What is with this trend of removing features from smartphones? First it was removable batteries, then it was SD cards, then MicroUSB was next to go, now 8mm jacks? I understand people want a streamlined experience, but it's designed in a way to extract as much money from Joe Blow as possible every step of the way.
It's this sort of thinking that is stopping us from adopting new patentable technology that mega corporations can charge licensing fees for.

Interestingly, Apple will know exactly how many users actually plug anything into the 3.5mm jack (last game I worked on detected it, we could then work out how to develop the audio in the game). Analytics yo.

Fuck. I'm sorry I only ever used the jacks on my iphone 4S and 5S for a total of less than 1 hour during the 2 years each that I have owned them. It will probably be the same for my 6. I"m sorry.

I'm so looking for the day we get fully wireless headphones. I love my tone infinims, but they're still tethered to a wire.

If Apple is making headphones like the Dash, I'll definitely look into picking them up, just to use with my Sony mp3 player.

Which Sony player? I have the NWZ-A17 and it is superb. I really like the sound signature of clearaudio+. There are a few songs that become a bit crass but for 99% of what I listen to it's great.

I no longer use my external dac because of clearaudio+ actually.

Same. Best music player I've ever owned.

You should wait and see what they do with their new phones maybe the dongle is small and packed in and not much of a big deal. I normally listen in my car via lightning cable and use Bluetooth at the gym. At home I use a PC and speakers for music but have wired headphones as well.

Stupid thing is, any dongle will be bigger than the space taken by the original 3.5mm Jack. So you'll be carrying more anyway.

If they could update lightning to support analogue audio and have a super cheap physical converter that would be ok with me. Likely lots of shops would stock it, so even the 'I forgot my headphones, need an emergency $10 pair' situation might not be so bad.

Anything else requiring a powered adapter or chip, so it's $25 just for that, and it'd be really annoying.

I wonder what the percentage of people who never do or do it so rarely that losing it wouldn't matter

Same now that I think about it. Every time I hop in my car it uses Bluetooth automatically. I bought one of these for my wife's car that doesn't use Bluetooth and I haven't really looked back. I still use my headphones with my iPad Mini when I'm traveling because it has a far bigger screen to listen to stuff on.

The 50 hour battery life is the icing on the cake.

Oh definitely, that and the microSD card support.

I can't wait for the day headphones are fully wireless. I hate being tethered to something. It's always been an annoyance to me, corded game controllers (the wave bird fulfilled a long time dream), headphones, USB cords, etc.

Id be pretty dissapointed in this. Id have to see some good reason design wise it would be omitted. Aux is just too damn handy overall, i use mine near daily, though only with earpods so its not like im a super high end music listener. Its nice to be able to line in to any vehicle or stereo system with aux in.

The first step is to actually make wireless headphones I would rather use than aux, not to shove out a product without the ecosystem around it already established.

This. OP is batshit cray

Apple developing revamped, cord-free Beats with charging case ahead of iPhone 7

If the Dash are $300 Apple's version will probably be $600

You're the one actually proposing that there'll be a large shift of iPhone users to Android over something that can be solved with a 5$ adapter

Spoilers: It definitely won't be $5

Don't be sorry, it just means you're a consumer who wouldn't be affected by the headphone jack being removed.

It's possible that most people are like you, but only Apple really know that.

Wireless headphones suck. I hate having to remember charging yet another thing. I hate that they can run out of battery if I'm travelling for a long time.

Wireless headphones were a mistake, they're nothing but trash.

I have used alot of bluetooth earphones, so just some comments.

The recently new bluetooth 4.0 spec draw alot less power than the old ones. I got a mini earbud that look like a hearing aid and it can last 3+ hours. I got it from China directly and it was only $6. I was very impressed.

However in general bluetooth earphones' biggest issue is cold weather. The battery die a lot faster in the cold.

If you want to go out on a day hike in colder weather, using bluetooth earphones is just not practical, even with backup and/or a usb battery brick. On a commute bluetooth is way more convenience than a wired earphone. You don't get tangle up when browsing.

I've been using Bluetooth headphones on my phone for a couple of years now. Whilst commuting they are massively convenient, not having to worry about having a cable tangling down your front, or getting the phone ripped from your hand if you put the cable down your top and the cable gets stuck as you're pulling the phone from your pocket. Even that is akward with headphones plugged in. For me, Phone in Pocket, headphones, bag, jacket on and go on my way. Battery lasts for about 10 hours I would say. Are they as good as wired cans? Nope, but I don't really care, they are good enough and practicality wins over for me.

I hope all the people complaining about sound quality only have lossless audio on their iPhones and don't use streaming services of any kind.

I've been using Bluetooth headphones for a few years now and I've never had much of a problem with the batteries of the headphones. Hell a good set of cans can go 20 hours. It's also much, MUCH better for exercising. The real battery drain is on the phone. It's probably triple the drain running the BT radio that whole time versus plugging in a set.

I also use bluetooth earbuds but I see no reason to outright remove the jack. I agree with your experience but at the end of the day, it's not a good argument for removing the alternative.

Agreed. I said in an earlier reply that Apple will know exactly how many users plug headphones into their iPhones and could make a decision based on that (whether they did that, or went ahead to remove it regardless is another matter). However, even that is hardly the best way of doing it, as a percentage of users will still be annoyed about it.

I guess we will have to see if this is actually the case. It won't be long until we see early outer shell leaks and will be able to immediately tell if they have indeed removed it.
