It seems Square-Enix is sitting on FFX-X2 HD PC version

I've been checking SteamDB and more specifically some of the leaked games. And Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD caught my attention.

It seems that the work on the game started 9 months ago and stopped 4 months ago... basically, 5 months of work, which is basically the time you'd expect for a port. But since 4 months, the game hasn't been updated on the database. Could they be sitting on it, waiting for IX to be released first ? Did they just cancelled it ? (well technically, you can't cancel what hasn't been announced :p ) Or maybe they haven't finished it ! And are now taking time ?

I really find these leaks interesting in the sense that it basically shows when devs are working on a game and when they made progress significant enough to upload changes.

I believe many times industry workers have stated that completed games are often sat-on for proper release timing when the marketing and publicity team dictates. It's nice to see SteamDB corroborating that.

Could need more QA and time/resources for that*, or just strategic positioning by marketing

*I'm aware this will get "lol" in response

They are seemingly releasing an FF game every other week on Steam (yes, that's an exaggeration), I think it's not too far fetched that they are simply trying to give it some space.

If it all leads to FF Tactics iOS on Steam, then the wait will be worth it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Square were sitting on a whole bunch of of Final Fantasy ports and they're just pacing them out. VI has just come out for PC, and IX has been announced first, so all that's missing is I and II and they're probably just a matter of time. Meanwhile, VII has recently come out for the PS4 and XII HD has been rumoured for ages. We could even see IX and VIII come out for that too, but again, time will tell.

They're probably waiting on IX. They like to do ports in mostly chronological order for some reason.

iOS hasn't gotten VIII yet, but it probably will before IX
and X-X2 HD
.

I'm guessing PS4 will get VIII and IX a few months after Steam. And maybe III/IV and the atrocious V/VI ports as well.

For shits and giggles:

Probably just waiting for a while, they did release FFVI & Lightning Returns just recently. No reason to eat their own games' sales by pushing out everything in too short of a timespan.

Do you actually think a PC port of FFX is preventing them from making new FF games or is this just one of those things people say without thinking about it because they're edgy

It's obviously the latter.

Lightning returns just landed. Give them some time.

FFVI PC released less than a week after Lightning Returns. Sure it's probably a much easier port, but still. I'm expecting IX over the Easter, and X/X-2 late Summer with XV Fall 2016 or early 2017. Assuming that XV comes to PC that is.

So we may potentially have the option of playing at 4K, maybe 60fps with a powerful PC? I really need to get around to building one.

Activity via SteamDB doesn't mean much until there are years on the clock if you ask me. The same could have been said for Phantom Pain and GZ which did nothing to their subs / depots / apps etc till very late on after announcement, yet obviously were not cancelled. At the same time content in the database doesn't mean that the content will release soon or at all, it's just confirmation that it is there. It's also possible that due to the leak and companies knowing users know of their game, they may go quiet till a time they see fit or even delete the app itself.

Gee I dunno. Its been what? 7 years between actual numbered releases. I can speculate. Like youre speculating about me.

I doubt you're gonna need a 'powerful' pc for that. It's ultimately a remaster of a PS2 game after all.

You'll have to explain to me why only numbered entrys matter.

I love that Square Enix are doing this... even if half the ports are mobile versions.

Just having the entire franchise playable in one place and preserved is great.

Once they throw FF Tactics on there as well, it would be the best place to play all the FF games.

Well, it would be if FF VI didn't look like crap. Excited to see how the FFI X port is though. I have high hopes.

I hope that if they release FFT they add mouse controls. I know the game was designed for a gamepad but I'm used to play that type of games with a mouse.

Are the Final Fantasy PC releases only through Steam?

Back when VII PC was re-announced (CLOUD SAVING! LOL! SO FUNNY!) it was through their site with user account shenanigans.

So many people complained about it (for half-decent reasons, mind you) that when it was re-re-rereleased on Steam they eased up on that.

Everything else since then has been on Steam AFAIK.

Remember that when the changenumber changes it doesn't necessarily means that the game files are updated.

I just wanted to clarify that "Changed changenumber" doesn't always mean "Game files have been updated".

When an application or package changes, Steam sends out a "changelist" to notify all Steam clients that something changed. This changelist has a number, referred to as "changenumber". This changenumber increments globally and is not a per-app thing.

App and package updates do not even have to be related to the app/package itself as Valve does periodical changes to a batch of apps/packages. For a changenumber to change on an app that hasn't been active in months, it's more likely a useless change rather than a sign of life.
SteamDB FAQ

So you think if they announced tomorrow FF: Random subtitle game over FF 16 more or less people will care?

What does that have to do with making new games? It's a largely meaningless distinction on its own, especially in the case of FF where each game is pretty standalone and the next numbered title didn't even start as a numbered title.

Gee I dunno. Its been what? 7 years between actual numbered releases. I can speculate. Like youre speculating about me.

Well, come on, it's not like there's no data to go off of regarding why FFXV has taken so long, or the development issues of FFXII. Also, do FFXI and XIV not count?

Probably spacing it out from Type-0 and Lightning Returns. I also agree that it seems probable that we will get the FFIX remaster first on PC, and then X/X2 after.

So looking at Steamspy, it looks like Final Fantasy XIII has shot up to around 500k after the Winter sale. XIII-2 is now at around 270k. Not bad considering that game's start last year.
