Aftermath is the first book in a trilogy, the second being Life Debt and the third being Empire's End. The latter two books aren't out yet.

I liked it but didn't love it, and the writing style turns a lot of people off because it's in second person present tense. If you're looking for something linking RotJ and TFA, it only does so a little bit since one of the main characters is Temmin/Snap Wexley (Greg Grunberg) as a kid. It's really mostly focused with some of the...aftermath of the first few months after Endor.

For other post-RotJ materials, there's Lost Stars (which goes up through the Battle of Jakku but spends most of the book in the Dark Times [pre-ANH] and the OT) and the Shattered Empire comic, which takes place immediately post-Endor. Closer towards TFA, there's the Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away short story anthology, The Perfect Weapon e-book, and Before the Awakening (which is three novellas about Poe, Finn, and Rey collected in one book). There will be a book called New Republic: Bloodline by Claudia Grey, the author of Lost Stars, next year, which is a few years before TFA.
 
Just got back. I thought it was good..really good in parts.

Best parts:
- Han/Kylo Ren scene was great and full of tension
- Rey and Finn were both great

Worst parts
- They really built another fucking Death Star and had it blown up again...seriously? It's cliche at this point. It was bad enough in Returns.
- I felt some of the acting wasn't that good. Poe was the main one.
- what was the point of Phasma I thought she was going to be a badass.

The Jedi Order still seems to be pretty much the same in terms of structure, since it was around so much during the PT and TCW, although I don't recall there being any canonical usage yet of the term "Grandmaster" for Yoda. But the basics are all the same: raised as younglings, become padawans, get trained and become Knights, highest rank to move up to is Master. No attachments, no romantic relationships, one padawan at a time per master, etc. The individual stories of some Jedi have changed, like with Depa Bilabba, who instead of disappearing from the story by going into a coma like in Shatterpoint now ended up waking from her coma (except this time the coma was induced by loss in battle to Grievous) and went on to train Caleb Dume/Kanan Jarus before she was killed during Order 66.

How Luke's version of the Jedi is structured is totally unknown, but I doubt it would be similar to the NJO.

In general, the Lucasfilm Story Group seems to be leaving the "background elements" like planetary names and the cultures associated with them, corporations, weapon types, etc. as they are, unless Lucas himself directly changed them (like Ryloth no longer being tidally locked or Mandalore having a pacifist government), but the characters get changed around a lot. The stuff in the distant past will probably end up getting radically changed around though.

Ah, thanks. Sounds like the real details of the universe history will be a while coming yet.

For fun, this is what I found interesting:

Around 4000 BBY, lightsaber crystals were used to indicate a Jedi's chosen class. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart. Yellow indicated a Jedi Sentinel, a Jedi who honed their skills in a balance of combat and scholarly pursuits.

I know a lot of us were saying Rey should go with a yellow Crystal. I think it's funny that Sebtinal probably would be the best distinction for her given her knack for mechanics.
 
Just saw it for the first time. Unbelievable job by JJ capturing the feeling of the OT. Rey and Finn were awesome and Kylo was a much better and more 3D villain than I expected. Loved it.

Canonically, the yellow lightsabers have only been seen so far by Jedi Temple guards and Asajj Ventress, who presumably stole/bought one after she was abandoned by Dooku. The Sentinels were a Jedi group during the time of KOTOR in the old non-canonical EU, like Bastila Shan, so so far they haven't been reincorporated.

I guess it would depend on how far back they want Luke looking for inspiration for his order, or if they want a clean break.
 
Saw it for the second time, much better non-3D actually.

Maz is one of the best additions, loved her.
Hope she comes back leading a ragtag team of space pirates, and then finishes the story she started to tell Han but to Leia.

Do people seriously think that Disney Infinity put potential spoilers for the sequel to a movie that just game out? I definitely think it sounds like him saying curses, there's no way they'd put him calling her cousin.

