[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Mark Hamil must be pinching himself everyday. He must've spent years reminiscing about the glory days of his past, being part of the biggest franchises in cinema, how he was sought after by all...he probably thought 'man that was a once in a lifetime ride'... And now he's miraculously back there again, but this time hes part of something that is the bigger. I'm so happy for him, probably thought those days were long gone.
You clearly have not been following his voice acting career

Wow this is thread #2 and so many posts already. I feel like there is much to learn in the next 2 movies. I am hoping we atleast get to see where Snoke is in 8, and in 9 he will get some character development in full. I dont think we will learn his true motives till 2019. We will probably also find out more about The Knights of Ren in 8 as well and what makes them different from the Sith.

BTW i have seen a few outlets (Polygon) call Kylo a Sith. Getting really tired of that.

So are they already filming Episode VIII? I've the reception the script has been really positive so far, so I'm curious if they're already shooting.

Scenes have been shot but I think principle photography stars next month!

We should probably expect the first trailer/teaser with Rogue One right?

Its kinda cool its only a 1 1/2 years (actually less cause its may right?) till the next story.

Iirc, they've already filmed some stuff with Rian Johnson in Skellig (well, at least he was spotted there) but full on shooting doesn't start until next month.

For anyone still confused about the political situation:

Endor was the pivotal moment. After Palpatine died, the Empire fell into chaos because following his dissolution of the Senate, he never enacted a proper line of succession. The Senate would have been able to elect a new emperor, but without the Senate and with no clear second-in-command other than Vader (who was also dead), the moffs turned on each other and everything started to implode. Grand Vizier Mas Amedda tried to hold the Imperial core together by using body doubles to pretend that Palpatine was still alive but people saw through it fairly easily. There were coups with various people proclaiming themselves to be emperor, Imperial civil wars, and power grabs and fiefdoms set up by governors across the galaxy. Valco Pandion declared himself a Grand Moff since nobody could really stop him, Adelhard instituted the Iron Blockade in the Anoat sector and spread the propaganda that Palpatine's death was a Rebel lie, etc.

Palpatine himself orchestrated, following his death, a giant SCREW-YOU-FOR-WINNING plan called Operation: Cinder in which planets were bombarded with Base Delta Zero style genocide tactics, using droids that gave secret orders to specific Imperial leaders. They tried to destroy Naboo with some crazy weather satellites but Leia, Shara Bey (Poe's mom), and the current queen managed to stop it, along with the Rebel fleet under Lando's command. Naboo then ended up getting invaded three times by Imperial loyalists who wanted to reclaim it due to it being Palpatine's homeworld, but they were defeated.

A few months into the chaos, the Rebellion officially transforms itself into the New Republic on Chandrila and elects Mon Mothma as its Chancellor. The emergency powers from the Clone Wars are repealed and Mothma announces her intention of reducing the military by 90% following the end of the war. Some of her advisors think she is crazy. Her plan is to let member planets defend themselves with their own local forces, although the Republic would keep a downsized navy. Basically she just wanted to decentralize power.

Around this time, Admiral Rae Sloane - who had become one of the highest ranking admirals with Piett's death on the Executor - tried to form the Imperial Future Council on Akiva with a number of other dignitaries (such as "Grand Moff" Valco Pandion, General Jylia Shale, a slaver/banker named Arsin Crassus, Palpatine's advisor Yupe Tashu, etc.) and they debated what to do but never came to a conclusion. Pandion wanted to try to counterattack, Shale wanted to try to sue for peace, Crassus just wanted his money protected, Tashu wanted to retreat beyond the edges of the galaxy as he claimed that Palpatine felt his powers came from somewhere else and that the wellspring of the dark side existed somewhere beyond the veil of stars. The council ended up getting disrupted by rebels trying to rescue Wedge Antilles, who was captive there, and while most of the dignitaries died or were captured, Sloane escaped into deep space where she met with a "mysterious admiral" who had ulterior motives. Most of the dignitaries believed that by this point the Super Star Destroyer Ravager was the last big weapon the Imperials had, since many ISDs had been captured by the New Republic through battles or defecting captains, but apparently whoever this admiral is was in possession of more secret weapons. A lot of fans speculate it's Thrawn. His story isn't done yet, since we still have two Aftermath books to go.

