it's not something that handles scrutiny.

You want to get rally scary, if you can just to FTL *and stay there* and hit a planet, you don't even need anything that large.

For visual and thematic reasons, Big Planet of Doom works pretty well though.

She was flying the Falcon better than we had ever seen Han fly within minutes of getting into it, without a co-pilot. She lined up a shot for the stuck canon without even knowing where the canons relative position to herself was in the ship. Minutes. Saved them from the Tie Fighters.

She then repaired and modded the ship better than Han or Chewie or Lando ever had directly after that, saving the ship from blowing up.

So who will the Falcon crew be? Chewie, Rey, Finn, R2D2, C3P0, BB-8 and Poe? Or will Poe and BB-8 do thier own thing?

I jsut see Rey being like Luke and being in the Falcon from time to time but also doing her own thing as well while the rest of the team is in the Falcon.
 
The thing I really want to know is who the fuck is Snoke. If he is tempting Ben as a young child that means he's already a powerful force user at the time of the OT. So who is this person? Basically Jorus C'baoth?

I took those glances as something completely different. "Who is this girl?!" That's basically how I saw their early relationship. She was a great pilot and also knew a thing or two about how the Falcon should work, which took Han by surprise because, at her age, she really hasn't seen another transport ship like it. As the movie went on, I felt that he started to have mutual father-like feelings towards her, which is why he offered her a job. I think this is especially important because he had a void to fill after Ben joined the Knights of Ren and lost his way to the darkside. Rey was starting to fill that void.

I'm a firm believer that Rey & Han aren't father and daughter. I'm still on the fence about her being related to Luke, but my hopes are that she's something completely different.

That reminds me, the editing during the fights were poor.
 
I can totally see Rey being a Skywaler, but in a totally different way. Maybe Luke "adopts" her by Episode IX and gives her that surname.
 
My bat shit insane, probably not true, theory still includes a mind wipe for Rey.

The way she puts on that blast helmet when she's done eating. She's yearning for something that she doesn't quite remember but it is instinctual for her.

A few comments:

- It's not necessarily the case that anyone we encounter in the film would have known Han and Leia had another kid apart from Han and Leia and probably Luke.
- Han definitely knows her, which is why Maz's query of "who's the girl?" is answered off-screen.
- Literally the first interaction between Rey and Leia is a tender and definitely motherly hug, no words exchanged. Han clearly talked about Rey with Leia off-screen, otherwise I think it would have been Chewie instead of Rey who confirmed her own grief.
- Obviously the foremost concern for Han would have been Kylo, since Kylo's absence has been torturing him for all those years. But there's a reason he's specifically familiar with the particular region of Jakku where Rey is from, and likewise probably a reason why he/Chewie avoided searching that region for the Falcon.
 
I just watched this last night although the biggest moment was spoiled for me. Fuck you internet. You all know what part I'm talking about. Anyway, not too pleased with the movie overall. My problems were:

1. It seemed far too familiar. Basically the exact same story line as A New Hope There's someone out there with latent powers who doesn't know their real family. They leave their home planet to fight the empire/first order and it ends with the big space station that can destroy stuff being destroyed by the resistance/rebels.

2. Why does R2D2 have a nearly complete map to Luke's location? I felt like that wasn't explained properly. If he did, why did he go to sleep rather than trying to complete the map to find his master?

3. Why is Rey so over powered? She can already control the force and basically destroys Kylo. Imagine Luke destroying Darth Vader in the very first movie? How can your villain be intimidating when he's completely outclassed by a novice?

4. With Rey being so OP, what can Luke really teach her?

The rest of the movie was good. Wasn't too pleased with Finn's contribution. I hope it turns out that he can control the force to or something like that.

Also, are we all subscribing to theory that Rey is Luke's daughter? Seems too convenient not to be lol.
 
The whole smugglers on Han's ship set-piece was a bit unnecessary. It felt like they really wanted a section where Han interacts with smugglers cuz that's what Han does and this movie wants to hit as many Star Wars moments as it can jam in there.

Finally saw the movie last night and it was pretty tood, but it bugged me how they drained he sun but everyone on thhat planet didnt just instantly freeze and die...
