[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Speaking of Lightsabers, I really hope Kylo keeps his for 8. It seemed like Rey broke his during the fight and I'll be so sad if he gets a completely different one in 8.

Also, I love how there are only two lightsabers so far and it seemed like only Kylo has one among The Knight's of Ren.

It makes me remember a line from the Red Letter Media reviews, "ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKING LIGHTSABERS".

It makes it feel like having a Lightsaber is a huge deal unlike the PT where they were throwing them around like they meant nothing.

There were thousands of Jedi knights during the Republic era. Of course they had tons of lightsabers made available for them to equip. They'd be stupid not to.

Just saw the movie... I have a stupid question.

Wasn't Luke's blue saber lost when he got his hand chopped off? Wouldn't it make more sense to bring him the green lightsaber he crafted?

Speaking of which, Maz Kanata's explanation of she got that lightsaber ("that's a story for another time") was just unsatisfactory and eyeroll inducing for me.

Yeah I really don't like Kylo becoming the Vegata of the series. The whole point of this film was reverse RotJ. Retconning that devalues his entire arc this film.

That'd be like turning Luke Sith in the next movie.

:P

And this is from what many consider "the good one"...

Plinkett had a response to this as well. Every Jedi having a lightsaber was stupid to begin with.

BRUH!! I was rewatching TESB earlier today and I had the exact same question, a discrepancy for sure.

I wonder if it's because I'm already familiar with the thought of Luke's saber and hand being recovered from Bespin from the EU, but that part didn't' really stretch my suspension of disbelief. Hopefully they don't go the clone route.

I'm so looking forward to seeing the Knights of Ren fight the heroes. Their weapons seem to be electric like that of the riot control Stormtrooper. They will most definitely hold their own against the lightsaber user(s).

Even these guys understand that everyone the same exact weapon is a dumb idea.

Yes. So she used it like a staff.

It's pretty telling that both times she tags Ben it's with a tipper.

Yup. I kept thinking to myself why do she keep going for the lunge? Then it hit me. Nice touch.

People keep mentioning how Rey suddenly being able to go head to head with Kylo was so out of place. I never got that sense. Kylo was hurt bad, had he had gotten tagged by Rin and was in a really distraught state. I love that this filmed seem to scale back force users. In the OT they were powerful warriors but not unstoppable. Even Luke got a lucky swing on Vader.

Plinkett had a response to this as well. Every Jedi having a lightsaber was stupid to begin with.

In a New Hope, Obi-Wan himself stresses the importance the lightsaber was to the Jedi in the Old Republic. To have the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy not being armed is pretty stupid.

In The Clone Wars there's a whole arc where kids have to go on a journey to find their Kyber Crystals and then have to be taught how to make their own Lightsabers.

However, in Attack of the Clones you're never made to feel like a Lightsaber is an important weapon for the Jedi. They get destroyed, they get thrown some new ones and no one gives a shit.

And just how often they're taken out in the PT also destroys the whole mystique around them. It's the Michael Bay effect but applied to Lightsabers, when you see them every other scene they stop feeling special. TFA/OT made them feel special, the PT made them feel like mass produced throwaway tools.

One can imagine he'll make a new one for VIII, if they stick to the "you complete your training, you make your own saber" thing. Might be similar, but stable, who knows.

after one decade this fight will be ranked #1 (or 3 if 8 and 9 are better :P )

Really is a great fight. Has what made the original series fights great, and adds some of the "wow" factor without losing that like the prequels did. It's intense, but it never becomes one of the Prequel Dance Routines.

Is this a place you share your thoughts about a movie and aren't particularly afraid to post a spoiler because everybody here have seen a movie, many more than once?
According to OP, it is.

So here it goes, I watched a movie with bunch of people, some of them aren't that much into wars and barely even remember previous movies (probably haven't seen them all even) and some that have seen all, like me. We all liked a movie more or less, I mean a general consensus was that a movie is good, Rey is good, BB8 is good, all actors were in their place, except for Kylo Ren, we didn't find him convincing and he reminded us Marilyn Manson a tad too much (lol), First Order was a bit overplayed, but that was OK too. I just hope they won't take ages to film other two movies because waiting is hard.

