Valkyria Azure Revolution Extended Trailer [Soriku-approved topics only]

Based on the trailer and everything I've read about it, this game is capitalizing on the name and the acclaim of Valkyria Chronicles but doesn't embrace what made the first game great. No amount of telling me I'm not seeing it right is going to change that for me.

This is the problem with all of the "this isn't Valkyria chronicles!" posts.

This is explicitly not Chronicles, and has been made clear since the first announcement of this title. The standards one places on Valkyria Chronicles means absolutely nothing because this Valkyria Azure Revolution is something different intentionally so.

If they had named it Valkyria Chronicles 4, then i would say you'd have a point.

But they are are not saying, nor have they ever said that this is a Valkyria Chronicles game, or that fans who wanted Chronicles should be suckered in by this title, they said the exact opposite infact.

I love how on one hand I'm told my opinion is fine and then immediately also told I have an unhealthy way of looking at a medium.

I didn't meant to offend you? I'm sorry. It's just that I've noticed a trend in dismissing fantasy stories on the basis of "lacking realism" when the important thing in any story is the humanity of the characters, not the relative groundedness of the setting.

But they are are not saying, nor have they ever said that this is a Valkyria Chronicles game, or that fans who wanted Chronicles should be suckered in by this title, they said the exact opposite infact.

Hell, they're even remastering VC1 for PS4.

Yeah, I still can't take that design seriously. At all.

It's not even about the fact her breasts are big. It's that they're just totally unnatural, unproportional, and just looks ridiculous in comparison to her figure which seems fairly slim otherwise.

Rest of the designs seem pretty decent though.

Yeah, they look pretty unnatural. People who are saying that the criticism is all about large breasts and making stupid remarks about how we're shaming real women who have large breasts are missing the point. We're talking about a design that looks weird and unnatural, not just because the breasts are large.

Look at the way the shot is framed. The breasts are placed right at the centre for emphasis. The camera is angled so that the breasts is the focus as well, from a bottom to top (I can't think of a better way to describe it) to focus on the breasts. Even if you were to compare to the shot of Selvaria that was posted in this thread, it's totally different. The focus wasn't place on her breasts.

They honestly look like balloons that are ready to pop anytime.

So we've gotten to the point where the topics have to be constantly sidetracked because of people's personal distaste of modern anime character designs, even though Valkyria has basically always been as anime/mu as it gets.

That's fine if you have that opinion, but it really has nothing to do with this game itself, so its really off topic. My advice is to stay away from games that have any modern anime art style designed games by default.

Leave it to those of us who actually want to discuss the game

We want to discuss the game. Criticism about character designs are as valid a discussion point as any other topics that can arise.

I think the game looks good in general and I'm interested to know more about it. But character design criticisms shouldn't be excluded. I think the other two main characters look really good.

Fantasy game.

Want me to make a list of unnatural things in the trailer?

I assure you, boobs aren't at the top of the list.

That's not a good defence for the design. Might as well just make the character have breasts as heads just because its fantasy. Would make her look more interesting.

That shot is an incredibly standard "villain looking down on the heroes" shot.

Her breasts are in the middle because...thats where breasts are located? There are lots and lots of ways for a camera to go out of its way to emphasize breasts, and this shot is not one of them, unless you literally are saying that any appearance of breasts is inherently sexual in nature.

And once again, the people who say they don't like large breasts are the ones who won't stop focusing and talking about them.

I still don't get why anyone would use the Valkyria brand name and then make a completely different game. For what purpose? Valkyria doesn't even have any form of brandpower.

To get fans of the first one to pay attention to this game. Plus it seems to be using some of the systems of the original series.

Sequels sell more. Valkryria might not be the strongest brand, but it's still stronger than a new ip. Look at Far Cry Primal and Until Dawn Rush of Blood. Its pretty common.

The series got 3 games in Japan, it had to have some brandpower to be able to warrant putting out 2 sequels. They probably just want to try to get some of the vans of the old series over.

sorry but this character design just makes me roll my eyes

lolanime4qsa2.png
Same. The fact some people find that design appealing is mind boggling.

I'm sorry if i came off that way, its not my intention at all.

it just feels like every time a topic about this game comes up, its always about how "ew the art style sucks cause its SO ANIME" or "lol boobs, how disgusting".

Like..i understand we have a small amount of things to talk about based on what we've seen, but what about the scenario, or the enviorments, or what the battle system might be like? Soriku also got tapped for this, it just feels like people are so insistent on diverting the topic away from those of us who want to really talk or speculate about what the game will be like substantively.

I understand. I think that generally, we can all stand to sound less judgmental. Which I feel like the core of the problem most of the time. People judging something you like feels like they're judging you personally. (as an aside, imagine if somebody respond to the OP with "Oh wow that music made you cry? You might want to expand your horizon.")

It's just that it is generally an important topic to me (no, not just boobs, lol). While I know many think that it's silly. While I know that many think that it's silly, when it all boils down to it, I just want to be heard and understood, and have the chance to convey that. If people chose to ignore it, then I think it's fair, but to be practically told that it has no place in discussions and literally quarantined to a separate thread really sucks.

