Amplitude launches on PS4 Jan 5, 2016

Besides the lack of licensed remixes, the only problem I have is that the PS4 R2 trigger isn't well situated for Amplitude as the PS2 R2 was.

ahhhhhh I also forgot about that tunnel vision you get from looking offscreen after a song.

right in my nostalgia

is controller vibration for this? it's tough going into these songs not getting a feel for the bpm

Oh shit! This is day one for sure! I remember spending so much time on the first two games, I even preordered FreQuency and played the mini game on the website before the game released when I was younger :)

Yeah, slightly feathering R2 has caused quite a few misfires for me. Tapezilla said they are using the below. Going to give it a shot.

Tapezilla: L1 + triangle + circle
Tapezilla: with my right index and middle on triangle and circle
Tapezilla: Left index on L1

The only thing I don't "like" is track seek--it makes keeping your streak less impressive, when you instantly jump three lanes over to the next track, rather than arrowing over with milliseconds to spare.

I'd also like to disable R2.

Also, Concept by Symbion Project is the best song so far!

Ugh, very very jealous. Would have loved to get an early access code.

Trying to stay away from any streams but I appreciate the impressions!

Need this in my life NOW!

Change to right/left dominant, rather than right/left seek under options/controls. It moves seek over to the right stick and leaves move without seek on the dpad/L stick.

Yeah, but then it's harder. :) I prefer the seek after getting used to it, but it tripped me up at first, since I was overshooting some lanes.

Kind of annoyed that there doesn't seem to be a way to go back to a previous song when going for the Campaign trophies. You can only unlock the bonus track if you score well enough the first time through. Otherwise, you have to quit the entire campaign.

Still trying to get my Amplitude groove back, so I'm struggling in the Intermediate difficulty in the middle batch of songs.

Guess I should just stick to Quick Play and practice there, then make a run at the difficulty stuff once I've got it locked down solid.

Otherwise -- LOVING this game.

Lights by Wolfgun is a ton of fun, has a FreQuency vibe. Tracklist is growing on me.

Anyone know what difficulty "S" is? Some crazy unlockable level?

I never had any complaints about the OST, it all sounds great. Just wished it had some of the Frequency/Amplitude composers back or more EDM. There's a ton of amazing artists who I'm sure would've happily given a song or two to be in Amplitude, like Carpenter Brut and such.

S is Super difficulty, I believe you unlock it by completing Campaign on Insane. Basically it's the same charts as Insane, but you don't recover energy, and the only power up available is Multiplier.

I dropped down to Intermediate and it just feels so much better right now. FCing songs now, or at least getting close, but it's giving me the chance to experiment with the different control schemes.

I may end up buying all the DLC for this when more comes out.

I always start on Normal no matter how good I think I am. I have fun before I go to suffer.

Yeah, but I thought I'd test my skills for a few songs. Hitting the notes didn't seem to be am issue, more keeping the note streak up when switching tracks, too used to the looseness of Rock Band Blitz.

Anyway, I've unlocked Impossible now, that's all I wanted. Next step: Getting The Spine into Rock Band 4.

This fucking game, man. I have Harmonix Hands GOOD for the first time in forever, since my TV and my PS2 don't get on when it comes to music games.

Expert Campaign done, a few weak tracks but some absolute belters too. ICU and Energize are so much fun, but the best stuff is in the extra tracks - the Necrodancer tune and the Freezepop one are just insane fun to play. Tagged the next bit in case people want to find out about songs for themselves, but it threw me for a loop.

Crazy Ride is an awful rock song by the folks at Insomniac Games, about Insomniac Games. It namechecks Spyro and Ratchet and Resistance and stuff, then there's a rap in the middle about Sunset Overdrive. It's one of the weirdest things I've ever heard.

But yeah, Amplitude. It's here, it's awesome and these leaderboards will probably be the death of me. Now if I could only work out how to unlock this Super difficulty...

Yo. Late campaign.. I'll use spoilers to be safe. (Don't spoil it for yourself if you plan to play!)

Last track in Limbic System, Dalatecht, on higher difficulties? Needing to maintain 4x with no power ups and then the game decides to throw a fucking acid trip on you in the last third? Good fucking luck, friends!

Good. Fucking. Luck.

If you unlock the bonus song for that region, you have to play THE WHOLE DAMN THING in that messed up view mode. I think I've finally developed an immunity/learned the parts to a degree where I can get through it, but it's absolutely horrible. For the three 4x gates, just start from left, then right, then left. Seems to be the best way to keep a beat going with only (I think) one tricky jump.

i just went throught that .. that's a bold move to do that for the campaign...
So hard on the eyes lol

How is the game visually? I was largely interested in the reboot because of the visuals. I liked the original games, but the concept art looked bonkers.

Did anyone else go into Amplitude blind and have their jaw hit the floor when Slipknot appeared as a boss song?
That was cool, but Fear Factory in Frequency was amazing and super-formative for me. I'm sad that this one seems to be missing something similar (but not that sad).

I would say that the final game does a pretty damn good job of looking like that initial concept art they showed.

Here's a screenshot. Keep in mind all of this is moving by quickly and at 60fps, so it will look much better in motion.

