Xbox One at 18 million (activated units)

I think you put too much faith in this rumor.

I trust Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurotts contacts at MS way more than I trust random posters at Neogaf calling them out with no information.

I'm ignoring the segment next part as all they did was watch the video I posted which comes directly from the horses mouth. Can you watch it and get back to me?

I sometimes swear this forum is filled with a a lot of tinfoil hatters sometimes.

Damn Sony really killed it, What's the most surprising for me is the non effect that Halo had on sales and shit, mind blowing.

December is a huge month for the entire world, so growth at the end of the year in the ROTW is already going to be big, regardless of how good the deals were in the US, espicially since the US has Black Friday in November, which is taking sales from December.

Why are we focusing on December? There's other months in the year beside December. In these months US share of XBO sales should have increased (Better deals, US focused games like Halo and Gears, Black Friday...etc).

Plus in December, XBO was $299 for 18 days, RoTW (minus UK) price stayed the same.

I'll go with Mary Jo analysis compared to Sales GAF. Sales GAF are mostly amateurs attempting to plan or predict, when it actually takes millions of variables to create an accurate model of sales, based on actual events of a prof I had at Uni, whose job was to predict sales in various industried and get them right or close to get companies to trust him and he got it within a 5% tolerance. We all know MS won't release actual numbers and we also know not all units are activate or updated, so best case MS is at 20-22M which is still almost a 2:1 ratio, right now the US market is keeping Xbox afloat, so I expect MS to jump next gen sooner, as soon as NX launches, so they have there own ideas on what rhey can improve on. I think this will the shortest gen this round compared to past gaming generations.

'Well, in fairness to Microsoft, a large portion of that Sony lead comes from sales in lesser countries that don't matter - which is to say, countries outside the Unites States.'

You think it would have mattered if it was? Last gen was/is the perfect example of how strong the PlayStation brand is. Sony made many mistakes last gen, launched one year later, and still basically tied.

The build up to PS4's launch was completely different so I don't really see how the Xbox One could have had any possible chance.

What could they do then? Something completely crazy needs to happen to the PlayStation brand for the Xbox brand to be in a position similar to the Playstation's (current) worldwide popularity; One could arguably say that the PlayStation brand has been relevant for two times the length that the Xbox brand has been relevant.

Sony plays as much of a role in the Xbox brand's worldwide popularity as MS does in my opinion. There would need to be a major slip up from Sony (causing them to lose a ton of non-Western support) for Xbox to be a similar worldwide brand.

Yes, I think it would have mattered if it was.

The point isn't winning, it's shifting the needle enough. There is time dependence, there is entrenchment. But just the Xbox 360 "unentrenched" Sony in the US and UK from the PS2 era and the PS4 is doing the same years later.

By the same token, I could say Microsoft made many mistakes, launched at a higher price, and is still only around a million units behind in the US. The matter is what needs to be done to move the needle, and they did essentially nothing for the european market, save for a couple of bundles and limp-wristed exclusivity agreements. The message from the reveal was loud and clear: It was an american device, tailored to America, so we shouldn't be surprised that it lost even more market share outside of the UK that it had before.

They're actually at 27m sold-through. They're afraid of becoming arrogant like Sony, so they're being very modest. Trust me though, they're closing in.

Timestamp?

I don't have the US versus worldwide numbers, but Microsoft is seriously running out of marketing PR statements here.

I mean, the disclaimer language to get to say the phrase "best selling" must be like pulling teeth. ('in north america' , 'since november 1st')

Being serious for a moment, I wonder if Sony gets an even bigger uptick in PS4 sales once the PSVR is released.

Europe is carrying the PS4 in levels I never would have expected

In the US it's still beating the XB1 but nowhere near the level of dominance the PS4 has in Europe. I completely underestimated Europe.

PS4 - 40 million
X1 - 20 million
WiiU - 3 million

Approximations, someone confirm.

Lmfao what is this nonsense.

Wii U has 3 mil in JAPAN not WW.

So that "quote" was not actually a quote?

Not necessarily. If the Xbox One had a slew of exclusives, especially new IP's, that were all extremely highly acclaimed, Eg Uncharted 2, Last of Us type levels, along with a further price drop, I think many gamers would consider picking it up.

I think games like Uncharted 2, MGS4, GOW3 and Little Big Planet really helped the PS3 gain momentum. But it took time, it certainly wasn't an overnight thing.

The Xbox One definitely has some solid exclusives, but nothing that's really demanded attention because of immense critical reception, not even in the way certain Xbox exclusives did last gen with games like Gears of War. But a similar issue is facing the PS4 so far as well. With the exception of maybe Bloodborne, none of its new exclusives critically truly stand out, and I think it sort of takes that for an exclusive these days to really grab the markets attention and lift off, against the onslaught of mega selling multiplatform titles.

I definitely agree that there's nothing that the PS4 or Xbox One has exclusive wise that feels "next gen wow!!!" like Gears of War did for its time. I still don't think this matters though.

PS3 took a while to get the ball rolling in terms of solid exclusives but the system was still doing better than the 360 in many territories during the early part of last gen. Third party games obviously meant a lot during this period. 10 years later and now the third party games have an even bigger impact -- pretty much causing true exclusives to take the backseat.

