[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

The Force has been subconsciously guiding her to Luke. I don't think that necessarily requires the lightsaber to bring the island into the dream. It sounds to me more like when she's lonely sleeping in the AT-AT she dreams of an ocean and an island, and on the island is the person who can fulfill the longing for family that she feels.

I don't think she'd even know what an island was in that case.

Just saw the movie. It was alright. Not amazing but not bad either. Kylo Ren was the most disappointing part of the movie. I don't only mean his weak-ish character but his acting was pretty bad as well (compared to most of the other cast who did good). But he lives on so maybe he comes off better in the sequels.

He's easily the best character

I can actually see him becoming that if they go the right route for him in the sequels and also if he improves his acting. But solely judging this movie I think he was subpar.

well J.J.A wants to show him like someone who's not a Sith yet.
Kylo Ren is this movie is like how Anakin should be in the last part of SW3

The only bad thing I see in this movie is the exploding huge ass space station/planet, AGAIN, it's like an awful meme now.

The rest was gold and Rey has to be Luke's daughter.

Thought he was the best part of the movie honestly. Loved how weak he was when the mask came off. He's going to be a deep character moving forward and I can't wait to see what they do with him. I really think he'll make more sense when the other movies release.

The lack of a reaction to like 5 planets getting destroyed seems pretty messed up. Unless they were completely lifeless of course. But still

I mean I don't know how the republic lets nearly half a dozen planets get wiped out as a sign of aggression and leave it to a rag tag group of soldiers to tackle a planet sized threat but, hey, I wasn't elected to the republic so what do I know

Well, by that logic, she shouldn't know what an ocean is either.

I don't think she did. Maybe the basic idea of one? But if all you'd seen was a puddle then you probably couldn't really picture it. They show her standing in front of an ocean like "Whaaaaat the fuuuuuuuck?"
Didn't know what a forest was. Probably had never seen a tree.
We don't know that she had access to what Kylo saw in her head. I'm going with no.

I personally saw Episode I in theaters 3 times. Granted I was 13 at the time. Later I would see II at a midnight showing when I was 16. I have a cousin who is quite the die-hard that saw I, II, and III 8+ times each in theaters, and drove about 5 hours away for IMAX on all of them.

I'm more of a casual fan, myself (only typically caring about the movies) and I'm planning on seeing VII for my second showing this weekend.
My God, i dont know how they can do it.

I've never actually been to a desert, but I know what a desert is....

You've seen pictures and video. She hasn't.
But tbh if you haven't been in a desert you really don't know. Have you at least been to a beach?

Oh I didn't know you had access to her entire childhood and all the books she's read and stories she's been told

"I didn't know there was so much green in the whole galaxy."
She hasn't been watching the Discovery Channel.

So i was wrong about Lucas getting a story credit given what I had heard about the production and I fully admit my mistake.

However he may as well have given that this almost a remake of A New Hope mixed with Return of the Jedi.

I've been looking through the Art of book and you can tell that there was an "ahh fuck it" moment where JJ gave up on anything resembling an original story after a good 8 months of work was put into the movie's visuals and plot direction. They designed hundreds of original ships, characters and environments and ended up using a handful of things, jettisoning loads of work, and then simply repurposing old work. I've never seen an art of book where work wasn't being invested to result into end goals. Instead they didn't have any end goals and just cranked shit out flailing to hit a obscure target.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie we got but I can't believe how much of a retread it is. I can only guess the deadline was approaching, Arndt was taking too long and JJ had to deliver a Star Wars movie on time so he pulled an Into Darkness. Why does JJ like plot coincidences so much?

Not knowing entire planets can be covered in jungle does not mean you don't know what a tree looks like.

Have you been to the rain forest?
You don't think flying over the rain forest would surprise you, if you were born in Nevada? I'm pretty sure you would still know what a tree looks like brah.

To say she doesn't know what an island is because she's never been to the Florida keys is kind of shortsighted

Yeah. That felt almost too familiar, especially for the first movie back.

Gonna continue to be lots of theorizing about her lol.

Also, her lightsaber fight was awesome.
Good thing too ofcourse after the shit Kylo pulled.

Why does JJ like plot coincidences so much?

At this point I feel like it must have to do with his need for super fast pacing or something. It's kind of why I had a feeling going into seeing this that his pacing could easily work more cleanly for Star Wars than Star Trek despite the rather good first new movie. That kind of pacing definitely felt more at home for Star Wars.

For example I think the bit with dropping out of light speed by the Millennium Falcon while inside the planet's atmosphere and landing through the snow/ice, while still kind of weird, felt much more in-line here than that bit where Khan used the stolen portable transwarp beaming device to go from Earth to the Klingon homeworld in a split second when he beamed out of that shuttle, which felt completely alien to Star Trek despite the device being established as able to do it.

I bet she has a green saber in the next one.

She'll keep Luke's lightsaber.

Luke will pass it on to her making her think that its because he really likes her but it'll really be because every user of that lightsaber has lost at least one limb and in the case of his pa dukes, got deep charbroiled, imprisoned in a heinous suit, and then lost a limb again. Luke doesn't need those problems at his age.

It really doesn't.
The lightsaber moment alone points to this, the hiding of who her family is only serves as a narrative device so that they can make a big reveal later, that she starts her life being miserable on a desert planet where she encounters an important droid that starts off her adventures, the novelization (supposedly) stating that she's cousins with kylo

I dunno, seems pretty heavily implied

Aphra being Rey's mom would be gold.

Maybe after Vader's death, she hunted down Luke in order to get revenge because she thought he murdered her hero/father figure, but instead winds up falling in love with him and his penis brings her to the light side before she tragically dies.

There was a Roxy Rocket in the EU?

Nah. Exact same discussions as the first page of the last thread.
I just caught up with this post right here. From Monday after seeing it. And there's still like 50 more pages to go to read the whole thing.

I should just stop and post my thoughts. I probably will next week or so though as I am hoping to see it a second time with some friends next week. Hopefully.

Anybody else wanted Grand Admiral Thrawn instead of General Hux? I know the EU is scrapped but we're starting to see some similarities like Kylo Ren = Jacen Solo. Would have been great fan service

He's easily the best character

I think it comes down to Kylo or Finn and I don't think either wins it easily.

Kylo takes a real battering, but he has so many great sense. The bridge scene and confrontation after that are just amazing.

Finn is pretty much just awesome start to finish.

The novel doesn't say she's his cousin.

And they aren't revealing who her family is for whatever reason. Could well be to reveal Kylo killed her parents and use that to tip her over to the dark side, who knows. There is really nothing that indicates she's a skywalker. Could be, could not be too. Really doubt they'll go for the "I'm your father" thing again.

Hey, look at that, Luke's theme playing during the moment she gets his lightsaber. Could that be foreshadowing?

Crazy huh

I sort of think that Han really tried to show fatherly love for his son for the last second of his life, so that Kylo Ren couldn't completely detach himself. He was short of shaken that Han didn't react with hatred towards him.I wonder what the last lesson gonna be from Snoke. He will find himself to the good side somehow he looks dorky and cute for a dark lord, people in the theater snickered when he revealed his face.

this part was really well done

i remember the leaks had people saying that han said "you're no son of mine" or something equally horrid before he died

the hand to the cheek was perfect

Thrawn wouldn't have lost Starkiller so easily... Would make sense to have such a character in VIII because it should end on a low point for the good guys, hence some sort of victory on the order's part.

Well the big scar on his face from the fight with Rey should lessen that some I'd guess. As well as making him look older etc. (assuming a couple years pass between movies).