They had access to the original scripts for VII a year ago, though. John V said as much to the giant bomb crew

It wouldn't surprise me if something like Rey being Ren's cousin was on paper in those scripts but then removed from the film. I'm not sayin that that's what Ren says but it could've slipped through the cracks

I think it would be far too convenient for her to be Luke's kid. I feel like they want us to think she is, and tease us with the possibilities of it with things like the Skywalker saber calling to her. But I do like the idea of her just being a brand new lineage we aren't previously exposed to.

What I'm hoping for, or we atleast get hints in the upcoming expanded universe.
 
Wild Speculation:

Since the movie shows that Lucasfilms will pick things from the old EU to pick up, I wonder if they might take something for Knights of the Old Republic.

I know some people have brought up Reven and all that, but I'm talking not a character link, but a story link. What if they do like Revan's story?

What if Rey is evil? Luke wiped her memory and put her someplace out of the way in hopes it would stop her. Maybe she helped turn Ben, and that's why he seemed to recognize her.
 
I can't stop thinking about that first shot of Rey being a Nausicaa reference. We need a side-by-side of that.

Absolutely. The next movie being so close makes it easier to ear, but it makes me wonder when that stuff will start to feature these characters. We don't even know of Ep VIII happens after a time skip yet.
 
Was it ever proven that Anakin was actually the Chosen One? Or is there a possibility that they're still out there, possibly in Rey?

Since Anakin fucked up so royally sometimes I wonder if he actually was that dude.

I'm kinda-sorta open to this, but it'd still make for a really bad hamfisted space-Jesus metaphor. This is especially if she sacrifices her life by IX.

I don't think we will see much close to TFA until after Episode 8 releases. At that point Episode 9 will probably at least be scripted and there is less chance that someone in the EU inadvertently ties Johnson or Trevorrow's hands.

Well, didn't the Sith die off with Darth Vader and Palpatine? I'd say he fulfilled the prophecy, it just took a while and a lot of dead Jedis.

Also, technically speaking, eliminating the Jedi kinda was part of that balancing act.
 
There is no question that Anakin was indeed the chosen one in terms of the prophecy stating that he will be the one who will "bring balance to the force". But I've always seen it as something less defined entirely by his personal actions and more by the change in status quo simply by him coming into existence. Anakin joins the dark side, Anakin fathers Luke and Leia, Anakin betrays the Emperor, Anakin inspires Kylo Ren, etc. The force is still being balanced after all these decades, it remains in flux, and the balance is directly the consequence of Anakin having existed.
 
Yeah that chosen one prophecy shit, along with the virgin birth, was really some anakin-as-jesus allegorical bullshit. The PTs are full of Christian imagery and obvious similarities.

I don't mind that stuff, I actually enjoyed passion of the Christ. But I don't want it in my scifi, that's not what I come to it for.

They talk about balancing the force but then they also say that he was supposed to destroy the Sith. That might just be George Lucas post-OT, though.

I agree with you so much, it would be a great choice! I think it would suit her so well.
 
They need to do a better job explaining the "Force" in Episode VIII. My friend asked me why some people have powers, and why some don't and I just said pretend it's magic.

No, apparently it's not a balance in the traditional sense that where there's good, there must also be evil.

To the Jedi, balance means they're present while the Sith are not.
 
Just got back. Had some issues, I'm willing to look past some if its to set up the next 2.

Biggest problem was a lack of the epic Star Wars feeling.
A lack of world building/ travelling. The story just kind of moves along at a weird pace.
I really didn't feel an emotional attachment to anything and the First Order is lame. It's like Space Neo-Nazis, a bunch of petulant kids.

A lot of the characters felt flat and underdeveloped

Lack of John Williams score was very noticeable.

I'm hoping they expand more and this was just a bridge to the next 2 films

I thought it was a great take on that, especially since Anakin was so un-Christ-like. It was a more human take on what a "chosen one" could be. The idea that even someone so flawed could play such an important role in the development of peace and humanity.

That description was in the Legends section so it is not canon. Although, they might make it down the road.
