Emma from The Last Remnant >>>> Lighting

Give her a solo action game.

Emma would've been a much better choice than Sylvaria for Weird-Ass Character Action Game Spinoff In A JRPG. Especially considering the actions of both characters. But, oh well.

This is my monthly reminder to go back and finish TLR one of these days.

They werent.

It's so bizarre.

"Guys, where do we put an extra chapter in!?"

"Let's say in the first 20% of the game?"

"Okay. What else can we do?"

"I KNOW! LET'S MAKE SURE THE PLAYER CAN'T CONTINUE TO GET POWERFUL ENOUGH TO BLOW THROUGH IT OR AT LEAST GET THE FULL STORY BEFORE REACHING THIS EPILOGUE 'CHAPTER'!"

"BRILLIANT! SHIP IT NOW!"

the companions in pillars are so good too, they remind me a lot of new vegas' in how grounded and seemingly pedestrian they can look at a first glance but there's a lot of great writing in their dialogue and in the themes of their character arcs

what a great game

talking about Darius, how hard is it? I have it but still haven't played it.
keeping in mind that I got so bad at them, I'm not sure why I'm even considering playing it or asking that, of course it's hard, sigh.

CS mode is a nice experience for a bit until you get further into more areas. Then the game starts bringing the pain. I haven't tried too much AC mode.

Unlocking areas and ships along with new music is such a joy in this game.

Got a $50 gift card from my brother-in-law!

Was thinking of Fallout 4, but ... man, those reviews are disappointing. It's fallen down to my "$20 or less" list.

So!

Here's what I've got in my cart so far:

Any other must-haves in the under-$10 range?

Craft the badge so you can have ribbons like the rest of us. You'll be the prettiest io of them all.

------

Finished Hook earlier today.

Minimal puzzle game. Short. 50 levels, with the first 40~ being a breeze, really. Last 10 amp up the "difficulty" more significantly. It isn't very good at that, imo. The ramp up is incredibly uneven. I use the quotes because there's really nothing difficult about it if you just look at the circuits carefully, really, and in the last 10 you're given 3 lives instead of starting the puzzle over again on first screw up. They just get convoluted after a while.

At USD$0.89 I can't fault it, though.

I think my review said pretty much the same thing, 40 levels of tutorials and 10 levels of the interesting stuff. Still a nice little puzzler and only takes an hour or so. Also easy 100% cheeves, only one for finishing it.

Why, all my friends said it's their best game? :(

Wolf is amazing, equal fave with borderlands for me.

that video is actually a much better demonstration of what a colossal failure of a system vats continues to be:

enter vats mode

head head head head head head head head head

watch cutscene

repeat

...

this is not gameplay

Elf guy is the best companion with the best lines.

...I can't remember any of their names.

The Talos Principle
Ikaruga
Downwell

Currently deciding on one last game, and have narrowed it down to either The Talos Principle or The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. It's not like grabbing both would be a problem, I am just trying to balance spending when I know I can't get around to both right now with my insane backlog.

Both games are right up my alley, and I know both are great choices. However, I am primarily looking for the one that has the best story. The gameplay in both look great to me, and I am honestly down to play either of the two genres. If it does make a difference though, I tend to lean a bit more towards JRPGs, as they are my absolute favourite.

Any help?

You could also check out the humble monthly thread or the B/S/T thread and pick up Talos Principle for cheap.

yeah tales from the boredlands is probably gonna be top 3 this year for me.

absolutely a must have for anyone that wants to go on an adventure

Elf guy is the best companion with the best lines.