One year after Endor, the Battle of Jakku happens, which is the largest battle since the destruction of the Death Star II and was fought over an Imperial weapons facility there. Grand Moff Randd is defeated by the New Republic forces under General Rieekan and Grand Admiral Ackbar. This is also the battle where (Lost Stars spoilers)
Captain Ciena Ree crashes the ISD Inflictor into Jakku after it is compromised by Thane Kyrell's troops, and this is probably the ISD that we see Rey drive by in TFA.
. After the total rout at Jakku, the Imperial core signs the Grand Concordance with the New Republic, which is eager to end the war, and the Empire is limited to the Core worlds. They official government apparently respect the treaty and stay within their bounds, but Imperial loyalist forces escape into the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions, like those under (Lost Stars spoiler)
Nash Windrider, who retreats to the Queluhan nebula and vows revenge.
. Mothma maintains the military on war footing initially but eventually decreases its size.

Over the next 29 years, there's apparently a lot of destabilization and growth in piracy, organized crime, and alien invasions as the New Republic fails to establish control on the level of the Empire due to its decentralized nature and small military. The First Order forms at some point as a neo-Imperial loyalist junta in the Unknown Regions, somehow getting the resources to build the Starkiller Base and next generation ships in contravention of the Grand Concordance, which they are officially signed to. They also adopt the theory of Brendol Hux, the former commandant of the Empire's Arkanis Academy, that a superior sort of Stormtrooper can be created by brainwashing and training children from birth, thereby giving them the loyalty and expertise of Clonetroopers and the genetic diversity of Stormtroopers; ironically, Hux got this idea from the old Jedi Order. General Hux is his son. There are also traitorous senators who are secretly supplying intelligence and money to the First Order. The New Republic is suspicious of them but refuses to engage them, not wanting another war, and Leia - who is fiercely anti-FO - is branded as an "alarmist". However, those in the government and military who are dissatisfied with the official response to the FO's growing threat form the Resistance under Leia and other ex-Rebel leaders like Ackbar and Ematt, and the organization is tolerated by the NR since it does its dirty work for it.

Where Snoke comes in, the Jedi get massacred, and the Knights of Ren get involved is unclear.

I'm quoting this just because I took too long to write this for it to end up as the last post on the page!

I think that explains why the missing part of the map was found on Jakku, possibly. It was erased from the other archives, but probably not this one (which would pretty much be the Fort Knox of the empire). Plus I think the original script even had a bit about looking for the missing map part in some imperial ruins on Jakku.

I'm expecting the first teaser with Civil War going by the timeline of the previous production

Filming starts in January though they apparently shot some stuff in Ireland back in September for weather related reasons.

Lol yeah. The terminology is this universe is a mess tho it's hard to give anyone grief. I just started up a replay of KOTOR (I realized I hadn't replayed it in ages because I always go back to KOTOR 2). In the first ten minutes we get Revan / Malik as "Sith Lords", some blaster-wielding soldier jobbers as "Sith Soldiers", and then an actual Dark Side Force User with a red light saber but that guy is called a "Dark Jedi".

Hard for me to get frustrated at anyone for misunderstanding "Sith" since it's used pretty fast and loose even by Star Wars sometimes. Double especially since eventually "Sith" becomes a term for a species, also.

Good to know. I'm looking forward to seeing how Johnson will handle it. He's got an incredible style, and he's a very sharp writer. I have n

Also, I'm very surprised that Disney didn't attach a trailer for Rogue One to TFA. I'd imagine they must have enough material to whip a teaser for it.

A few things about this film which make zero sense to me -

1. When Finn and Poe escape in the Tie Fighter, instead of traveling on the Y axis away from the ship, they travel alongside underneath on the Z/X axis and therefore put themselves in the line of fire from the cannons. Throughout that entire sequence, I thought, "Why not just fly down or up relative to the ship, and NOT fly directly at all the cannons?"

Because the cannons are only effective at range.

Interesting question: Old cast aside, who is the most likely out of the new crew to bite the dust?

I'm thinking it's Poe

This has probably been said before, but Poe was originally going to die in the plane crash. I wouldn't be surprised if Poe gets impaled in the sequels.

Too predictable/obvious/telegraphed for Rey's father to be Luke is irrelevant, not everything has to be a twist, if that's where they're going for the character I wouldn't be surprised if its revealed early on in the second movie.

It's kind of odd that Rey says "Luke" after Maz tells her there's someone who still could even though it seems like that would be Finn.

And the guy Kylo Ren kills in Rey's flashback reminds me of Alderaan guards from the first movie's opening though probably a member of the Church of Light who were likely caretakers at the temple.

Imagine if Rey's family is, in Maz's own words "never coming back", because they were "church members" who fell to the dark side and joined Snoke, and became Knights of Ren.

Luke would be in deep shit trying to answer Rey when she asks "did you know my family?", "Ugh yeah, and we have to go kill them... Don't fall to the dark side in the process please."

Just saw it, am I the only person here who was severely disappointed? The whole movie felt like a parody.
Parodies make fun of source material by imitating the original pieces but exagerating or changing them in nonsense ways for laughs. I'd love to hear all the ways this movie did that.

