Valkyria Azure Revolution Extended Trailer [Soriku-approved topics only]

The character designs look super generic next to the original game. They're much closer to standard anime videogame designs. They're not, like, bad, but they're really standard-fare.

Also why does everyone have swords? Is the militaristic thing just gone now?

Is there an acceptable way to make a character with large breasts or is it automatically bad design? The people criticizing it try their harderst to reduce the character to just that, which is kind of ironic.

Really weird how this happens in every Valkyria thread.

It looks cartoonish and silly. They're free to design their characters like this, but they still look crap and people are always going to criticise it because it looks crap.

I figured we wouldn't get far until the boob-shaming of well-endowed women started.

It's not boob-shaming. It's being annoyed that Sega looked at Selvaria and went "we have to go bigger next time".

Selvaria was a great character despite her design. Might be the same here. Might also be silly pandering. But the odds don't look too great.

Though this design still doesn't quite succeed in that regard - the official art of Selvaria posted on the last page was even larger. I'm sure they could have gone with something far more voluminous if they really wanted to impress fans of the series.

That's not how Selvaria looked in the game though. They just cranked it up for whatever that art was drawn for.

exactly. that was kind of my point.
The fact that people get so upset means they're doing something right
criticise it however much you like, but in the end, maybe this just isnt made for you. And that's fine

based on what?

This game doesn't seem to be made for Valkyria Chronicles fans in any way. It's sword and sorcery combat instead of military combat, the character designs are in a different universe than the first game, and it's not even an SRPG. Why did they even put the Valkyria name on it?

Character designer this time is Hiro Kiyohara? Sexy Selvaria-type characters seem like new ground for him based on his portfolio, whereas Raita had a lot of prior experience with his doujinshi work (lol).

To comment on something other than not-Selvaria, that song isn't too interesting. Sarah has an amazing voice but I don't really like it when she goes all soprano, I prefer the songs with a bit more range. Hopefully there will be something more upbeat, and I wouldn't mind some of her own instrumental compositions alongside Mitsuda's.

Because it's a known name? You have a point, but I don't really see why it matters. It's just a name.

That's news to me. As huge VC fan I'm ok with this setting and like it more with each material shown.

These weapons and the character design look terrible. Especially the latter is a huge disappointment after VC designs. But I really like the look of the game itself. Heavy but pretty filters. Overall I'm still sceptical... is it really going to be an action RPG? I would really like to get some turn-based combat.

Big boobs are fine, but I don't like the outfit. The "boob socks" on the outfit (in combination with the corset) are what makes the character look ridiculous. Clothes like this don't even make sense in real life.

At this point you just have to accept it as nothing more than a cultural difference. Japan is gonna Japan. Just look past it and you would see a pretty damn cool game with fantastic art. I've only played the original VC which is in my top 3 games last gen so I am looking forward to how this one plays out.

Criticizing such blatant made-for-male-gazes character design has nothing to do with "reducing" said character to be just that or "boob-shaming". She might be a good character but that doesn't mean her character design isn't bad or a perfect example of the rampant objectification of women that is all too common in video games & entertainment industry altogether. If you don't understand how that character design is purely that way visually for titillation purposes, then you certainly shouldn't participate in this discussion as if others are demonizing big breasted women. Stop acting as if these developers are trying to make stand of how big breasted are treated poorly, they aren't. There's a single reason why she has big breasts and that's because they know bewbiezzz sell for a certain audience.

And of course big-breasted women can be done well. Trails of Cold Steel has quite a few such characters who aren't generally objectified or shown from angles where their breasts are put front & center.

I see our new Valkyria has picked up from where Selvaria's post VC2 artwork left off, those are some absurd knockers.
The female lead's white dress looks hilariously out of place in the middle of that battle, can't say these designs are doing much for me.

You dont get to decide which discussions I participate in, and I haven't mentioned boob-shaming or demonizing once.

I just find the reactions to the design extremely silly. Don't turn this into some big discussion about social issues just because there's a character with big tits in some niche Japanese videogame.

As you said, there are games which do it in a way you prefer or find more acceptable, so everyone can have something they like. Even if the entire game is made just for horny otakus, not everything has to be made for everyone. It's not a difficult concept.