that's aloth, he's pretty alright, tho not my favorite

i like grieving mother, durance and eder the best (in that order). they each have really interesting internal struggles and deal with very profound themes that i don't think i've seen tackled this way in any game (if ever). grieving mother in particular is probably one of my favorite companions in a long time, she's so damn good

if story is what you're looking for, it's a tough one

tits is pretty light hearted and has some really fun characters but it's also very safe and pretty much a whole lot of i've-seen-befores

talos is a bit more ambitious but it has a very pretentious feel that i didn't particularly appreciate. the story's pretty good and it's interesting to figure it out through bits and pieces through archived emails and literal writing on the wall. but i didn't really connect much to talos in the way i've connected to other stories dealing with the same themes, so i'm not sure if i'd recommend it on its story merits

talos is a pretty good puzzle game tho and it's a lot shorter so i'd probably recommend that

that being said if you're a jrpg fan you're probably gonna love tits so go for it

Grieving Mother was my favourite. I loved how all the other companions thought she
was just some old woman following them around. They never saw how she helped them in battle and the like, they just never noticed her. Pretty interesting parallels with major depression, feeling like you're part of the background not participating in the group manifests itself in a physical way in the game.

Question about that, I know you can create your own party if you want but I read that you miss out on a lot of great content if you do. How many can you have in your party? Can you make say, like 2 party members and the rest companions and do those stories too?

Been enjoying my winter break--and thus not really posting, been lurking gaf as a whole. Got a few things (Like finally got Trails SC).

Also the Steam controller is pretty amazing after you adjust.

Zyklon, don't hurt me like this.

Just because it's not GOOD gameplay doesn't make it NOT gameplay.

yeah, grieving mother is my favorite too. the writing on her character is great

it works like this, inkeepers let you create partymembers of your same level for a fee that you can swap for like written companions and such

you can have any combination of player-created and "real" companions you want (up to 5 in your party + your own character)

personally i've just been using the obs-written companions but i could see a case for using player-created ones in harder difficulties or if you want to try some of the other classes in the game. say, there's no monk to recruit in the main story, at least that i've found, so you could just create one of those (or buy the dlc, i think there's a monk companion in the dlc)

Zyklon, don't hurt me like this.

Just because it's not GOOD gameplay doesn't make it NOT gameplay.
ok, you're right

just don't call me zyklon

Resident Evil 6 for $10. Dive in or save my money?
Resident Evil 6 is one of the best action games of all time so it was worth the 100 I paid for the collector's edition on the PS3 :P Although that came with all of the other RE games on the PS3 which I didn't have at the time.

Playing New Vegas is heartbreaking, such a better game than 4 but the shooting is so poor in comparison. Oh well.

rico just thinking about you reminded me the last aaa game that had worse writing than dying light

max payne 3

now that was a major shitshow that could've been saved through skippable cutscenes (the level design is still garbage but shooting felt really good)

Those who simply want to keep playing their games and are not making a purchase at this time are free to simply ignore the SSA update for now. It only takes effect for users who explicitly confirm it, usually during a new purchase.

Users being forced to accept an updated SSA in order to keep playing the games they'd earlier purchased always rubbed me the wrong way. Nice to see Valve's finally changed that.

Yeah. I didn't think I'd come away with much this sale but a couple purchases and trading got me:
Neon Struct
The Masterplan
Towerfall Ascension
Fistful of Gun
Grim Fandango
and Tomb Raider 13

That'll keep me at it for while. Happy.

I like Matthew Brown no less than any steamgafer but does he absolutely has to make us play in reverse universe, why clearing a square is the left click, why? It can drive any human nuts!

There's an option in the menu screen to go back to proper universe.

I played a bit of Tales of Zestiria earlier with the 60fps fix.
xiJk0LH.jpg

Amazing, ain't it. Can't wait for someone to devise Symphonia unlock.
Also, and this can't be overstated, make sure to enable 4x SGSSAA if your GPU allows it. The FXAA used in the game introduces an ungodly amount of shimmering, that isn't resolved even by downsampling from 4k. :\

I did, only I still haven't finished it, I remember Knurek (I think) liking it, I can't say I like it, but maybe it gets much better in later chapters, who knows

I didn't really like Contagion all that much. The ending was terrible.
Also, make sure not to play with the Developer's Commentary. There's simply too much of it, breaking up the game's progression, and most of it doesn't give you any decent info.
