Have you guys tried driver-level downsampling? I've never been a fan of DSR.

It was actually the original form of downsampling, and modern drivers have only made it more accessible.

  • Nvidia CP
  • Change Resolution
  • Customize
  • Enable Resolutions Not Supported
  • Create Custom Resolution
  • Enter your desired resolution that conforms to your aspect ratio (Can create oddball resolutions by multiplying your height by 1.7 repeating, assuming 16:9)

When we were initially downsampling, you were essentially overclocking your monitor by messing with the timings settings. My old monitor was actually capped out at 3367x1894. Now you just leave the timings settings at automatic and the driver takes care of everything for you, pretty slick.

My monitor refuses to cooperate XD i can't push 1440p at 60Hz but i can at 59Hz. But there is an issue with that too because after applying custom resolution there is 2cm/1inch black bar on the right side of my monitor and picture refuses to go full screen XD

Undertale upping it's price because of its popularity I see (it links to project cars)

Kholat? I haven't played it yet, but I'm interested and it sounds like it fits the bill.

I was just about to mention this. I haven't played it either so I don't know if there's puzzles/stealthing but it looks really cool. Open world so it's probably more focused on exploration than anything.

Why is Steam putting Divinity: Original Sin (non Enhanced Edition) in my discovery queue when I have the re-release and more importantly, can't even buy the non EE version.

Here are the games I was thinking of buying and have them on a future to buy list. Anything I should really go ahead and get?

Big fan of the STALKER series, almost universally recommended. Seems like you're a shooter fan as well. It has lite RPG elements, so think of it like Fallout but more focus on combat mechanics.

Welp, time to buy a bunch of birthday gifts to store in my inventory for the next couple months.

I initially criticized the "no flash/daily" approach of the sale, but I ended up buying way more than I have in the past couple years.

Seconded. The STALKER series is one of my favorite series ever. Atmosphere and tension is second to none.

So i'm thinking of picking up a Ys game, ideally one of the 5.99 ones. Would origins or 6 be better to start? I'm not too concerned about the chronology, more just the best entry point game play wise, complicated isn't bad if it's smoother.

Also in general i've only really picked up some telltale games this steam sale, any last minute recommendations? I don't have a fantastic machine, it's an hp envy laptop with an A10 processor, maybe 4 years old. It runs fallout 4, but tends to disagree with that statement in the city areas. 30 FPS is not something i hold my breath for. I think I can pull 25-35 on tomb raider on med-high at 720p with shadows and water and fun turned off.

rpgs are mostly my thing but i like a bunch of different stuff. Go wild folks!

The Park?

Ooh I have that on wishlist but heard it's short so I never got it

you should play the mansion from bloodlines :>

that thing is scary af

that vampire game? I bought it years ago and never gotten to it :(

people were like "It's activision, it'll never drop below 15 bucks, get it now!", yeah well!

Wasn't Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs supposed to be like that?

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is pretty close. It has very few puzzles and the ones that are there are completely rudimentary and almost entirely ditches the stealth elements of the original. A lot of people were sour on it because it was such a departure from the first game in those regards but I thought the whole thing was really solid. If you're looking for something more open though it might not be for you as this is almost entirely linear.

really, I actually find the first game annoying lol

Layers Of Fear
Homeworld Shipbreaker

Kholat? I haven't played it yet, but I'm interested and it sounds like it fits the bill.

thanks for the recommendations, there are more than I thought

yeah I have kholat on wishlist, will probably check it out

you should totally try it out, it's clunky as hell but such a great game, lots of atmosphere and some really interesting mechanics

and it has that one section that is like a haunted house thing that's super scary lol

I finally played Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines for the first time this year.

The hype is real. Game is amazing, top to bottom.

are there any good horror "walking simulators"? Like is there a horror game that doesn't involved solving a bunch of puzzles and stealthing

Like gone home with a horror theme

The Park has no puzzles or stealth, just walking through a park. It's more psychological horror than pure horror though, few jump-scares etc. But yeah it's short, 2 hours max.

Hello, what's this?

A keenly dark twist on the traditional murder mystery setting, The Deed is an Adventure/RPG game about getting away with murder. Arran Bruce, the rightful heir to Dunshiel House, returns to his family home after discovering that his abusive father has decided to disinherit him from his Will in favour of his sadistic, deranged young sister. In a fit of anger and greed, Arran has decided to remove his sister from the equation in order to restore his own inheritance. Can he manage to get away with such a foul deed?

* Every decision you make influences the outcome of the game
* Possible multiple endings.

-Meet the Family:
Explore Dunshiel House and encounter Arran's twisted, dysfunctional family and their servants. Take care, though - everything that you say or do can have an impact on the outcome of The Deed!

-Choose the Weapon:
A rope, a candlestick or good old-fashioned rat poison? There are many household items that can be put to a dark and nefarious use. Choose carefully from ten possible murder weapons, bearing in mind who might become a suspect as a result of your selection.

-Plant the Evidence:
Father, mother, maid, butler ... any of these individuals could take the blame for your heinous act, if you can find the right evidence, plant it in the right location and manage to raise the suspicions of the Inspector.

-Face the Inspector:
When the deed is done, it's time to face the music and be interviewed by the wily, perceptive Inspector. Can you dodge his questions and avert his suspicions? Will you walk away a free man? Many possible endings await ...

Sounds interesting. Yandere simulator for non-otaku folk? Genuinely didn't expect to find a good RPG Maker game I didn't knew about.

yeah I really should

It's just hard for me to get over the clunkiness for some older pc games, unless using a guide to point me at the right direction

i wonder how league feels on steam controller

the only real reason to buy that thing

I finally played Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines for the first time this year.

