[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

JJ really hates distance and travel time doesn't he? From BSG instant warp in Star Trek to ships moving from point to point in the blink of an eye in Star Wars.

Even his super weapon had variable speed. Sublight as it's fired and travel through space then hyperlight to instantly arrive at its destination then sublight again is it splits to hit the planets in a single system.

Movie logic. Needed to speed things up or slow them down depending on the needs of the plot.

See: the sun being sucked of its energy at the end, but the weapon still not being "fully charged" until many minutes later because they needed more time to complete the attack.

By the way...with the sun being sucked of its energy and going dark at the end, wouldn't that mean the planet everyone was on would die in the near future anyway?

oop, I always thought at least his eyes were not CGI.

Anyway, no excuses for bad CG when you are as big as Disney and is working with LucasFilms.

If the fleet was in place around that planet the debris could have done damage I guess. Plus the lack of government now and panic.

I think the damage comes from wiping out the Republic government whom support the Resistance behind the scenes. Really wish they didn't edit down the flick from the first cut. Totally going to pick up the novelization.

They specifically use the term destroy when referring to the Republic fleet which suggests virtually every ship that a galaxy spanning Republic had was in orbit of the planets of a single system which just seems... Weird. Also the Resistance seems to have a single squadron of X wings which is what they used to attack the Starkiller. They didn't even have dedicated bombers like Y or B wings for a bombing mission. Everything about the fighting seemed to be downplayed from a galaxy spanning conflict.

As has been mentioned by others, it's two different clips running together. He shouts "Face Me!" which is one of his battle taunts, and then gets hit, and shouts "Curses!" which is one of his 'I'm hit' sounds. They just run together and sound like something more.

Ahh that does indeed make sense. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to hear it's already been discussed in the thread.

How is Snoke bad CGI?

... damn.

TFA had great CGI. Everything looked picture-perfect ... but ILM fucks up on Snoke? Nah. If they manage to have Davey Jones look like that during the day ... I'm pretty sure they can manage Snoke (who was in a chair and a hologram).

It's not really a galaxy spanning conflict. Despite the fact they've build Starkiller Base, the First Order are nowhere near as big as the Empire were in their prime. They've been operating quietly in the unknown regions for some time. The Republic got rid of 90% of its military once the Galactic Concordance was signed.

As for the lack of variety in ships, they wanted to keep to just TIEs and X-Wings so the audience wouldn't get confused. A strange decision after the brilliant space battle in Jedi.

Tbh I cannot yet tell if it is bad CGI, because it is indeed a hologram.

What I do know is that it looked like bad design. It looked like a fucked up hybrid of Gollum and Voldemort.

Opinions. Snoke is passable because there is the hologram excuse. But I also didn't like Maz. Found both of them VERY distracting during the film. Just as distracting as CGi Ewan McGregor in ep. II.

Okay, maybe a little bit less distracting than that, but still distracting.

Don't believe it. Sounds nothing like curses. And why did Disney remove something from their site relating to it?

The Graham Norton interview with Fisher, Ridley, and Boyega is so fucking good.

Was it a bad design or was it bad because you hoped he would look different? More "Muun" like?

I actually liked the way he looked. He had those Palpatine wrinkles going on and the other side of his face looks like it caved in. When Sidious got hit with his own lightning attack his face was deformed due to the Dark-Side. I think the same happened with Snoke (which I don't think his real name is anyway). The Dark-Side tends to "consume" the user which is a great concept.

Anyway, I'd love to see the following in Episode 8

- Rey and Luke "fighting".
- Rey constructing her own saber.
- Luke igniting his own green saber (d'oh!)
- Lando

...

I'm starting to think the knights of Ren could be former force church members, if there was a church of the force hisden, there might have been one for the dark side too.

Worst for Luke would be if Rey's family are Ren knights.

I'm sorry, what? Is this some new EU thing that they just decided wasn't important for the movie?

Anyone else curious about picking up the novelization of the movie? The book comes out next month, I believe. Alan Dean Foster is usually a solid bet.

The problem with Snoke wasn't that it was bad CGI, it was that he barely moved. It seemed pretty pointless to bring Serkis in for that, so hopefully he has a lot more impact in the future.

The more you think about it, the more questions that are never touched upon in the movie are explained via external material, which is a pretty poor decision.

Mass Effect has a Codex that fleshes out the world more, but you never need to read any of it to understand the main plot of the game.

Hopefully Rey is the granddaughter of both Obi Wan and Anakin.

Obi Wan has a daughter, said daughter tracks down Luke as he was the last person to see her Dad. Luke fucks Obi's daughter, creates super powerful Rey.

Makes perfect sense.

Some people are just offended that CGI is a thing that exists.

Lor San Tekka, the old guy who Ren killed, was actually a member of the Church of the Force and did seem to know Kylo personally, so the who knows.

I understood the plot of this movie perfectly fine without any sort of Codex. Any questions I had were irrelevant to the main plot.

Hmm Luke did toss the green one to the floor at the end of Jedi. Going to assume that particular saber got lost in the destruction... Unless he's seen later with it on.

There's always the chance that Luke picked it up after the Emperor was killed. There's nothing really proving or disproving that possible scenario.

But Serkis always over acts everything. It will be crap.

Thanks. This is the stuff I live for so that's super depressing that it's not even given a single token line.

I think JJ and Kasdan were wary of putting any kind of political stuff in the film. Adding a little more on the current situation wouldn't have hurt, but I think they were terrified of scaring people off by including anything more than a short mention of the Republic and their destruction.

The movie did a shit job of setting the scene and establishing the political nuances (if simple), because that's JJs style as per Star Trek 09. The early scene in ANH Vader and Moff are discussing politics with the other generals teaches you more about the Imperials, politics, Emperor, and Jedi mythology than TFA entire.

Rey going evil would destroy me. It's like Luke going bad. I wouldn't be able to take it.
Thankfully, that's never going to happen because who are they going to have us root for? Ben Solo? He killed his dad, and not just any dad, he killed Han Solo. He is irredeemable, and beyond the point of no return. Even Vader couldn't kill his family. It would just be like watching two bad guys battle it out. There is no more good.

This reminds me of the whole 'Luke is Kylo' thing. Luke ain't never going to the dark side. Same for Rey. At least I hope so.

Well its either that or a less believable redemption, or no redemption at all. I admit I'd like to see Kylo go full on into the dark and never come back. Would be interesting.
If we get the same result as the OG trilogy, then I might just give the next trilogy a pass after this. I've given the Force Awakens a pass for being so similar to New Hope because it's the first of the three, it would be cringeworthy writing if they have the same beginning and resolution. I want something new, not the major plot elements recycled in the same world.

I'll be rooting for Finn, the best character in Star Wars.

I actually expect that to happen a lot in the coming years/movies. On the one hand it might make the movies seem slightly more confusing, on the other hand it makes the other media (books, comics, games) more important in the overall narrative. They weren't kidding when they (the story group) announced that from now on all media are on the same level of canoninity. Really important stuff happens in the movies, the blanks are filled by the rest.
