Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

All of this dead on arrival talk is nonsense. Is it too high for the masses and impulse buyers at the moment? Yes. Is it too high for the enthusiast market, the only people who are going to be using it in the early adopter phase to begin with? Not even close. People are also discounting Gear VR. I saw multiple kids who got that for xmas this year on my FB. All they do is use it for basic games and watch 3D content on it. An entire new generation is getting prepped for VR with the much lower end products that work with omnipresent smart phones. People should load up the original iphone thread on GAF. People thought Apple was going to collapse as a company the phone was priced so high. It is laughable in hindsight. Will this be that big? Not likely. But it sure as fuck isn't DOA.

we all knew it was bullshit, Palmer probably didn't though
Well in a way it actually let them make a higher end product so drove up the break even price point. All those custom components wouldn't have happened without Facebook so if you can't afford the Rift I guess you can be mad about it... but if you can it's a great thing, because this is a much higher end and luxury item than the utilitarian DK2.

I was expecting $600 - $800, so this is on the lower end lol.

Still, good to have some price announced. Now everyone else can hurry up and announce theirs.

Funniest part about this is, you are assuming gaming is the killer app. It is actually much more familiar media that is fricken killer (like sports, plays, stuff they show at sundance, etc)

Or you are too young to remember what passed as data service on the first data enabled phones, or when TV stations were racing for HD broadcasting (and the backlash against it)

Don't pull age into this, good chance I'm older than you.

And no, I agree the social/media part is important but you already get that with GearVR with the fraction of the cost. I want applications that actually make the Rift+high end computer worth owning.

Holy shit with shipping thats probably at least $900 AUD.
I thought they were going to make it cheaper.
I wanted one, but now? Fuck no.

If PS VR is anywhere near this price too, it's dead. Nobody will pay that for a console peripheral.

they should lower the minimum requirements so that more people can use it

The first mainstream consumer cell phone was $4000 in early 1980s money. I'm sure every Joe Sixpack had one.

If you notice Gecko and Sir Laurence are the only ones who had them in Wall Street. So would other tech minded people in that fictional world. Not to mention Gecko has a blood pressure set up probably costing thousands. Now you can walk into any pharmacy and get the same thing, more accurate and shit tons cheaper.

I'm sure others with more means would also in the real world, but you're correct. Amazing how people think technologies start at "their" price point.

Still trying to get confirmation but it actually seems like its $781 AUD inc. shipping. For whatever reason the kit only goes up to $649 when you set your country to Australia on the website, unfortunately it doesn't specify USD or AUD but setting your country to anywhere else automatically adjusts the price to reflect local currency, so I'm hopeful.

Advancements in VR are insane right now. Eye tracking is already set for the second generation with reliable foveated rendering to probably come shortly after. That alone is going to be make a significant difference, not to mention the advancements in screen tech, increasing fov, and so on. If you think just because this costs a lot, it'll be future-proof for a good few years, you will be disappointed.

Oh, I thought you meant that a $600 monitor today would be out dated tech a year or two from now. Sometimes I am just really terrible at reading.

So hold up, will an AMD FX 8370 really not be able to handle Oculus? It beats the minimum Intel chip in so many areas..

And what will be the incentive if the audience isn't there for this great content?

VR is a lot more expensive than getting a high res video camera for HD televisions.

The incentive for the audience will be the great content. The incentive for creators is a new medium (not a media container like dvd, VCR or BR) for them to find better (hopefully) ways to express themselves, and open a *new market* (=money, lots of).

Also what is this thing about a production camera costing less than VR? If you're talking about hardware you're obviously talking out of thin air.
If you're talking about producing content, I don't understand either. Like, talking about fantanumbers and simplifying and trying to put parity into the comparison, you need 4 pc, 4 licenses, 4 people to produce something for VR, you need 1 camera, 1 microphone, 3 lights, 2 pc, 2 licenses and 4 people to produce something for tv...
Can you explain better?

How do you know what group you're in? I can't it on my order.

It doesn't show anywhere else, that I can find at least, except for the last screen after you submit your order it says, "Your Oculus Rift is expected to ship in [insert month and year here]."

Can't help excitement for March!!!!!

Outside of very basic games, the Xbox One would really struggle to drive the Rift. It requires 90fps at 1080x1200 on 2 displays.

Yeesh more proof the current gen consoles are underpowered then I guess: PS4 probably wouldn't fare much better with those requirements.

I could still see Morpheus dominating the market though eventually since gaming isn't Facebook's ultimate goal in acquiring them.

My GTX 780 is not ready, but I hope I can manage with it somehow until Pascal is available. Feels silly to buy a 970 or 980 now.

So I just pre ordered one and it says shipping will be in May. Is that accurate?

Also I can cancel my order at any time correct?

May is accurate for where they currently are. It started in March, went to April, now in May. It will be listing June pretty soon I would imagine.

Not sure about canceling :(

Welp this is rough. The US price would be a budgetary stretch goal I would need to convince the girlfriend of but the EU price is laughable, especially factoring in the additional taxes. I really wanted to get in on this day one but I'm way the fuck out at that price. Have fun people that are richer than I am (or more willing to subsist on dollar meals or something).

4K tvs officially doomed because the first ones were tens of thousands of dollars (with little to no available 4K content)

Its not the same. Making 4K content is not that different from making HD content. In order for companies to make VR content the audience has to be there to provide incentive. I'm not saying it's going to fail but this price is not exactly helping.

Yea but I can post on GAF from my phone :) just sayin

I mean, comparing just the Rift to a phone+gear VR is a little strange. The PC-Rift combo was always obviously going to be more, and the gear was always going to be cheaper than the Rift on its own. Not to mention they aren't really that comparable as far as what they do and how they do it.

Weird - they are claiming that $600 is below cost - whats expensive about a VR set? Is it the screens (cheap for phones but perhaps they have to have a special spec)? The motion tracking?

If the PC does all the processing work, just seemed expensive to me as someone who doesn't follow the VR technology etc.

There are plenty of games that are already well suited to VR like cockpit titles. Yes, you have to make the game with VR in mind, but it's not that different from making a normal game, under many circumstances. Yes, it's going to be a while before we see completely VR exclusive AAA games, and most of the work done in those spaces initially will be indie titles, but we're going to see AAA games well suited to VR support it in the short term. Arguably it's cheaper than buying whole new cameras, editing, mastering, equipment etc required for 4K.

It sucks they had said the price was going to be $350 earlier for sure. I tried VR for the first time last year though (Crescent Bay model at Oculus booth at PAX east), and it blew me away. Definitely grabbing one of these
