Steam adult game programmer has account frozen by PayPal, £80,000 in earnings withheld

That policy has been around since forever, I remember lots of adult game devs saying that their PP account was either banned or frozen almost a decade ago when Patreon started banning more extreme or taboo content.

If you google a bit you can also find ancient articles from two decades ago that had people complaining about exactly this

and this link also has their old "sexually orientated" policy

but PayPal seems to have been enforcing this much more strongly over the past two years, like Pixiv was one of the first big platforms to change things because of that

what PP is doing here is still criminal, even if it is against TOS. They should just send the money and close the account and not freeze money. That is something only the government should be allowed to do.

Yeah, internet archive has snapshots of this specific policy page going back to 2022, but as you pointed out the policy itself is older than that. Good to know. Thanks.

Highly doubt it's actually criminal - PayPal has been successfully freezing funds for many reasons for well over two decades.

Freezing funds because of criminal activities is fine for me. But doing it for violating some stupid fantasy TOS based on questionable morale takes is complete bullshit. If something is legal it needs to be buyable, right?

The sooner people abandon PayPal, the better for everyone. It should be much easier than with Visa/Mastercard and not having a credit card.

What they've done is simply stolen someone else's money. They should either do what they're supposed to and process the transaction or at the very least return it to the original source.

I buy digital games and do online banking and stock trading like everyone else.

But always try to limit as much as possible giving any gov or company control.

I've only used PayPal once in my life to buy something, so I don't know how PP works with this $80,000 of unclaimed funds, but you're asking for trouble the more control you give up. And digital mediums are the most prone since they can always tell someone at head office to flip the switch and you're out cold.

It's not about ownership all the time since someone can always take a company to court to win something back but that's a total hassle and no guarantee since their TOS probably has a clause buried in the 10 pages of tiny font paragraphs.

It's about control. Any digital medium can shut you out cold. But Black and Decker can't take control of your toaster.

I only use digital mediums when I need to. I never have my credit card/payment info online unless it's for mortgages or reoccurring utilities bills you need to etc…. I've never even used my credit card ever to buy online stuff from Xbox. I just buy discounted Xbox cards from Costco and load them in $50 or $100 at a time.

End of the day, use your head and limit as much control you give to companies, especially if they have digital control.

How this hasn't worked its way to musk or trump is strange. Like surely it's a freedom of speech issue? They've been on the ball at pushing back against governments and companies enforcing rules on Americans etc (this this guy may not be some affected will be).

I hate the twat but JD Vance got a recent win forcing the uk gov to change track on a snoopers bill that would have forced backdoors into everything.

If yr toaster is somehow connected with his manufacturer, theoretically he can be switched off as well...because in the TOS was mentioned that the company doesnt like it when you make yr toast too black. :messenger_winking_tongue:
