Valkyria Azure Revolution Extended Trailer [Soriku-approved topics only]

Big boobs are fine, but I don't like the outfit. The "boob socks" on the outfit (in combination with the corset) are what makes the character look ridiculous. Clothes like this don't even make sense in real life.

Thankfully this is a video game and not a documentary on realistic clothing.

Is there anything about the non-generic-soldier characters in that trailer that makes sense in a real world setting? Girl wearing white in a combat zone? Check. Rushing enemy battalions with swords? Check.

They're supposed to contrast the setting. JRPG protagonist/villain/person-of-note trope, for better or worse.

That's so unlike the first game.

That's kind of the point, though. Kakumei will follow this style, and Senjou will continue to be Senjou.

At least that's what they've been saying, we'll see if they actually make another Senjou game in the future. Really hope they do.

Right so then why is it not its own IP? I just don't understand.

As much as I love the look of this game I can't help wondering why they didn't make this a new IP. It looks so radically different from Valkyria Chronicles. Why not just call it "The Azure Revolution?"

It IS its own IP. Its Azure Revolution, not Chronicles.

It is based on the concept of Valkyria, that's why its still called that. Its like Nova Chrysalis in regards to the general concepts that are used in each game, but differently.

You should focus on the sentence that came before that:

My problem isn't that the clothing is unpracticle or doesn't fit the setting (I think the character with the white dress looks really cool). I don't like how the top of the valkyria magically snugs itself tightly around her two breasts. It looks silly and puts a heavy emphasis on her breasts instead of her overall character design. If the top would just normally fit around her breasts I would be happy with the design.

For the record, this game's design look absolutely amazing, and i wish Sega would stop being idiots and confirm it for the west already!

Yep, this continues to look great. However, still no gameplay so that doesn't mean much, sadly.

Cautiously optimistic.

I figured we wouldn't get far until the boob-shaming of well-endowed women started.

I know.

Criticizing such blatant made-for-male-gazes character design has nothing to do with "reducing" said character to be just that or "boob-shaming". She might be a good character but that doesn't mean her character design isn't bad or a perfect example of the rampant objectification of women that is all too common in video games & entertainment industry altogether. If you don't understand how that character design is purely that way visually for titillation purposes, then you certainly shouldn't participate in this discussion as if others are demonizing big breasted women. Stop acting as if these developers are trying to make stand of how big breasted are treated poorly, they aren't. There's a single reason why she has big breasts and that's because they know bewbiezzz sell for a certain audience.

And of course big-breasted women can be done well. Trails of Cold Steel has quite a few such characters who aren't generally objectified or shown from angles where their breasts are put front & center.

I'm interested in this game and thus I will criticize it about dumb decisions like this character design. It's extremely jarring in the game's context. There's a fucking war going on and they decide that's the perfect situation where they literally bring out the big guns & put them in the center of the screen. Like, it not only objectifies women, it assumes all men are the kind that they just HAVE to have titillation in the middle of the battleground in every game, otherwise they lose interest. It cheapens what otherwise looks like an interesting premise. I have no problem with pervy games. Let Senran Kagura be Senran Kagura. But this is not a pervy game so there's really no need for such character designs. It's just off-putting for the people who aren't desperate for bewbzz. Besides, this game doesn't exist in a vacuum and doesn't get a pass just because it's Japanese. These past few years have shown how problematic the treatment of women is still in this medium (& all entertainment), so yes, silly shit like that character design do warrant criticism.

And yes, the designs of the protagonists (?) don't really make sense either, but JRPG protagonists not dressing up for war is something of a staple for the "genre".

Ridiculous. From your remarks, there is nothing that could have been done in that trailer to make you be ok with the size of her breasts, because the size of her breasts is your problem. No camera angle could "hide" the size of her breasts. You would notice them. And you'd complain.

Yes, she was designed by a dude. Yes, probably because he likes big breasts, but that's irrelevant. People design characters they like. There's nothing wrong with designing a character with blue eyes because the designer likes blue eyes. There's also nothing wrong with designing a character with small breasts because the designer likes small breasts.

Like the other poster said, this isn't a Quiet situation. The character in that trailer was not posing for the player; she looked fierce, independent and strong. That's what matters.

So yes, what is happening here is absolutely breasts-shaming. It's shaming a character only because she has big breasts, and shaming the designer because he had the audacity to design a character with big breasts.

Women with big breasts exist, and they can and should be represented in games without having to be subjected to others shaming them out of a need to quell their puritanical anxieties.

sorry but this character design just makes me roll my eyes

I don't forgive you.

so valkyria is a franchise now. but is this game canon to the previous ones or is this sort of a reboot?

Alternate universe/spiritual relation or something like that. Probably technically canon but essentially unrelated to the original except in terms of general similarities.

The more I see of the game, the more I'm coming to accept this new Valkyria. It might just be more that I've accepted the old one might never return, so any substitute is better than none, but there we are.