Feel free to criticize but I think that energy could be spent better elsewhere.

It's not doing all that much for me, either. It's not anywhere near as bad as Beyond the Sky; but from the sample, I wouldn't put it anywhere near Mitsuda or Alainn's better work.

Selvaria as an icon exists beyond the original game - even if she had more of a reasonable chest there, years of figurines, sequels, crossovers and spinoffs have cemented her prodigious heaving bosom as a central part of the identity of the Valkyria games.

This design is just fulfilling the expectations many hold of the series.

Seriously. I have very high tolerance for pandering big titty designs, but she looks just grotesque.

I knew a girl with a thin frame and a massive chest like that.

Trying to imagine her reading a comment like this, I bet it feels good.

I hope you made this post ironically, and that you actually really how completely dumb it sounds.

I'm interested in this game and thus I will criticize it about dumb decisions like this character design. It's extremely jarring in the game's context. There's a fucking war going on and they decide that's the perfect situation where they literally bring out the big guns & put them in the center of the screen. Like, it not only objectifies women, it assumes all men are the kind that they just HAVE to have titillation in the middle of the battleground in every game, otherwise they lose interest. It cheapens what otherwise looks like an interesting premise. I have no problem with pervy games. Let Senran Kagura be Senran Kagura. But this is not a pervy game so there's really no need for such character designs. It's just off-putting for the people who aren't desperate for bewbzz. Besides, this game doesn't exist in a vacuum and doesn't get a pass just because it's Japanese. These past few years have shown how problematic the treatment of women is still in this medium (& all entertainment), so yes, silly shit like that character design do warrant criticism.

And yes, the designs of the protagonists (?) don't really make sense either, but JRPG protagonists not dressing up for war is something of a staple for the "genre".

The only thing that reminds me of Valkyria are the giant tits, and those are even more ridiculous in this game, for some reason. I don't really care for one of the main characters dressing up for battle in a generic jrpgtastic dress with a big red bow on the back. That's so unlike the first game.

I love the design of the new valkyrie, reminds me of my gf except for the blue hair.
But really i just want to see more gameplay and a release date for the west.

Oh no, the fully clothed woman has big breasts.

Is this game confirmed for the west? Because we don't deserve a thing.

I can't really say anything other than "I disagree"

They way she is introduced and presented in the trailer is totally fine in context. The weird-ass fantasy war (which has a girl fighting in a dress, but I guess that's also somehow problematic?) stops the moment she is introduced, she seems to be extremely powerful and so the focus is on her. How is that in any way jarring in the game's context?

She just also happens to have big breasts. YOU reduce everything to that single aspect, and it's silly. She's not a character that is just there for titillation and fanservice. It doesn't objectify her at all. It doesn't cheapen anything. This isn't a Quiet situation, where the criticism is warranted. It's just a character aspect that you don't agree with, and you're trying to turn it into something more.

Everyone's going crazy about the big boobs but I find the girl with the white dress looks way more silly and out of place.

It's a shame, specially comparing it with the original which had way better and even character designs

I like the character designs so far (And honestly prefer the MC design more then Welkin) but I don't like the Princess running around in a white dress on the battlefield, should have armoured her up a bit.

So far though I like everything else I see, hoping there are multiple mechas and not the one they keep showing. Nagoshi Raw is going to discuss this game on Monday so fingers crossed we get a proper gameplay trailer then.

Really weird how this happens in every Valkyria thread.

disgusting? wow

Big boobs? "OMG GROSS HOW CAN ANYONE LIKE THAT"

Small boobs? "OMG YOU PEDOPHILE GET OUT"

Somewhere in betwee: "Yes these boobs are just right"

Its the three little piggies of boobs.

and that's how we ended up with the removed boob slider in Xenoblade Chronicles X

It's absolutely amazing how a thread about the music got derailed by tits.

Music sounds okay, not anything particularly special.

Yes, basically.

Its really ridiculous how much people around here will focus on boobs, all while insisting that they do not actually like large breasts.

But by god they will not fucking shut up about them.
