Xbox One at 18 million (activated units)

Please don't refer to it as "xbone". If you were being sincere you would say X1, XB1 or Xbox One. A game console deserves more respect than that.

If Microsoft has ceased releasing sell through figures then you know the situation for them is pretty dire.

People love trends and jumping on bandwagons and owning the 'it' thing. Once the collective consciousness is made aware of a 2:1 or greater sales ratio, it will soon be 3:1 and then 4:1...irrespective of how many great games Microsoft release.

Makes me wonder which element is more important to overall sell through figures: herd mentality or quality hardware and software. Maybe the latter generates the former.

Of course, you know this does not translate to gaming, or anything really. There are different market conditions for different markets, and clearly at least in the US market both systems are driving growth and splitting the market somewhat evenly with obvious benefit to the PS4

Expecting the gen to last 15-20 years?

Xbox One is doing fine and people here freaking out loool

Console will sell 30m by this year´s end or more, 30m active users is alot, buying dlc and stuff, sure is not 60 milion like ps4 will probably boast but it is a very respectfull number.

Since this will be a very long gen (2019 earliest) we still have 4 years left of sales, 60/70m when all its said and done will be amazing for Xbox One since all the bad things that happened to the brand, i was expecting less.

Ps4 will end with >100milion yes and will be the real winner but Xbox will have amazing games, a big fanbase and best of all, great exclusives!

there is no way it will sell 30 million by end of year. It will have to nearly double yearly sales for that to happen.

Xbox One deserves more units sold.

No, they don't. The worse this generation is for them, the more we can expect from the next.

No, it won't. It has to go from 8 to 9 million to 11 million.

Xbox One will be lucky to hit 50 million unlessential this generation lasts another 5 or 6 years. It is doing less than 10 million a year right now.

I think it funny how they have no problem announcing some halfway concrete numbers for their exclusive software sales, but still nothing for hardware.

Great numbers for XB1. They really managed to turn it around after the rocky start. Best OS updates in the industry. Competition is a good thing.

EDIT: This is for US only, right?
Everyone quoted it wrong. There is 18 million active units not 18 million activated units. Microsoft determines an active unit as being used within the last 28 days. So it is most likely slightly more than 18 million.
Posting this again. If the 18 million number is accurate, then that is 18 million Xbox One's that were updated to W10 used in the last 28 days.
Looks like they had a good holiday and shrunk the gap
Comedy gold in this thread.

Autocorrect or a cboat impression? :p

I'm not suggesting these numbers are exact, but do you think MS doesnt have analytics that tell them exactly the number of unique devices that have touched their services over the last 28 days?

Sure they do.

I'd bet money that they don't have exactly 200 million devices, or that it broke down to an even 180/18/2 million.

That just screams rounding.

And where I've worked, unless it's an official document (press release, shareholder review, customer presentation, etc), rounding is _very_ liberal. Like it's not at all uncommon to round 41% to 50% because it's still "in the ballpark" and makes math easier.

B...bu...but..BUT what's with all those show-room Xbones at retail world-wide. Those have to be activated and upgraded, too.

For the love of god, why can't MS simply release sales figures. This kind of BS just makes them look like complete jerks. And us too.

Not too bad really considering the terrible start. They can probably get out of the generation with maybe ~50 million sold tops. Once a slim version comes into play and cheaper prices etc.

They must be kicking themselves for handing Sony half of their market share, idiots. Marc Whiten and chums thought every household in America was going to buy one lol.

So anyway for the next Ars Technica article about console sales is Kyle Orland going to change the horizontal axis to 'activated units' for the XBOne?

No, because 18.5M consoles sold to consumers is as high as you can go as far as reasonable guestimations are concerned.
How can you infer this with certainty, when we do not even have the December NPD, which is the most important part of the puzzle left to us by the benevolent MAU prophet that is MS?

LOL
The guy is clown, he is so upset that Playstation is beating the xbox one so badly that he gets delusional and thinks people really care about what he says. I really cant believe that there are grown mean like him that act like that in real life. Him and that Mooch character have got to be the dumbest fan boys on the internet, and the are GROWN MEN...smh

I actually thought for about a year or so that he was a 15 year old rampant fanboy who kept popping up on my timeline. Shocked me when I found out he was a grown man.

I have a Xboner and all my friends have Xboners.

We love talking about our Xbones.

Lets us call it what we want, thanks.

Anyway, lower than I would have thought compared to the PS4 but not crazy considering how much better Sony's console has been doing.

They have already declared they won't release sales figures anymore, so I wouldn't expect them.

Statements like "X% up" without any frame of reference sound so much better than releasing actual sales figures and thereby officially admitting your product is getting outsold 2:1.

Sony used to group all Playstation sales into one figure, so you can't exactly blame a company who's in second place for presenting their numbers in the best way possible.

I wonder how crapgamer will spin this since the official PlayStation numbers earlier in the week had no evidence at all according to him.

If not dire then it sure isn't as good as they'd like it to be... what other reason is there for them to stop releasing sales numbers?

Obviously things are not going as planned this generation. And Spencer's declaration for not releasing sold-through numbers anymore is directly related to that.

But I'd hardly call the situation dire.

Comedy gold in this thread.
The article states that out of the 220 million devices which were online in the last 28 days, 18 million were Xbox's. So there's also the Xbox's which haven't upgraded and the ones which simply weren't online.

How many is that is no idea. I don't see how it was comedy gold?

Because that article is a whole bunch of crap.

Xbox One active users probably around 17.x million. Anything above and Mary Jo Foley's inside source would not hesitate to say "over 18m" or "more than 18m". It's also hard to entertain the idea that a sizeable number have not once turned on their system the whole of December, especially since (a) it's the most active time of year (b) users are enjoying "the greatest games lineup in Xbox history" (c) the system doubles as a media centre.

1 million people who literally are letting their Xbox One gather dust, at a push. That would put sales at 18.x million units sold through.

Because that article is a whole bunch of crap.
The person who released that information has been close to Microsoft for many years, I'm not stating its definitely true, more so, its not a 'bunch of crap'. I'm very inclined to believe it.

The 200mil number is official also.