No he doesn't. He just mentions its a weapon they use... not the only one. Being prepared to guard peace and justice also isn't the same as pulling out the lightsaber every time you hear a loud noise either.

I said it multiple times but the Rey vs Kylo fight is the closest thing to the Link vs Ganondorf vibe in a blockbuster.

No, Plinkett said it was dumb that all jedis had light sabers, since they were a bunch of aliens. One of them even had tentacles flapping around that would obviously get cut. He didn't say it was dumb for them to be armed.

Plinkett also said it was dumb that the siths would have light sabers since Palpatine refers to the light saber as a "jedi weapon" and in a condescending way, and the only reason Vader would have one was because he was a former jedi.

Then Luca goes and gives everyone a saber, even the Palpatine:P

It was mentioned in the Plinkett reviews, but I have to agree that they should have made weapons unique to every Jedi. I know the EU had all sorts of Light Saber variants, and it would have added to the mystique around them. Yoda for example never should have had a Lightsaber. Sheev never should have had one either.

Huh? Why do you say she is?

I mean like at the beginning of this movie, she seemed a bit on the older side in the PT.

Also was she on Hosnian Prime when it blew up? Reading the new EU stuff makes it really clear that the FO didn't get rid of the New Republic like people are saying. The rotating planet thing alone kinda kills that.

Wait is there really an argument that at the time in history where there are a ton of active Jedi, that lightsabers are too prevalent? Like I kind of get the argument that in the arena Obi and Anakin are just given new lightsabers without any real story weight to it, but it was a ton of Jedi all going into battle. It would seem odd, in universe, if they didn't have extra.

Can someone link to the arguments against there being so many lightsabers during a time when the Jedi Order was still active?

That explanation makes no sense at all and is not supported in the films, since Vader wields a lightsaber. Wouldn't Sidious tell Vader that now that he's a SIth, that he no longer need a Jedi's weapon and order him not to use it?

Also, Palps wants Luke to kill Vader with his lightsaber, he doens't say shit like "get rid of that Jedi weapon, if you wanna be my apprentice"

Rogue one is coming in less than a year and Episode 8 comes may 2017 :) a Star Wars movie every year for the foreseeable future

Is episode 8 full on filming at the moment? I heard they were recording more on the island at the end a few months ago, but the key actors are all busy. Guess they are filming in chunks? I haven't seen anything about the filming other than that.

Filming begins January

Only prequel acknowledgement I got from the movie was Ren's comment about bringing back clones. That what you referring to ?

acknowledgement is acknowledgement. (There's also those flags at Maz's place)

Either way, it's kinda silly to willfully pretend three of the biggest films of the late 90s/early 2000s just didn't happen. Of course they happened. It'd be kinda dumb to delude yourself otherwise.

They're just bad movies. That's all. You make enough movies in a single series, you're going to have some of those. It's not like Star Wars was some sort of hallowed collection of films beforehand. If Godfather can slip gears, anyone can.

The concept of Sith doesn't even exist in the OT. Why would Sidious care what he used? Sidious didn't need weapons since he could just light people up with a thought, but Vader did.

Daisy Ridley still weekly training for playing Rey. I think she won't be part of an other movie beside star wars until 2019.

The novelizations of the OT films explicitly state that Darth Vader is a "Dark Lord of the Sith".

Sidious treated Vader like crap all the time. He even purposely made his cyber-implants painful for shits and giggles. I don't think he gave a crap what weapon Vader uses. Hell, Vader's cape is held by a chain as if he were merely a slave or a dog.

Two production issues I noticed:
  • She is chased down the same ravine twice on two separate planets.
  • The James Bond Villain Corridor they shot from different angles and approaches for different base locations.

Although the original Blofeld lair callback is pretty awesome.

Mon Mothma isn't in TFA

It left me wanting more, but I think it was the right length. You don't want to draw them out to absurd lengths like the Revenge of the Sith fight. Then it just gets boring.

I kinda like long superbly arranged fights, the heck one of my favourite movie duels is Cloud vs Sephy and it takes literally like half an hour or so and it is glorious!
OK, not half an hour, I know, but still

but I can see your point too
