Must be some records going down.

I know this always happens when artists die, but this is crazy levels of people reflecting back on his catalogue and the moments of their life he influenced.

As an aside, I get irritated when people sort of sniff at this kind of attitude, of people flooding to buy records of recently deceased artists. For some reason, they find it contemptuous. But, we take our artists for granted, particularly our legacy ones, who for many older members here have been the musical soundtrack of their lives, so now is the perfect time to go crazy and listen to all those wonderful songs.

Not to mention the sheer scope and depth of his back catalogue, it took me months, if not years to mine all those songs and discover tracks that initially I may have dismissed. Maybe, I'll discover one or two more in the coming days.

Yeah most people are not buying these songs or albums to become a part of a trend.

Sure that happens, but cool if new people are checking the artist out.

Just about everyone has a Bowie moment from their life. For me it was probably originally hearing Space Oddity, then watching Labyrinth, and then years later his collaboration with Trent Reznor and his excellent song on the Lost Highway soundtrack. And then it was playing his songs on Rock Band where he clicked in a bigger way for me.

Of course there was the Nirvana Unplugged cover along the way, and the Wallflowers cover of Heroes. He was always popping up at influential moments in my life.

A family friend who was an assistant engineer on his last two albums returned to Dallas over the holidays, and I bugged the hell out of her asking her questions about the recently announced album. Turns out she knew about how sick he was and kept it secret from her own family. She ended up doing backing vocals on the album, and as far as I know was the last person to sing in studio with him. Super cool but sad stuff.

Wow! That's a cool story; I know I would have hounded her to the ends of the earth with pointless questions about him. It's also cool that he surrounded himself with loyal people who didn't sell him out for a tabloid headline with his cancer battle. It's clear now that plenty of people in the business knew about it.

Also, speaking of Space Oddity, I've always loved this version of the song, performed at his 50th birthday bash; it's acoustic and a little more downbeat and melancholic, but it's such a lovely, stripped down version of the song. I remember buying a bootleg version of the whole concert in a little record shop in Manchester.

Funny Thing,
David Bowie was supposed to play Hannibal's Uncle in Season Two of Hannibal but it never happened :(

Damn. =/

I think I'm going to watch this movie with my girlfriend, who's a big Bowie fan.

On a side note, it seems some in my FB circles, not close friends though, are having childish retaliatory tantrums, because Bowie's death has seemingly taken the spotlight away from Lemmy's.

This was just posted there by a certain metal label.

EDIT: On a further inspection, it seems I misunderstood the point of the image. =)

Just woken up after a bizarre night of disturbed dreams.

I'm feeling quite unwell anyway (stomach ulcer) and watched the videos for Blackstar and Lazarus before going to sleep. Honestly pretty damn creepy and disturbing, finding it hard to shake the images of the 'twitchy' movements of the dancers from my head.

Think I should probably give the album a little break for a while, I do find it incredibly eerie now that the 'curtains have been opened', so to speak.

Space Oddity Live

I feel terrible I asked her if he was going to appear in the new Zoolander film, and she was just like, "Probably Not." :(

That video link is awesome.

My introduction to David Bowie was through direct influence of my uncle. He was also a musician (albeit considerably less successful) and when he saw my interest and aptitude for music he took it upon himself to further my education. One day when I was about 4 or 5 my dad and I went to visit my uncle at his recording studio. Now, in reality it was just some shabby studio in Los Angeles, but to my young eyes it was pure magic. We listened in on a song they were recording and when they took a break my uncle showed me around and let me try out a couple of the instruments. Again, magic. Then, when the band filed back in, my uncle wanted to play a song for me. That song was Heroes. From that moment on I absolutely loved the music of David Bowie. Because of that one experience I studied music and while my studies were more of the classical variety it started out with my uncle introducing me to David Bowie.

Then, yesterday, I'm just about to call my sister and wish her a happy birthday when my mom calls. She tells me that my uncle had died. I was sad , of course, but it wasn't a huge shock as he had been battling cancer for a while. So, understandably, yesterday was a little somber for me despite the Hawks win. I'm just about to wrap up and go to bed when I see the headline "David Bowie Dead; He Was 69" and I had to read it twice because my eyes refused to read it correctly the first time.

Today I'm talking to my parents and we're joking about how my uncle was probably trying to delay dying so he could walk through the Pearly Gates with Bowie. You know, trying to keep it light looking at the silver lining and all that. Then just a little while ago I'm doing the dishes while listening to my local classic rock station read what other notable people have tweeted and then they cap it off with a Bowie classic: Heroes. The memories come flooding back and I can't help it. Elbow deep in soapy dish water I just start sobbing. Two of the most important people in my life died of cancer on the same day.

Rest in Peace Mr. Bowie. Ashes to Ashes.
My condolences to you and yours. What a touching story.

