Am I the only one that understand the "call back" to the revelation "i'm your father" from ESB during SW7?

At one point, during Han/Kylo exchange, Han said "YOU'RE MY SON"

No he didn't. The exchange goes like this:

Han: "Take off that mask. You don't need it."
Kylo: "What do you think you'll see if I do?"
Han: "The face of my son."

You do know that's not in the movie, right?

Doesn't matter. Most of that stuff is implied. It's no shock she understands droid speak. Not to mention it's not hard to assume she knows her shit regarding ships. She's been scavenging Star Destroyer parts. She's clearly resourceful.

Sure it may be could have been conveyed better but everything is right there to some capacity.

Anakin and Luke barely had the thing. Obi-Wan had it for 20 years and who knows who had it for 35 years after it fell down a bottomless pit with Luke's hand.

Feel like not enough is made of how long Obi-wan had it. Not that there needs to be, but it's groundwork for the future, possibly.

My wishlist for Episode 8 is really only to see Luke wrecking baddies with his green lightsaber as the most powerful Jedi. Beyond that, I trust Abrams and Johnson to deliver.

You must've loved seeing Yoda flipping about like a spastic ninja dwarf.

Rey does not have famous parents. Her characters journey in this film is about letting go of the parents who abandoned her and embracing her future as a Jedi. Part of her appeal is that she's no one special (like much of the audience) but she can find greatness within herself. Luke had a similar arc but it was established early on in ANH that he was the son of a great Jedi. As many beats as TFA takes from the OT, I don't think the surprise parentage twist is one they want to repeat. They could have very easily done so with Kylo Ren and wisely chose not to. Kylo represents the Skywalker line and I'm fairly certain that by Episode IX we'll be seeing "Ben Skywalker" toys on store shelves.

Yeah I really don't know. I cite this as a strength of the script, honestly. I feel very confident that she is Luke's daughter and am surprised there is so much debate, and others like you are in the exact opposite corner.

The line immediately preceding the one you're referring to there is:

"That lightsaber was Luke's, and his father's before him. And now it calls to you."

It's just that could easily imply she's simply the next force user (plus it would be weird for Maz to know she's Luke's daughter when she had to ask Han who "that girl" is). The line I quoted explicitly draws a distinction between the ones Rey was waiting for on Jakku (her family) and the "one that still could" (Luke), unless Maz is purposefully being confusing like I said.

I agree though, they have created so much mystery with this movie, which I find funny considering a major complaint is that this was just a retread.

Just got back from second viewing myself.
In total I've paid for 5 tickets to star wars in the past 6 days. Ticket prices are about £10 each.

Ben Solo or Ben Ortega no?

Is it nitpicking if I was expecting the offspring of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher to look a lot less plain than the guy they've chosen to play Kylo Ren?
No, I don't see it as nitpicking. I don't really like to call small complaints "nitpicking" because it shuts down discussion.

Though I like Kylo Ren looking so plain. Part of the point of the character is that he wants to be a Darth Vader-style badass but is really just a poser. And so beneath the mask, he's not a monster or a badass, he's just a dude with some serious emotional issues.

Ben Solo or Ben Ortega no?

Btw, I'm still reading the art book, and I'm now conflicted over ship designs for the First Order.

On one hand, the reskin of classic Empire stuff feels too safe but would make sense in terms of what the Order is.

On the other hand, the fresher designs they had in concept are pretty creative, but don't feel so "Star Wars" half the time. One of the proposed ones is a red Star Destroyer with negative spaces akin to the USS Vengeance in STID

Where do you get that Snoke wasn't bothered? What do you think Snoke actually wants if not Luke/Rey?

My thought on this was, Snoke was more worried the Resistance finding Luke than he was about killing him. There's an exchange with Kylo and Hux where the latter says Snoke (good lord what an awful name) wants the droid captured if possible, destroyed if not. That just blowing it up was on the table meant he was more worried about the Resistance finding Luke than with killing him outright.

Seen posts a few pages back about some US theatres still being sold out... Don't know if that happens often when a movie's been released for more than a week, sure seems crazy to me. Crazy good!

The theater that I'm going to see it in tomorrow:

(greyed out means completely sold out)

Wild stuff.

Tried posting this on mobile earlier but think it failed. Someone linked me the below bit of backstory which I do kind of think should have been explained a *tad* more in the movie:

That said, certainly didn't want the film to be bogged down in politics it didn't need!

people spent 2-3 movies watching luke try to master the force and Rey kinda nails the force in about 30 minutes. Unless there's some sort of backstory that we're not privy to yet, yeah, that stuff kinda rings false right now.

This still doesn't make sense to me. Luke was able to block blaster bolts without seeing and destroyed the Death Star without a targeting computer. I don't see how Rey was sooo much more adept in TFA.

I think it's mostly likely she's adopted. Still his daughter and a Skywalker.

Adoption has the potential to be so powerful in this trilogy.

Snoke: "No one has ever cared about you. They have always abandoned you."

Luke: "The daughter I never had - you are now a Skywalker."

The juxtaposition is too perfect.

I only have a problem with the flight sim stuff. Everything else is fine.

I dont get this not-wanting-rey-to-be-a-skywalker thing. the films have always been about skywalkers. like, literally all of them. there hasn't been one not about a skywalker.

I'm fine with it so long as it's handled well. Rey should be pissed at Luke for him leaving her on Jakku, Luke should feel a mix of relief and also grief over her being okay but also of her pursing the use of the force that will instantly make her a target of the first order and, of course, the shame of not being there for her.

It can be done perfectly fine, in a manner that works. Given the mountain of evidence piling up regarding Rey's link to Luke, y'all are just setting yourselves up for disappointment if you think she isn't a skywalker.

When the first thing she does is a well executed jedi mind trick and then she is doing a force pull for a lightsaber, well, that doesnt seem right when luke could barely move a rock in the beginning of TESB and he had freaking yoda teaching him

What type of theater? Imax?

I'm going back to mine for a 3rd viewing it's your standard theater. Don't expect anything to be sold out but they do have all the times open for it. Just debating on which one to go to.

So... why did Luke never bother training Leia?

THEORY(IES)
You have to be confident to use the Force. She dismisses Luke's assertation that she has the same power he does in ROTJ.

She's too busy with saving the galaxy. When the Republic didn't want to stomp out every remnant of the Empire, she took it upon herself to do so. Why spend time away from that lofty goal when Luke is already trained?

It can give the impression of a dynasty if all the Force is just in the Skywalker family. It'd invite people to attack pre-emptively to prevent another Vader (who was a Skywalker)

She saw how the Dark Side is prominent in her family. She knows she has a temper and wouldn't be suited to a Jedi and would one day succumb to the Dark Side.

etc, etc.

Lots of reasons really.

You'd think Luke would put her in a slightly better situation than all alone to fend for herself.