At some point, most likely within this year, MS will have to compare sales of XBOX One to XBOX 1 (lol) for some proper PR bullshit.

Only thing they'll bring up is that it passed the OGBox and even then that is not likely to be made into PR. (Xbox was +24 million)

I am pretty sure of that.
A new feature this special will give console sales a push. If it's a huge or small one depends on the pricing, if it lasts depends on the software.

Also interesting will be the arrival of NX. If this thing is any good, it might slow down the other 2. Maybe Xbox more than PS4.

no difference with what? last gen they were evenly matched with the 360 having an early slight lead (because it launched earlier) and ps3 having a slight lead later on. this gen is just the ps4 shitting on the bone from waaay up high.

ps3 had no games worth anything to begin with either. My first last gen console was a launch ps3 but i ended up with a 360. Sold the ps3 a year after launch and scored big cause of the ps2 compatibility.

Even if its a 2:1 ratio the sales output is high considering last gen. This goes both for sony and MS. Its win/win in my book and next gen there are so much more to live up to. Again win/win.

I expect that the people currently buying these consoles have internet or close to 99% of people do. Otherwise how can you spend $400 on something and not be able to afford internet?
$400 would get you like 8 months of decent internet here in north Minneapolis.

There is a pretty big difference between a kid with a part-time job making a one-time purchase of $400 and a family making a $600-a-year commitment for something that the parents in charge don't feel they really need. Lots of people at my high school had 360's but no broadband at home for this very reason; they had part-time jobs and could afford a 360, but their parents wouldn't jump in on the whole internet thing.

Considering the terrible release, the terrible controller, the terrible UI, the terrible price and the arrogant schmucks, I would say that these guesstimates are remarkable.

The xbox one with the new UI, better price, the new controller and no kinect should have been day one.

That's a great point.

Nintendo is always a wild card when it comes to console releases. Really going to be interesting to see the monthly console sales numbers a few months after the NX is released.

what? the controller is fine

PS4 - 40 million
X1 - 20 million

No.

PS4 - 36m (Jan 1st- Official)
XB1 - 19m (rumored 18m + 1m extra for unaccounted Xbox during past month - guesstimate)
WiiU - 13m (last official count 10m as of August 1st? - guesstimate)

The bumpers were terrible, the amount of flex in the controller was terrible. The omission of a 3.5mm jack was insane. The whole point of ease of using a headset was one of the reason why people played on the xbox. Very few people even use a mic anymore because of it. I had to solder a damn connector myself to get my turtle beach headset to work. If it was 2003 no worries, but in 2013 people already HAD high end microphones / headsets.

I have 4 xbox one controllers, all of them have issues with randomly getting unsynced and then disconnecting during play. Why mess up something which worked great on the xbox 360.

The elite controller and the new one with 3.5mm jack fixed some of these issues, but damn, why did they mess with it to begin with. To make $15 on an adapter?

Dude, the controller is great. The first itteration's problem was the stupid plastic thing you need to use headphones but other than that, i love the controller. UI at first was really bad i agree and yeah price... but it did include a good camera.

Xbox One sales should reach overall original Xbox sales sometime by at least 2017 (I'm thinking they will late this year though). It would be a decent PR statement to make in my opinion since the gen is still pretty young.

Ok i can agree with your complains. Headset support was really bad and worst is Microsoft never built a headset comparable to the Gold Headset on PS3/PS4 that is easy to use and plug and play.

The thing i love the most about the Xbox One controller is the sticks and triggers. They nailed that part imo. The rest is kinda subjective but i get the complains. It wasn't perfect for sure.

Holy shit, that was my bad. What is the world wide figure?

Edit : nvm

We knew this already didn't we? Just the other day Microsoft announced that the Xbox one is selling better than the Xbox 360 did at is stage in the cycle. Someone on here worked out it meant at least 17.6 million...

I love the Xbox One controller. And if you can justify the cost to yourself, the Elite controller is amazing; Sony needs one.
I even like the new Xbox One dashboard.

But its hard for me to buy some third-party games for my XB1 when my PS4 is better utilized. Chivalry = 30fps on XB1 versus 60fps on PS4.

Xbox needs a game-changer. Wonder if PC-on-XboxOne would be help; would love to see it happen.

The elite controller is awesome, pure bliss, better than scuff and any other controller I have tried, and some of these designs (new bumpers, less flex) is in the new controller with 3.5mm jack.

Anyways, kudos to MS for doing a 180 and selling what appears to be 18M.

agreed, 100%. that shows either how strong gaming is in U.S or how xbone isn't that far behind imo (not that it'll ever catch up though)

Please don't refer to it as "xbone". If you were being sincere you would say X1, XB1 or Xbox One. A game console deserves more respect than that.

I expect that the people currently buying these consoles have internet or close to 99% of people do. Otherwise how can you spend $400 on something and not be able to afford internet?

They likely do have some form of Internet, but it might not be sufficient enough internet to play a console online and download 15GB updates like a 1MB Wifi connection which is all you need to have your smartphone or tablet work online.

I did get it, it's the best controller I have ever held in my hands. By a long shot.

MS took a $1BN hit on the 360 red ring of death issues. In 2016 dollars, they could probably take a 2-3BN hit on the xbox one and do an xbox 1.5 with 2-3 times the gfx power for a $100 trade in. That would be a game changer.
