The director of Episode 8 is Rian Johnson who gave us baby Rain Maker in Looper. I like that theory, but find it unlikely to happen. It would be great to have a flashback showing evil baby Rey.

The PT already borrowed from the DBZ playbook with "midiclorians over 9000!!", so a toddler who could slaughter an army would just be this new trilogy taking its turn to drink at the water fountain.

I'm told Rian Johnson likes anime. He should be all for it.

He's a big Cowboy Bebop fan and it shows.

I think Rey is responsible for destroying Luke school.
I think she made a mistake like guiding Ren knights (not on purpose) to the academy. And now she feel bad.
She will faced that to win against her dark side

Definitely. Ep VIII will easily be the most stylish of the three. At least that's where I'm at right now. Who knows how he'll plot it. Probably unconventionally. Either way, it's going to look really cool.

Christ, why did they have to mix Trevorrow into this shit.

If I can be honest, I think the thing I dislike the most about the new characters is the names Kylo Ren and Rey. Separately they're completely fine, but when people are referring to Kylo Ren as just Ren, while also talking about Rey, I get tripped up because their names are one letter different.

One of the things I learned about writing books for (young) children is that you shouldn't have multiple characters whose names begin with the same letter due to confusion. Even as an adult I find that this can mess me up and it now always stands out to me.

This is an incredibly tiny nitpick

I speculated about a scene like that happenening before.. I think it could happen. Shes too powerful so Luke hid her away afraid of her going to the dark side after a nasty outburst as a child, thats why Snoke wants her. Pretty poetic that Rian would get to make a scene like that lol.

Dont forget ben.

Kylo Ren: "Luke never told you what happened to your parents."
Rey: "He told me enough. You killed them!"
Kylo Ren: "No, you killed your parents"
Rey: "No!!!!!!!!!!! No!!"

Are we seriously arguing on Finn being a bad character that doesn't do justice? He was probably my favorite, and I only say probably because they're all so good that it's hard to pick one.

He was a badass. And brave. And held his own against someone trained in the force in a saber duel. Did Kylo take him down? Yes. But Finn, who's only used it the second time, still landed a few bits as well. I don't understand how people can complain about him.

Agreed, Finn was my fav too.

We never got confirmation on the other actress being added for episode VIII.

There's the British one that read with Boyega and another one. Tatiana Maslany was on the short list. It's probably not her because of some scheduling conflict, but I'll hold out hope.

Kylo Ren: "Luke never told you what happened to your parents."
Rey: "He told me enough. You killed them!"
Kylo Ren: "No, you killed your parents"
Rey: "No!!!!!!!!!!! No!!"
Followed by another outburst where she kills Luke in a rage when he tries to calm her.
Luke: "search... your.. feeelinngs..."
*dies*

Not getting all the love for this. Felt like a pretty perfunctory sequel / reboot. They hit all the required beats and that's about it.

It's incredibly lazy that the entire universe seems to have been reset with very little explanation. I also think they could have done something more interesting with the First Order other than making it a carbon copy of the Empire.

How has the universe reset?

My only problem with Finn is some of his comic relief moments seemed forced.

Like him trash talking Phasma when he was scared shitless of her and first order at the beginning. Side note: Han's "Do you have a trash chute...? Do you have a GARBAGE COMPACTER" was hilarious with Ford's deadpan.

Another moment was when Han was head tilting to signal Finn to turn around and look behind him. I just don't see how he did not pick up that universal body language and started asking Han to quit screwing off.

Going into EP8 and 9 Finn is really an open book in terms of character development. I don't want him to be force sensitive because obviously he's not. But I wonder what the writers will do with his character in the scope of "STAR WARS" when he's not an ace pilot nor a Jedi. He can shoot alright but supposedly so can a lot of other resistance fighters.

My favorite takes on this film are the ones that are so completely cursory I can't decide if the posters fell asleep in the theater or actually just stayed home and rewatched A New Hope.

I'm not terribly invested in the idea of Finn being Force sensitive, but I think it would be neat if he became that way. A guy with no Force ability at all, who taps into it by sheer force of will, to put to rest the idea you need to be born with a certain number of magical organisms in your blood to become a Jedi.

Alternatively, I'm perfectly cool with him being an awesome sanitation trooper-turned-badass who just wants to be a good guy. He's endearing as hell as is.

Watched it a second time ... I like it better than the PT - no question about this. However the lack of real strong villain is extremely disappointing.

The first 30 min of Kylo Ren were actually exciting ( the village scene made me believe we had a strong Vader contender) but through the movie , his aura as a dark character decayed exponentially and don't get me started on Snoke ... very poorly thought through ... why even show him ? Felt lame in all honestly.

There is also no musical theme strong enough to make you feel how powerful/ruthless the Empire, Darth Vader/ Ren could be. Nothing like the dark side themes in OT and even PT ( Episode III).

Some kind of a letdown in my opinion as I always tend to root for the dark side.

I'm glad we didn't get another one-note preternatural bad ass.

Right.

Space Scaveger Lady is a Jedi.

Former Storm trooper is then reduced to being the butt of jokes and further nerfed by the revelation of him being a Janitor.

Totally comparable, right?

Pretty sure the sanitation line was there to finally put to rest the idea that the rebels killed countless innocent civilian contractors when they destroyed the half-built Deathstar2.0.

First half of the film was filler; some good character stuff but the side plots were a bit too weak for me. And the light sabre just lying around? It was all a bit hand waved.

Once it kicks into gear though it's a lot of fun. Not as good as the originals but better on its own than the prequels (the final prequel is really good but it has s trilogy of build up).

Its much more contrived than the original trilogy but hopefully now all the pieces are in place it can build from there. Personally the giant Death Star was stupid (as was the hologram nonsense) and the weakest thing here was we see the Republic annhialated by a weapon they've no idea exists...and they hardly react - thankfully we have enough character going ons that it doesn't subtract too much but it is a real issue. I also never get the feeling the Empire fell - surely The Order are the new resistance? The dark resisting the light. Its tricky to place the events really - the film is purposefully vague (for me this is probably being overly concerned with canon) when it could make things clearer.

My hope is the next film spreads its wings (there's going to be a time jump - the Jedi trained vs a fully trained new Sith) and breaks free of convention. One thing the prequels actually got right was the political fall of the Republic - it was poorly realised but much better than just another Death Star. The trilogy should have no more Death Stars or giant killer weapons.

PS; anti-lightsabre Stormtrooper weapon is a really great idea.

So a solid 7/10 from me. The first half stops it getting an 8 but good stuff overall.

He'll be a Xander character. He has no special skill but he will fight for his friends.