I'm glad there's a topic about the preview that's not just boobsgate, because while I do have opinions on the subject, it just feels like a conversation that never goes anywhere on GAF. But besides that, there's just not a whole lot to discuss. We don't know how the game really plays, besides that magazine preview that I can't even find in the thread anymore (need to look closer). A couple of music making-of videos and a trailer that's mostly cutscene footage we've already seen is fun to watch, I guess, but it's not the game. We still don't know very much about the game. We don't even know what the story is or who the characters are; we literally only know about what they look like (unless I missed another magazine preview). In lieu of that, I'm not that surprised that people are nitpicking the tiny details because we have so little else to say besides "yup that music is nice."

If there's not a whole lot to discuss then people don't have to keep posting. Just let the thread die. The VC remaster is coming out Feb 10 along with this game's demo so we will have a good feel of the gameplay soon, until they decide to make adjustments to it.

I see Valkyrie azure revolution threads still turn out exactly the same as they did back when it was announced. O well i'll try and wiggle thru the bs.

I wonder how gunplay would work in this. I mean if they are going for more of an action rpg will it still give you the ability to aim and so on im very interested

Because they still had ideas and concepts they wanted to use from Valkyria, but in a different manner? "Why does anyone ever make spinoffs that are different instead of just making a new IP?" If that was the case, things like FF Tactics would not exist

Don't know how people can be excited for a game when we haven't even seen any gameplay whatsoever yet. Just looks like your stereotypical JRPG game in these teasers.

Well, Final Fantasy is the second biggest RPG brand in Japan so using the brand name makes sense for Square.
And the main series didn't stop to get new titles.

Can't believe complaining about big boobs in an anime type game. That shit is pretty much standard now if you don't like it might as well don't buy it. Then go on and talk about realistic not every got damn game has to be like the west and act like a simulator. I play games to have fun not play a realistic simulator.

Precisely. Talking about realism. What? It is a bloody video game. It can do whatever it wants.

I guess they are trying o find a middle ground in what was done in Shining Resonance and the traditional VC games.

They stated it was an action rpg, and if this is really the case, I am expecting it to be more like Shining Resonance full map battle, where you would battle almost all groups of enemies that were on a big map without any break.

I think they might use this to include a strategy element to it,

Alternate universe/spiritual relation or something like that. Probably technically canon but essentially unrelated to the original except in terms of general similarities.

The more I see of the game, the more I'm coming to accept this new Valkyria. It might just be more that I've accepted the old one might never return, so any substitute is better than none, but there we are.
okay, so sort of a spiritual successor but still being canon?

I remember wanting to play the original game way back on Ps3. glad it's getting remastered.

these games are all on playstation...so the protagonist should be another contender for a psasbr reboot
Its a spinoff and reimagining. Firstly, Valkyria Chronicles is no longer the 'main series'.

It is merely a subseries in an overarching franchise now Titled "Valkyria"
Yeah, notice how I said the valkyria franchise and not the valkyria chronicles franchise

In this franchise there is Azure Revolution, which is completely alternative universe with all new cast of characters, story and different gameplay.

And there is Chronicles which is the original series
wait, it is an alternative universe? is this confirmed? it seems others are under the impression that it is canon to the chronicles series even though it's not related

yeah man, wtf. seriously

Sarcasm.

The disgust in my previous posts in this thread are evidence of that.

Still, it's hard for me to believe you thought that post was even somewhat serious. I mean, "safety devices"? Seriously?
yeah, fair enough. i should've figured it out. i haven't been that active in this thread though so i didn't get to check out your previous posts.

Haha. I understand. It's cool. I've actually avoided the thread for a while.

There was too much "There's nothing wrong with it" and "So violence is okay, but boobs aren't?" going on to even bother engaging in conversation with people who use fallacies like that.

Why even use the Valkyria branding if they're making something that barely resembles the previous games in terms of aesthetics?

yeah I can definitely understand how going up against arguments like that could get frustrating & feel pointless. I agree with you though.

The way the shot is framed is rather incidental to me.

Of course, I'm more curious about the villain as a character than how she looks. After all, that's the more important part of the game and games, in general.

I will admit, though, that her breasts are a bit too big.

Other than the gameplay it's pretty got everything you'd find in a typical Valkyria game.

The main characters using swords and zooming around the battlefield put me off.

Namco released Tales of Zestiria, but that's unfortunately a step down from the last few games in the series.

Square Enix released Final Fantasy Type-0.

NIS released Disgaea 5.

There are a few others.

EDIT: Oops forgot to say JRPGs that weren't from existing franchises.

I guess its better than launching a new JRPG franchise. Have any non compile heart JRPGS been released for the PS4 and X1 yet?

Oh, out right now, there are two, I believe, not made by Compile Hearts. Others are slated for release this year.

Let's hope they're good.
