My dog was murdered by a 3.5mm audio port and I will not rest until the standard is dead
Six weeks ago, Japanese website Mac Otakara reported that Apple is planning to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7 in favor of an all-in-one Lightning connector for both connectivity and audio output.

Adding fuel to the rumor, Chinese websites Anzhuo.cn [Google Translate] and Wei Feng [Google Translate] cite supply chain news from unnamed sources that reportedly confirm the controversial rumor is true.

Thank goodness. I'm glad Apple will kill the decades old, ancient tech of aux input. Good riddance. They'll drag the luddites kicking and screaming into the future, just like they have always done. Look at the past threads on GAF alone about optical drives and Flash. Hilarious.

I also hope someone comes up with a good Bluetooth because today's and tomorrow's Bluetooth is awful. Their motto should be, "Next year!"

Edit: People are confusing the lightning thing. Apple doesn't want you to use a proprietary hook up. They want you to use wireless. They're just giving you lightning as the connected option. Join us in the 21st century jfc

Beats headphones am cry.

Yeah, because why support audio output in an universal way when you are Apple and you can make people get specific headphones with specific plugs for your devices at 5 times the price of the normal ones.

So for people like me who rarely uses the headphone jack on my iphone, on the rare occasion that I use it, it's gonna be 'oh crap, I forgot my headphone adapter'. Great.

What if I want to listen to music while my phone is charging?

Still think this a completely bone-headed move if it's true.

If they were replacing it with a non-proprietary connector that'd be fine. But they're not. People will be upset because it's a significant functionality reduction, will massively increase costs, and the only benefit will be to Apple's bank balance as they screw 30% out of every pair of headphones under the made for iPhone programme.

It'll be the lightning cable debacle all over again.

Spectacular. I hate my iPhone's ability to instantly interface with any device that's compatible with an aux cable. The future is now.

Why thank god?

Am I missing something here? Why would anyone not want a traditional headphone jack?

Not a fan. I would be, if there was a universal open standard to replace the 3.5mm headphone jack. I don't want every phone to have their own connector for something as common as headphones.

Apple will sell the adapter for such a premium it's going to really hurt when you lose one.

This is the kind of stuff that turned me away from Apple in the first place.

Having to replace a 300 dollar headset with a Bluetooth wireless one that isn't going to be 100% on connection (because Bluetooth never is and never will be when you're in motion) or having to use a dumb as shit $40 extension cord is not exactly practical or handy.

But I guess when you already have all those people tightly locked in, consumer convenience is not going to be high on your radar, I get that.

Apple fans eat this stuff up. How many people will be forced to buy a proprietary and expensive adapter to make their stuff work on iPhone now? How many manufacturers will be forced to make a shitty iPhone compatible version of their products to work with this.

"it just works !"

Apple isn't going to put their mouse design team on this one.

Apple fans = millions of consumers worldwide

This seems like a real pain that will reduce a phones functionality for me.

I mean I wouldn't mind if it were was some sort of non-propriety alternative but as far as I can tell this isn't so that kind of sucks.

The hell? It will be more of a fuss to take it away. Unless it can hook up to any bluetooth headset/earphones, which it probably won't, then how is this a good idea other than to squeeze yet more fucking cash from you?

Christ.

This is freaking crazy. I plug my phone into my car's audio jack via 3.5mm every single day. I use it daily, to and from work. I use it every morning when I run, with my headphones. I use it at work with my [expensive] headphones sometimes. Why in the hell would they do this?

If it's true, I really can't see myself ever going beyond a 6s. That little hole on my iPhone is a really important part of my daily life.

Can the iPhone 7 also have a feature where it empties my bank account, sends me a mocking email about it, and then tries to poop in my mouth? It doesn't have to be real poop, mind you. Any kind of disgusting acidic paste would do.

I like Apple but I dislike this idea that everything has to constantly be thinner with every iteration.

I think you got didgeridoo'd.

Apple killing ancient tech but is this new tech supposed to be better or is it just Apple creating proprietary BS for profits?

Doesn't the iPhone already hook up to any Bluetooth headsets?

What the fuck...and people support this?

It's a port with three metal contacts on it. You plug something in and it stays put, and you can pull it out easily too. What's to improve?

I mean, at the very least with the lightning cable they were replacing a proprietary connector with another proprietary connector. It was still screwing the customer over if they had any iphone-specific accessories they still wanted to use, but replacing the universally-standard headphone jack with a proprietary connector is just mind-boggling to me.

People are confusing the lightning thing. Apple doesn't want you to use a proprietary hook up. They want you to use wireless headphones. They're just giving you lightning as the connected option.

It doesn't hook up to any Bluetooth headset? What?

Bullshit move. I don't need my phone any thinner and I don't want to buy Bluetooth headsets just to listen to my music away from a computer.

Between this and the Macbook USB-C nonsense, Apple are making themselves hard to defend these days.

Bluetooth is garbage, especially for music
Also much more expensive. Also batteries. Etc.

3.5mm jacks work for 99% out there, they are omnidirectional and (don't quote me on this one I'm not an expert) since even high-end headphones have 3.5mm plugs they also seem to perform just fine.

I don't see why they would need a replacement.

I'm an iPhone user and think this is pretty silly. On the other hand, I also still have an iPod solely for music.
