The Witness - Release Date Trailer, coming 26th January 2016

The Witness |OT| Myst was a bad game. Hopefully this one isn't.

You're a bad game and you should feel bad.

Myst was pretty cool for its time. I def felt immersed in that world, despite being pretty much a powerpoint presentation. Even got into the lore a bit, I remember wanting to get the books, although I never did.

I'm probably being dumb and the answer is already out there, but what do you reckon the title is referring to?

Are we, the player, the Witness?

What are we witnessing exactly, a big event on the island?

Is the Witness another character we meet on the island? Is he or she going to witness me making love to an animal behind a tree?

pretty sure that's gonna be the big revelation

my guess is the game is about witnessing the hidden greatness of humanity, or about accepting the decay of humanity and the island is like the Evangelion i.e. everlasting evidence of our short existence

The books are amazing and still worth a read IMO. Start with the book of tianna.

I suspect this will not be explicitly answered and will be largely up to interpretation. Although he tried that with Braid and slipped with some heavy handedness so we'll see. Death of the author and all that, sure, but it didn't feel subtle at all to me.

▽ I think Myst Me is gonna take it but that is a solid pun.

I am weirdly excited for this game even though I don't think I will either like it or be smart enough to get every far into it. I always felt like Braid was a really cool exploration of the limitations of language to communicate.

I really hope I haven't had some (or all) of this game inadvertantly spoiled for me quite a while ago.
I don't know if anyone else on here saw it or remembers it, but there were a batch of (official?) screenshots from the game released a while back, and one particular shot looked a little um......different when viewed a certain way.
At first it just seemed cool, I hope that's all it is and not one of the big reveals or something.

I know what you're talking about, but I don't think that's even scratching the surface of what's hidden in this game.

Not sure how to feel about this. Jon blow saying there'd be no music on the game really killed my hype. He's making the same mistake the myst folk did by thinking no music would make the game more immersive, while its the oposite, music made the game much better.

Hope he changed his mind

According to the PS Blog post #5 and reply in post #5.1:

Mr. Blow, who’s the composer behind the game’s music? And will I be able to purchase the soundtrack separately (on, say, bandcamp)?

Jonathan Blow 17 September, 2015 @ 8:45 pm 5.1

The composer is Zoe Keating; the song is from her album Into The Trees:

There was a link posted 4 pages back with an extremely long interview and look at who Jonathon Blow is. Extremely interesting read for those who may or may not like him.

Having said that, the person interviewing him may have given away what the entire game is about (which if true really sucks for me and anyone else who read the article).

again POTENTIAL SPOILERS.

I don't know about that, while Braid was heavy handed in some respects, I felt like there was deeper meaning to be found underneath, just as I suspect the Witness will be. Like look at this interpretation of Braid from an article in 2012.

One night in his apartment, with the lights of San Francisco twinkling for miles outside his windows, I warned Blow that I was about to do something that might aggravate him: I was going to tell him what I thought Braid was about, and he could do with that whatever he wanted.

“Okay,” he replied with a half smirk, leaning back in his chair.

“So obviously there’s the theme of the creation of the atomic bomb,” I began.

“I think you can make a very strong case that that is an unambiguous reference,” he replied, which I interpreted as the Blovian equivalent of Yes.

“But I think what has frustrated you about people’s interpretations of Braid is that the atom bomb itself is a metaphor for a certain kind of knowledge,” I continued. “You’ve been chasing some deep form of understanding all your life, and what I think you’ve found is that questing after that knowledge brings alienation with it. The further you’ve gone down that road, the further it’s taken you from other people. So the knowledge is ultimately destructive to your life, just like the atom bomb was—it’s a kind of truth that has a cataclysmic impact. You thought chasing that knowledge would make you happy, but like Tim, part of you eventually wished you could turn back time and do things over again.”

Blow remained silent.

“Does that make sense?,” I asked.

“Yep, yep.”

“So?”

He smiled.

“Well, I would say that I would not be frustrated at all with that interpretation.”

I think there is a whole lot more to Braid then the heavy handed stuff. The article this quotes from really digs into the design philosphy behind Blow's games, it's fascinating http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/05/the-most-dangerous-gamer/308928/?single_page=true. Be forewarned, there is some Witness info in there, like what some of the audio logs are about. It was written 3 years ago though, so who knows what's changed. I will say it made me 100% more excited for the game.

I loved Braid so much I said I would definitely pick this up.

I have seen pictures of the island and a couple other things, but other than that I don't know anything about the title at all. FPS, Third person, is it a GODUS type game like Molyneux did a while back I have no idea.

1. Should I continue going in blind or watch the trailer?
2. PC or PS4? My PC should run it better than my PS4 but any other compelling reason/content to not do that?

Cheers :)

That's only in reference to the music in the trailer; there is no music in the actual game.

I think Blow has said that there's almost no music. So I'm guessing one of the audio diaries or something has a little music. But otherwise, nope, no ambient score.

Fair point. Didn't mean to imply that it had no depth. Just that I wouldn't be surprised if Blow closed out the game with something like "THE WITNESS IS YOU!"