Its a spinoff and reimagining. Firstly, Valkyria Chronicles is no longer the 'main series'.

It is merely a subseries in an overarching franchise now Titled "Valkyria"

In this franchise there is Azure Revolution, which is completely alternative universe with all new cast of characters, story and different gameplay.

And there is Chronicles which is the original series

Come on. Stop focusing on how the OP felt about the videos. Anyway, it's nice that Mitsuda is doing things. I wonder how much of the soundtrack will be him and not those who work under him?

I see GAF still thinks that women shouldn't be allowed to have large breasts. Damn those large-breased women!

I admit they do look a little odd, though. Maybe more than a little.

Lime sure did a good job of derailing this thread from the beginning and not posting again.

Since you consider my reaction to a part of the trailer with its camera work and its character design to be derailing, I don't see how any further discussion or counter-arguments by me in this thread would be useful for you.

Besides, I didn't want to "derail" or turn the thread into anything it wasn't supposed to be about - I just posted my reaction to something that I consider to be bad character design on a number of levels. I like Valkyria Chronicles as a game a lot and I really is/was hopeful to get a console sequel to it, so it just disappoints me when I encounter what I consider to be an eye-rolling character design. I can't control how other people choose to act or reply to my disappointment. But seeing the responses to my post, it's clear that such opinions aren't welcome. Anyway, I just pointed out something in the trailer that disappointed me. No need to argue about it. This isn't a matter of who's right or wrong, just a personal preference on character design.

Those are batteries ofc

They're twice as large as last game because she's twice as powerful

Pay attention please Lime

Does this have a lot of reused footage or something? I swear I've seen this trailer already

I'm confused. I'm playing Valkyria Chronicles on PC and at worst, the character design in that game is at least tolerable, so why have they gone with such puerile character design for this one?

Granted I haven't played very far in to VC1, but the style and setting were huge selling points for me... and the glowing power swords and embarassing Soul Calibur-esque reject at the end of this trailer just feel like box checking tired, childish anime themes. I would've written it off much more quickly if the first game hadn't already established itself otherwise, and I don't think this aesthetic is doing Sega any favors in trying to find a market for this series in the west.

Yeah, the first game had nothing like this
oh wait

after that the series turned into a high school simulation
My guess is mainstream western appeal is not their primary goal, thank god

Loved the music, liked the extended footage, can't wait to see the actual gameplay. It's going to be soon when Battle System 1.0 demo hits!

I knew it was somewhat present in the first game but to the extent that this new trailer goes to? I'd have to play more of it, but that example doesn't seem as egregious a departure from the original game's aesthetic. For starters, she's at least approaching anatomical correctness in that screenshot.

It's a super fantastical video game

The main guy character is wielding a weapon almost as large as his body

Let it go

If this game didn't have the Valkyria name on it, I don't think I would have been nearly as disappointed with that trailer as I am. The character design is part of it, but then again, I'm attached to the characters from the original, so maybe part of my reaction is disappointment at not seeing them again. I'm open to being wowed by new characters, though-- we'll see when the game gets here.

As for the boob lady, yeah, that bums me out as well. I think it's because I knew a lot of women who loves the original game, and by going all-in on this grotesque character trait, the game sends a message that the developers don't really care whether or not any women play this one. Who knows, maybe they really don't. Goddamn, would that ever be disappointing.

Yeah, no large-breasted women ever play games.

And there are definitely no women who like large breasts

The Valkyries in this series always (or mostly) have gigantic boobs. I personally find them really disgusting, but apparently it's their trademark.
That's not wholly the case. The Valkyria in VP2 and Alicia are not titty monsters. (Although, the VP2 was a loli.) The dev team chose to go with this design, which basically the easy route. They could come up with better designs.

You can't be serious

I do not believe this is a serious post

Pretty sure there are a good amount of people who would agree with you. Just my opinion as well.

Either way hopefully there will be announce for western release.

Danielle Riendeau stopped enjoying Dragon's Crown because of character designs like this. That bums me out. I don't enjoy games as much when I know they're making other people feel that way. Yeah, there are also going to be people who don't give a shit, I'm just not one of those people.

I know I definitely stop playing games I enjoy when I read that random-ass people on the Internet don't like them. Yep. That's just the kind of guy I am.

You all feel so proud of me, right?

So 1 person stopped liking a game, so you stopped liking it?

On the other hand, my wife loves the Dragon's Crown ladies. We have almost 200 hours of play together.

You can't pin one person's distaste for a design on an entire gender. Some men will like character X, and some men will dislike character X. It's not about men, it's about the individual. Ditto for women. Some women like large breasted characters, and some will dislike them based on that trait alone. Dead or Alive, which gets a lot of criticism for its fan fare, actually has the highest female representation among fighting game players, I hear.