The Prequel Trilogy was a "parody" of the Original Trilogy. But seriously, no, not at all, Spaceballs is a parody and it's a shame Mel Brooks never did another.

Maz says "whomever" she's waiting for, Rey thinks it was her family that left her on Jakku, but yeah perhaps it's not her literal family as in her mother and father, assuming she actually remembers them. I still find it odd Rey said Luke afterwards though it seems more like going by the movie it was Finn since he came back after seemingly abandoning her.

Mark Hamil shot some scenes on that same island as the final shot of Episode VII about a month and a half ago. They had to go ahead and shoot there because of weather conditions and migration patterns of a species of birds that lives on the island. There were twitter rumors that he slipped and almost fell to his death on the narrow steps.

What's interesting to me is that there was no word on Daisy Ridley being there also for those shots. Especially now that we've seen the end of Episode VII.

Principal photography takes off in full swing in about three weeks.

it was good. not amazing. The hype for it reminds me a lot of the hype for Episode 3 where "it was better than the first two" has morphed to "its better than the prequels for sure!" that's a pretty low bar to set, i can literally list a 100 better movies than the prequels.

Rey is clearly Luke's daughter, I would bet money on this if vegas let me.

The whole movie though was pretty much Episode 4 redone(not surprsing since JJ did the same with with Star Trek into darkness/wrath of kahn). From the bad guys trying to find a droid that has the plans/maps that fall into the hands of Luke/Rey. Luke is Yoda in episode 7, cause everyone tells Luke he needs to find Yoda and now everyone is trying to find Luke. Rey is Luke, down to the being stuck/hidden on a crap ass planet, the clothes she wears, having her fathers lightsabre. Finn is Solo, in that he wants nothing to do with any of the fighting but can't help but do the right thing. Snoke is emperor palpatine in that we know fuck all about this guy and are like what's he about (obviously thoughts before the prequels, now we know who palpatine is). Ren is the only one thats not super similar to a character in episode 4, as he's a more similar to Anakin in the prequels. Also it took me a bit, but Ren's voice in the helmet is a spot on Beast from Beauty and the Beast. To the new "death star" and that whole plot. pretty much the whole time i thought this was episode 4 redone.

Despite all that. overall it was enjoyable and i look forward to a shorter wait for the rest of the movies. (as compared to the prequels.)

Just finished the movie

1. lets get this out of the way - 5, 4, 6, 7, 3, 2 ,1

2. Very much a set up movie, have high hopes for 8

3. Chewbacca should've been the one to hug Princess Leia, not Rey 😡

cool movie

I'm watching a bunch of Daisey Ridley, John Boyega and JJ Abrahms interviews on youtube right now which is obviously cut with images from all the trailers/teasers.

I'm really bummed they ended up never using the shot of Ren seen from the back in the forest when he turns on his lightsaber. It's such a great and kinda "violent" shot... The way he kinda throws his arm out while turning it on. So cool.

Also Carrie Fisher is a bit of a bummer (as much in the interview as in the movie)... I know it wouldn't have had as big an impact but I really with it was Leah that died instead of Han... He could have gone on a revenge mission in the next movie... Now instead we're stuck with her for at least another movie...ugh.

Sounds like the intention, a film that does a good job setting up Ep.8.

uh yea thats not what i meant at all.

you can setup the next movie without aping the same exact characters and plot points from a movie previously in the series. But as i stated JJ did this already with Star Trek.

If only the movie was so positive.
simplest explanation and all that. I ultimately dont care if i'm wrong, but if they are setting it up as some sort of big reveal or twist that she's lukes daughter, then i think lots of people have already figured that out.

Personally don't think Rey is Lukes daughter, and I honestly would be kinda let down if she is. I don't even think the movie was really even pointing us in that direction, but that's just me.

Why is she Chewie's friendo and Falcon ship expert?

Fair enough, much like EP3 I think people will start to criticise this film eventually for what it actually is. My problem with is it is that the acting and script are really hammy. I was actually glad when Han Solo died.

With that said though, I can see the sequel being good now that they no longer have to pander to nostalgia.

If the Starkiller sucks the energy out of the sun, why would it even need to shoot at any planet in the system? There's no more sun :p
Tactical advantage, First Order could deploy Starkiller and snipe planets from afar, avoid close encounter because First Order doesn't seem to have a large fleet.

It's voice acting, it doesn't strike me as platform that can compare. His joker voice is good, but again, its not the same spotlight. Just doesn't come across as noteworthy IMO. Side gig. Perhaps you can enlighten me.

Small or not, you make it sound like Mark Hamill has generally been dissatisfied with his life period.
