Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

Well, the unpatched run is both full of long load times and eliminates most of the skill involved by power leveling via a dupe glitch, which combined make it a very boring run to watch. The any% and all bosses runs for the current patch are way more interesting because they are optimizing on risk vs reward and are like watching a kaizo Mario run because the player is doing what seems like the impossible.

Yeah, compared against Dark Souls runs in years past, the Bloodborne run was just underwhelming.

The most upsetting thing about FF1 and Bloodborne having the worst possible categories is that it kills their chances of showing up at future events with better categories.

I didn't have the chance yesterday to say good bye but I will now, this is the first AGDQ or SGDQ that I watch with you guys and it was amazing, I had a blast on the chat it was pretty fun, thank you for everything guys and gals :D I wish you the best

GAF chat was fun this year, reminder for SGDQ we will use the same chat.

(Next GDQ event no waifu talk allowed.)

So don't leave it.

I'll be making the SGDQ thread, unless someone has some clever ideas and wants to do it.

Does anybody have a good link/links to the VOD list from previous GDQs (or anything that compiles them)?

Indeed GAF chat was a lot of fun, looking forward to SDGQ.
Alright TUSR, looking forward to your SDGQ thread :D

the guy(mitchflowerpower?) who ran mario kaizo and mario bros 3 was actually super cool, just caught a segment of the computer playing mario bros 3 and he was on the couch and in awe :D

Hmm, you're right. I wonder which it depends on more, runners or games. Here is all the data in case people are interested:

Great runs either way. Loved Mew and truck segment.

Based on that data, AGDQ 2015 had a single donation of $200,000, so that probably had a lot to do with its high total. As someone else mentioned, there was a humble bundle running at the same time that went towards AGDQ 2015, so that may have been the source of it.

The $200,000 donation was from Humble Bundle.

If I'm a person that has been sick for a year and a half, I'm not sure I'd be showing up to a place that I know to be notorious for the spread of illness among people like a GDQ.

I do hope Mike is feeling better and whatever was wrong with him is now over. Dude get a bad rap because of reasons and everyone loves drama but it hasn't been the same without his super long shout out session after a GDQ

Wow, that current run this guy does is awesome to watch. Like night and day compared to last nights boring glitchfest.

Yeah Ela is a great runner. I was addicted to his channel back when he was doing Dark Souls 1 and 2.

Do we have a list up of the best runs yet? Showed my wife that Kaizo Mario run and she was amazed.

Yes, here

edit: now watching the Mario Maker race. Man this is lots of fun. Really need to play MM at some point.

Watching the Awful Games Done Quick segment now. This is pretty good. And Lagoon is hilarious especially with the commentary.

Yeah GAFchat was great! So what happened to the "SONYGAF" chat? Is that one dead? I think the new room is more appropriately named, since we use it for a variety of events.

Great to see some all bosses getting some love.

I am catching up on MM 100% because I fell asleep during it, and the commentary is so good. I have no idea what happened but a lot of the commentary except TASBot and FF4 seemed to drop like a rock during the last day even during the more interesting technical runs.

It was a good time GAF. Those of us who endured the Final Fantasy run are most likely better people for it.

The Blast Corps run had one of the old Rare guys commentating, it was great if you are interested in what working with Nintendo in the 90s was like.

Axiom Verge had Tom Happ (developer, composer, artist, designer) and Dan Adelman (Marketing and stuff?) commenting on the run too.

Edit: I was gonna edit this post I swear

They announced an all-time high in viewership numbers during the mario block, and it seemed to stay pretty consistently high.

Seems like the problem was getting the viewers to donate. Could be the incentives were too weak, or the charity less appealing, or fatigue from giving money, or worry about the money going to the organizers instead of the charity.

My guess is primarily the donation incentives. Feels like everything got met so easily.

Could be that the Mario segment brought in a lot of young people who, for obvious reasons, can't donate? Mario's still popular with kids right?

No idea what the SONYGAF chat was, group chats are strange things.

This group is public, anyone can invite, and it won't be going anywhere.

I particularly don't donate because I do not like PCF and I'm sure there's others that probably feel the same way. I also think it has to do with the donation incentives, though. The prizes are awesome, yes, but a lot of the glitches that were donation incentives weren't really that interesting. Finally, it may have to do with fatigue of actually watching these sorts of marathons. Is twice a year too much? Maybe. I myself only watch AGDQ, though.

So did AGDQ make anyone impulse buy?
... I ended up buying Azure Striker Gunvolt because of that race, lol
No impulse buy, but I finally installed Final Fantasys that I haven't played yet, such as 4.

The Blast Corps run had one of the old Rare guys commentating, it was great if you are interested in what working with Nintendo in the 90s was like.
Yeah, I haven't seen anyone mention it yet but the Blast Corps run was really nice. Not the most exciting necessarily but the conversation with the dev was good and the credits skip absolutely blew my mind.

The SM RB run is fun to watch itself... but holy damn the runner+couch zero energy are making me sleepy

@dat lava section was clutch

Caught up on the Mario Maker 'race' and team Trihex got destroyed, wow. There was a lot more skill at play in the other team, some hard sections were pulled of in a couple or even one try. Very impressive to see.

I hope they do another Mario Maker race at SGDQ, but I hope they just do 2v2. The players having to play musical chairs the whole time made it so hard to watch, and probably made it way harder for them to play.

It really is -- and I don't think people understand just how difficult a lot of those platinum times are. Basically, any of the ones he wasn't glitching past (either due to some crazy movement or collision abuse) are absurdly tight -- to the point where the EU and JP versions of the game have looser requirements for all of the medals (but in turn, the Z button exploit was patched out). The fact that he gets all of the ones that he can with about 2-3 restarts total is really damn good. It's a seriously impressive run, and having one of the developers of the game on commentary just made it that much better.

Spent an extra day at the venue because 1) no way I was driving home on little sleep at 3am, and 2) I helped the arcade vendors pack up since I was still there. Enjoyed my time there in person. Sort of regretting not taking at least some time off work so I could be there for some of the runs I really wanted to see. Would definitely go again; not sure if I can pull off SGDQ since the timing of it conflicts with everything this year but I don't see why I wouldn't do AGDQ again next year.

Id love to attend, but the Canadian Peso is still too weak, and flights are insane from where I live.

My Goldeneye buddies also haven't been attending these anymore.

I would like to speedrun Arkham asylum one day at a GDQ but since I'm not in America and have no passport it's not going to happen any time soon.

This year's AGDQ did less than last year's and also what SGDQ 2015 did. I'm surprised.

The whole donation incentive system doesn't work when event sponsors are allowed to donate for incentives. Why should I donate for killing the animals if The Yetee can come in and put their shirt sale money on saving the animals?

This is the first year I didn't donate anything. Although my donations have always been 5-10 bucks so it doesn't mean much.

it would have been much closer if not for that stupid wall jump level
I don't know why they made a super clutch level like that for a race, other levels were nice because once you figured out the execution wasn't as tight, but this was bound to create a gap

and yeah 4 players is too much imo, the rotation looked annoying for players

There was quite a few good runs, good demonstration of skills. I'd say it takes a lot more skill to speedrun than being good at fighting games (but that's just me).

That said, fuck the GDQ events
