David Bowie Passed Away

I just saw Ice Cube do a guest bit on The Bachelor shilling his new movie. On any other day that would be the saddest thing to happen to a great musician.

This is really neat. Bryan Fuller just posted Bowie's response to his first piece of American fan mail.

Finally made my way to Blackstar after a day of listening to his entire catalog and while it's going to take some time for it all to sink in I'm in awe of what it represents. The cryptic honesty in the lyrics, the dark songwriting and jazzy musicianship, the act of turning your impending death into art.

The video for Lazarus alone is incredibly haunting and powerful, amazing song that ranks up there with his best stuff. Left us with a great album, what an artist.

I'm waiting on some good tribute vids to show up. Wasn't to shocked when I heard the news earlier when since I knew he had cancer but still :(

Damn, this whole show is excellent. David Bowie and Trent Reznor together was such a treat. Love how their songs were mixed together for this tour.

I saw this show in person. Absolutely amazing concert from start to finish that left a lasting impression on me. I got to see NIN a ton of times since then, but sadly never got to see Bowie again. He scaled back his touring not long after this and then stopped completely.

My introduction to David Bowie was through direct influence of my uncle. He was also a musician (albeit considerably less successful) and when he saw my interest and aptitude for music he took it upon himself to further my education. One day when I was about 4 or 5 my dad and I went to visit my uncle at his recording studio. Now, in reality it was just some shabby studio in Los Angeles, but to my young eyes it was pure magic. We listened in on a song they were recording and when they took a break my uncle showed me around and let me try out a couple of the instruments. Again, magic. Then, when the band filed back in, my uncle wanted to play a song for me. That song was Heroes. From that moment on I absolutely loved the music of David Bowie. Because of that one experience I studied music and while my studies were more of the classical variety it started out with my uncle introducing me to David Bowie.

Then, yesterday, I'm just about to call my sister and wish her a happy birthday when my mom calls. She tells me that my uncle had died. I was sad , of course, but it wasn't a huge shock as he had been battling cancer for a while. So, understandably, yesterday was a little somber for me despite the Hawks win. I'm just about to wrap up and go to bed when I see the headline "David Bowie Dead; He Was 69" and I had to read it twice because my eyes refused to read it correctly the first time.

Today I'm talking to my parents and we're joking about how my uncle was probably trying to delay dying so he could walk through the Pearly Gates with Bowie. You know, trying to keep it light looking at the silver lining and all that. Then just a little while ago I'm doing the dishes while listening to my local classic rock station read what other notable people have tweeted and then they cap it off with a Bowie classic: Heroes. The memories come flooding back and I can't help it. Elbow deep in soapy dish water I just start sobbing. Two of the most important people in my life died of cancer on the same day.

Rest in Peace Mr. Bowie. Ashes to Ashes.

His 2nd to last album (the one before the one released last week) was great and the first time I ever actually sat down and really liked his work. Never got around to digging back into his back catalogue after that but I think I should.

RIP.

I believe I first got introduced to David Bowie's music around 2009-ish after looking up the music for My Life Aquatic.

Not sure if anyone's aware, but Bowie was in the niche(cult classic) PS2 game Amplitude.

Uses clips in the background and everything. RIP, it was one heck of a track('Everyone Says Hi').

That was my favorite track in the game. Also my favorite version of the song. Hard to believe it's been almost 13 years since that game came out. Where did the time go?

Spent most of the day listening to his music. Particularly his later material. "Bring Me the Disco King", "Strangers When We Meet" "Dead Man Walking" "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" "Little Wonder" all the remixes of "I'm afraid of Americans". What a tremendous talent.

When I bought lunch today, I mentioned Bowie to the woman behind the counter. She said she was a huge fan, and at some young age (11-13?) wrote him a letter asking him to marry her.

She included some pennies in the envelope so he could call her.

That's both creepy and adorable.

Sorry if this has been brought up in this thread already, or if there is a separate thread for it, but here it goes:

I wonder if a few of us Bowie fans can start a "Bowie" black ribbon movement, similar to what was done for Nintendo's Iwata back when he passed away. I would volunteer for I don't even have Photoshop installed on my computer, and otherwise have no other photo editing skills.

Thoughts?

I'd be down for it. Not that either of our avatars aren't tribute enough though, lol.

Agreed on the avatars being good enough tribute.

But, get out of here with your Berlin trilogy-era avatar nonsense. My Thin White Duke one is clearly superior.

sarcasm. Bowie was always awesome, no matter what he was doing.

This man has had a tremendous impact in my musical tastes, and is probably my favorite "solo" act alongside Bob Dylan. (Interestingly enough, Bowie himself was a fan of Dylan, as evidenced by, among other things, his "Song for Bob Dylan" from the awesome album Hunky Dory).

I would say "I've been listening to his music all day as a tribute." But I'm not going to say that, because I listen to his music... quite often.

You can thank your lucky stars I'm not using the proper "Heroes" cover because that's the greatest photo of a human being ever made.

Pursuant to the earlier point, here's something I quickly threw together in GIMP. First time doing this, so might be rubbish:

Thanks I think it's great!

Wow at ITunes right now

31 songs in the top 200
14 albums in the top 25
25 albums in the top 75
Number 1 and 2 albums with Blackstar and Best of Bowie
33 albums in the top 200

Must be some records going down.

I know this always happens when artists die, but this is crazy levels of people reflecting back on his catalogue and the moments of their life he influenced.