The hype is real. Game is amazing, top to bottom.
yup, one of the best wrpgs of all time for sure

replaying as a malk or nosferatu is really entertaining too if u have the time for it

yeah I really should

It's just hard for me to get over the clunkiness for some older pc games, unless using a guide to point me at the right direction
well it's not like clunky in that sort of way, it's not obscure or unapproachable, it's just a rpg stuck in source engine for no particular reason, so real time combat and shooting is there and it's awful. there's also stealth that's pretty crappy too

but it gets the job done, mostly, and everything else about the game is so great

i really like that setting tho, i used to play the pnp game so i'm biased :p

i literally posted asking about it like 2 minutes ago lol

IS THIS WHAT IASHY FEELS LIKE EVERY DAY

A bit late to reapond, but I would recommend Kholat. You basically are in a giant Russian mountainscape with nothing but a map, a compass, and coordinates. You then can freely explore the winter wonderland, fight notes, occassionaly evade enemies, but a lot of it is walking around and finding events. Which works because the game is gorgous, the events cool, and the story interesting.

Also, if you disliked Amnesia: The Dark Descent, don't let that cancel Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs as an option. A Machine For Pigs is oretty solid horror walking simulator with some incrediably light monster and puzzle sections, but it's mostly walking around. Has some nice touches, an interesting settinf, though the story is very pretentious, but for some reason I liked the game. Beautiful music, too.

One sort of rough recommendation I will give is The Old City: Leviathan. It's not whole horror, but it has its moments and each chapter has a hidden event that usually makes things more horror-y. I just warn, the game has a LOT of reading you can do, though the reading ties in nicely to the game's setting, and the setting is varied and gorgous.

There's others I can name if you want more.

So I've been told! The next time I play it will definitely be as a Malkavian. Not too interested in having to use the sewers to get around as a Nosferatu though.

yeah nosferatu is for like

a third of a playthrough

just to try it out and see how it works

DreadOut - yay or nay or waitfortheupcomingDLC ?
YAY. The DLC is actually a stand-alone spin-off game, but you'll get a discount on it if you own the original DreadOut. Plus DreadOut is less than $4 right now.

Ine of my favorite somewhat 'old-school' indie horror games. It's low-budget, and some puzzles are cryptic, but the game has so much bariety and some actually really creepy scenes. To beat Acts 0-2 should take about 4-7 hours, and during that time it throws so many different scenarios and ghosts at you that are actually quite different.

There are some stand-out moments in DreadOut that will stick with me. My favorite bit of the game is towards the end of Act 2, there's a series of moments that are amazing one after the other. But it captures the intrigue of older horror games, and is quite the experience. If you can accept low-budget and some cryptic puzzles, I'd highly recommend it.

Also, tip. When the town turns dark and you can walk inside the building; Don't. Instead, turn back and head back to the car while its dark.

DSR (Nvidia's downsampling) is broken w/The Evil Within and Windows 10, works fine in 7. Haven't tried it in the last few months tho.

It's a game that really benefits from the improved image quality, so I'm holding off on finishing my playthrough till there's a solution (or I'll just install 7 again on another hdd).

I played and it with DSR in October and it was fine

I find it amusing people are mad about the sale
people are still buying it left and right at retail
20% off wasn't needed, that was kindness probably.
kindness is a strong word, i'm sure they're following a logical sale schedule that makes sense for them

What DLC?
The game is complete.
There is a spin-off game that was originally DLC known as DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark. It releases in 2016, features an open world with various objectives to complete. It features expanded versions of all the main locations of DreadOut in open world mannerisms, plus two entirely new locations, all 15-20 ghost of the original game, as well as 13 new ghosts.

Story-wise, it takes place during the period later in the main game
when Linda gets dragged into the mirror world in the mansion towards the end of Act 2.

kindness is a strong word, i'm sure they're following a logical sale schedule that makes sense for them

On that note, $2 shouldn't make a huge difference.

I'm assuming it was actually moreso to grab everyone who said "I'll wait for a sale" even if the sale was very small.

Also isn't it only one guy?

You should give it a chance. Corpse Party or whatever that released on PSP was made in RPG Maker, so not all of the releases are crap!

CP lead to the two follow ups which are absolute trash, sooo

I've played 1 or 2 not-shit games with rpg maker, so it's not impossible, I suppose.

I do like the idea of more murder mystery games.
Here's some RPG Maker recommendations:

-Ib
-Witch's House
-Yume Nikki
-Mad Father
-Crooked Man
-Close Your Eyes
-.flow
-Toilet in Wonderland
-LISA
-OFF

All of those but LISA are free.

always sometimes monsters and to the moon

really good rpg maker games

i do sigh every time i realize it's built on that engine and i'm not gonna be able to press f12 without reseting my game or take screenshots or have good resolution options or whatever

but i thought the source engine is sorta modern! Everything else you said sounds awful tho so that's not helping.

And Iashy don't feel

yeah i'm going to give a machine of pigs a try, i sorta liked dear esther, The Old City: Leviathan is on my wishlist but good to know more on what it's about!

But seriously, if you guys have not played Ib, Witch's House, and Yume Nikki yet, you really need to ammend that. Those three are must-plays. And all three are free.

I can describe them more or link them if someone asks and is curious.

Now that the sale is wrapping up, remember we have a Community OT starting up right after the sale finishes.

We are also holding SteamGAF GOTY voting in that thread as well.