DLC is apparently coming as well, post release. Unlikely that the original full tracklist would be available but would be cool if they put together an 'amplitude pack' with 3 - 6 tracks.

Wish I was playing this now with everyone! I couldn't afford more than $20 at the time. I suppose I don't have the time anyway.... Can't wait for January!

After playing for several hours today exclusively on Expert and Super, I can safely say the following: Fuck the DS4 Triggers.

My right wrist, forearm, and fingers are cramped worse than they ever have been in my entire life. Seriously, SO MUCH PAIN, and this never happened on my DS2 with the original game. I'm going to have to look into alternate ways of controlling Amplitude now, because using L2 or R2 for notes is literally unhealthy.

Has Harmonix said anything anywhere about helping people with codes that don't work? This radio silence is annoying. :| How can they fuck up so badly as to make the (SCEE) codes redeemable only in the UK. -_-

I only had time to play a few songs today but this game is so good. I can't find anything I don't like about it thus far. Everything just feels so smooth. I'm playing on expert and not encountering any difficulty, and I never played Frequency or Amplitude (though I did play RB Unplugged and Blitz, and have tons of experience with various kinds of rhythm games).

Passed the campaign twice on expert difficulty, can't unlock the final bonus song though.. this is going to be a nightmare as I only play on the highest difficulty. Also have another 4 songs to unlock. I'll get those later on today.

Found the default controls and default camera the best throughout. The seek feature is pretty neat feature, still hard to guess which gem you need to hit when the next lane is far away. Have played a bit in freq mode but I think I prefer amp mode. I have a new controller which I just unpacked just for Amplitude, the triggers feels fine imo, R2 sometimes feel just a bit mushy but noting painful and works pretty well.

Still didn't get the Super Difficulty mode, which I'm looking forward to as I don't like the temporary breaks.

I also think the sound mastering on a 5.1 system is pretty incredible. And was amazed to find my calibration to be exactly at 0ms. Rock Band 4 was a totally different experience for both sound quality and calibration.

I liked the music, still getting into it, I wish there are lower BPM songs though, most of them are very high in bpm.

And I almost forgot my name is in the credits!

Props to Harmonix for still getting the old amplitude feel. God I missed this game.

Anybody knows what the Interstitials option does?
Also, do I have to unlock song 15 to get super difficulty?

So I like the game and I'm glad I kickstarted it, and the gameplay is as great as ever. But the soundtrack is very hit or miss for me and that's coming from someone who loves electronic music. I find many of the tracks in this game really discordant and it's tough to get into a good groove with them. But, I guess the original Amplitude had Slipnot so maybe I shouldn't complain too much as it could have been a lot worse.

Also,
the special effects
in the last level of the campaign are really ill advised. I kind of can't believe they thought it was a good idea.

One more review. This time from Destructoid.

Soundtrack appears to be a major bummer, which is a shame because the soundtrack is what made the prior games so much fun after the first initial playthrough.

Put me as another that isn't feeling the soundtrack after about 15 songs

Very "same-y" soundtrack with most songs relying on endless synth loop noise.

Freq 1 had a similar soundtrack, but most of those tracks had decent heavy dance beats to keep you pumped.

The actual gameplay and graphics are phenomenal though. Playing on expert feels really good.

The soundtrack is curious. I wonder if they wanted something unique since Rock Band has become their dumping ground for top 40 rock hits. There is plenty of very popular electronic music they could have pulled from (licensing aside) but opted to go with relatively lesser known tracks. The very small budget probably didn't help things.

I am very interested in what the DLC line up is going to be like. Will we see Daft Punk? Aphex Twin? Chemical Brothers? Will they cross pollinate RB4 DLC?

I actually don't have many issues with the soundtrack. It's got some good stuff in there, and I don't recall any track I outright hated. A little more variety would have been nice - as someone else mentioned - the high BPM tracks all do start to feel a little samey after playing for a bit.

My biggest complaint right now, is more of a personal slight. I can't seem to get my Amplitude/FreQ feet back under me. I used to be able to play through almost all of Amp on Extreme back in the day, and here I am struggling to get out of Intermediate. I'm hoping it's just an issue with getting used to the trigger on R2, but even then I'm having a *very* hard time keeping up a streak for more than a few sections.

Hopefully I'll get better with practice, but right now I'm just getting frustrated at my own lack of skill.

I agree about CB! I flagged this internally. I had the hook up and probably could have made it happen, but either no one was interested in following up or (more likely) were too busy wrapping other parts of the game. I was part of the team that helped get folks like Danny B, Jim Guthrie, C418, etc on board and I think those tracks play great. That said, the stuff the team wrote for the game is rad and was written to be fun to play, a luxury you don't get with licensed music ("The bass part sucks and is boring? Oh well!"!).

The best part about Freq/Amp games was the gameplay and how, on higher difficulties, it made you feel like you're actually playing the song on some instrument, instead of just doing the simon says routine. I could enjoy that with any song on those games, even if I didn't like it. In fact, I can safely say that some of the songs I liked the least in those games, actually gave me the most satisfaction due to this experience being the most pronounced on them. I feel that the people who knock this game down so much just because of the soundtrack, never 'got' this in the first place, which is a shame. Comparsions to Audiosurf just make me shake my head in disbelief.