Today has been the shittiest day I've had in years, trying to avoid it but, here it is. Everything that could go wrong pretty much went wrong.

RIP Bowie... A soundtrack to a huge part of my life.

I still don't get how his death seems like it was planned so perfectly..

new album releases and is seemingly awesome, his death opens peoples eyes to hidden meaning in the lyrics and images in music video

sends basically a thank you and fair well email to Brian Eno last week

Last photos of him two days before death looking fly and looking in good health really

last accounthis official twitter followed was God before he died

I'm probably missing some things but seems weird man..

Seems like a man going on his own terms.

He knew he was going to die, so he had time to plan it.

A David Bowie biopic would be awesome but incredibly difficult to pull off. I can only think of one actor that can transform like Bowie...

I'm so sorry for your losses, I can't imagine what that would have felt like happening around the same time let alone the same day. May they both rest in peace.

You can thank your lucky stars I'm not using the proper "Heroes" cover because that's the greatest photo of a human being ever made.

Pursuant to the earlier point, here's something I quickly threw together in GIMP. First time doing this, so might be rubbish:

Dude, this is awesome!

Now, uhhhh... How do I add that to my avatar? Back in the Iwata thread, a couple of kind souls were the ones modding everyone's avatar with the ribbon.

PS: love everything about "Heroes". The cover, the music. Although when it comes to the instrumental stuff, I'm a bit partial to Low over "Heroes".

Blackstar is a great album, btw. The title track, which I first heard when the video was initially released, has now taken on a completely different meaning.

He truly went out on his own terms. I consider that album a love letter to his fans :(

I'm getting choked up just thinking about it.

This happened when Michael Jackson died. Over 20 MJ singles in the Australia Top 50 charts

They're your Heroes. Thanks for the story. I also took my nephew under my wings to show him the awe of music. He has become a kick-ass guitar player and I'm damn proud.

Rest in peace Bowie.

Started listening to Black Star after hearing today's news. Lazarus and Black Star are phenomenal. You can't help but be in awe that someone 69 years old and fighting cancer manages to create such an amazing parting gift to the world. Releasing it on his birthday, and maintaining his fight against his illness until after his final work has been released. Nothing but respect and admiration.

He turned his death into art.

I'm sure its been done before, somehow and some way, but I sure as hell can't recall ever seeing or hearing anything like it done.

I mean the video for Lazarus is pretty much a man saying goodbye and expressing his final flare of art before he passes.

Man I've been going back over his back catalogue and I had forgotten how great Diamond Dogs is. The sweet thing trilogy of songs is masterful. He really was a truly unique and special artist.

Is it nice in your snow storm, freezing your brain?
Do you think that your face looks the same?
Then let it beeeeeeeeeeeeee, it's all I ever wanted
It's a street with a deal, and a taste
It's got claws, it's got me, it's got youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

When he landed on this planet he left a crater, man. His impact will be felt forever. He left his mark on earth for the rest of time.

I've been thinking a lot about his legacy, and there have been performance artists before who had as much bravado, maybe songwriters on the same level (maybe), but no one that combined them so effortlessly. But that's not even it, just how..confident isn't even strong enough, just how...pure? he was. There was no hesitation, no shame, only a force of will so strong that it rubbed off on all of us. Man.

Great article about Bowienet here by the Guardian. If you're unaware bowienet was a short lived ISP that David Bowie set up so his fans could get internet access. He totally understood what a big deal the internet was going to be for music distribution waaay before anyone else.

Had the opening riff to Heroes stuck in my head for the last 24 hours, whenever I hum it near anyone (even strangers) we strike up conversation about Bowie.

I was in Brixton last night, was very cool. People were setting off fireworks and climbing on top of houses and shit. Don't know if any of that made it online

I cam't get over how good "I Can't Give Everything Away" is. To think that his "final" song would easily become one of my favorites. The guy was such a talent.

As someone who never took the time to fully appreciate or listen to the entirety of David Bowie's albums, I just purchased a few on iTunes (Low & Ziggy Stardust) and I am truly in love. I feel terrible that it took me this long to listen to all of his music, but what better time to pay tribute?

I had the song on repeat last night. It's a beautiful song.

Diamond Dogs was my first Bowie album. Not the strongest but it's still a very solid album with some great tracks (Sweet Thing - Candidate will never leave my favourite tracks) and it will always be special to me as it was my introduction to his music, but also because of it being a good album that actually seems to be overlooked a bit I feel.

I've been waiting to hear Davey Havok's reaction as he is the reason I'm interested in Bowie in the first place. He was such an influence on Davey in many facets of his life and their connection and similarities and AFI's cover of Ziggy Stardust was a bridge for discussion between my mother and I (she was a Bowie fan) just as Bowie's collab with Bing was a bridge to her own parents.

Edit: So he did say something but the Twitter app won't load for me on mobile.
