I attribute to the fact that we're in huge uncharted SW territory. No one's fate is clear at all.

But unlike the others Rey is the biggest wild card because of both her powers and the we almost have zero clue towards her past.

VIII will begin with a pan down to a hand floating through space, Luke's robotic hand, because Rey lopped it off after getting tired of his shit.
 
Hans kid turns evil and kills him, the man has been through enough. His family name is tarnished forever. His legacy must live on through the Falcon.
 
The more I think about it, the more I think making Kylo Ren a wannabe Darth Vader is kind of genius.

I mean Darth Vader is Darth Vader. You can't out Darth Vader him. Pretty much any villain they could've put in this movie would've drawn comparisons to Vader. So what better way to temper people saying that the villain is a Darth Vader wannabe than by actually making him a wannabe?
 
Why is Finn not a character focused on pacifism ? I mean, he was taken from his family at a young age and raised with others who had to undergo the same treatment. He got to witness and participate in the slaughter of innocent people as well. He got to see what horrors both sides experience. He then proceeds to betray and with damn near no remorse kill his fellow troopers without much remorse, cheering even, even though they're just blinded or abducted/brain washed as he once was..?

I was ready to at best tolerate him and probably hate him because he looked fucking ridiculous. But they made that a choice, it's brilliant

Saw this for the second time yesterday and it was nice to see the shift in audiences between the German dub (last Thursday) and the English one (yesterday).

On Thursday there was applause every time one of the OT characters appeared. Also as BB-8 did his thumbs up. Yesterday there was almost no emotion in there. Only laughter every time Kylo removed his helmet.

On another note: did anyone notice C3PO had his golden arm back by the time Rey left for whatever planet Luke was hiding on?

As for that cold start theory. I think they will do title crawl into the standard space pan.

Maybe it will show Ren escaping Starkiller base, because we never saw that. Second scene hopefully picks up right on Rey and Luke's first meeting instead of skimming past that with a time skip. They can use a time skip later in the film.

Because he met Rey, is falling in love with her, and now has an actual reason to fight- a purpose. That's extremely motivating and justifiable. He tries to run, till she is in danger... And then her safety out weighs his reservations. It's innocents he doesn't want to kill, but those wishing to harm Rey are not innocent to him anymore.

As to why he shoots storm troopers during his escape with Poe.... Fear. He's gone AWOL. Also a powerful motivator.

I don't think so. That's an interesting shade to his character, but I don't see why it would come up in the movies. I haven't read any of the current SW comics though, so I wouldn't know of its relevant to what's happening now for one reason or another.

That would be a first, a major time skip in the movie itself. Can't see them doing that either because what the hell would the scrawl say? Here's what happened in Ep 7?

I'd actually buy this explanation if meeting/falling for Rey had happened before his escape with Poe.

It was perfect though. We did get to see their first meeting, though without spoken words which I'm guessing is what you wanted. I'm fine with it beginning well into their relationship, a lot can be implied. And not showing Luke would've pissed everyone off and there'd be another year and a half of wondering if Luke's gonna be eeeeevil

Fear, AWOL. He doesn't kill anyone till after he meets Rey deliberately, escaping with Poe he is learning to use the tie fighters guns and gets some shots off so the can escape vs be captured and tortured.... Not the same as stabbing a storm trooper through the chest with a light saber.
