I don't see how you're going to educate anybody by dancing around the correct term for people who engage in their behavior. Shit, if anybody calls me an 'asshole' my reaction isn't to immediately circle the wagons and bunker in without changing myself, I reflect on whether or not I'm actually being an asshole. That's maturity. Same if someone says I'm being racist. I think about it. "Was I wrong? I certainly don't want to be a racist! Let me check myself before I decide to keep doing what I was doing just now."

That's a pretty straightforward lesson, if lesson-learning is what we indeed seek instead of tiptoeing around the obvious.

There is a grand difference between calling their actions racist and declaring them racists for it.

What they did was absolutely racist and they need to be punished accordingly but that does not necessarily mean it reflects on their actual beliefs of equality (at least from this particular act). Implies sure, and it can definitely be a red flag in case they either have a history or keep up this shit. But this single act should not be used as a branding iron that casts them out of society and instead into their own pockets of disdain so they can just further cultivate upon that racist behavior.

Especially for teenagers it's incredibly important to actually teach them these moral lessons and what they did wrong than to just make them shell up and completely miss the lesson or even ingrain their defenses, or do we not actually want progress?


And no this isn't to say that racists don't exist, they're still very much prevalent in day to day life and news stories - but we need to properly identify racist beliefs versus racial insensitivity because the latter is more due to a lack of understanding or awareness which can still be learned.

As a white person I can attest that white people love to use this word when they are in a safe space. I.e no black people. It's really shocking when people I know that are super liberal, support BLM, and are super involved in politics and generally well versed in racial issues just yell, "Yeah! What, ni**a!" Reeducation is needed in a lot of places, it's a burden but that institutional racism is gonna keep thriving until we keep weeding it out patch by patch, and I mean that specifically for younger generations like theirs just aping shit likely passed down. I don't agree with doxxing but social media justice can still be a powerful tool to steer people in a different direction. No offense but direct conflict and criticism are all things young adults need to learn to deal with. Every conversation isn't going to take their sensitive little feelings into consideration nor should they. I hope they never have an abrasive boss or coworkers if they can't take people ragging on them when they fuck up.

Not to mention learning social cues. I mean if they aren't completely daft then having many people rag on you should be enough to understand maybe they did something wrong.

Yeah all teenagers their age should have that commonsense. This is not something I would have done 5 years younger than these girls. I mean for crying out loud, even if you are racist, you're at a school (A) and somebody is taking pictures of it (B). There is stupid and then there is beyond stupid. They all apparently had twitter accounts too so they aren't new to social media and how it works and should know about stories like this.

That being said, I imagine the suspension and all this very bad attention this has got is punishment enough. Hopefully they learn from it and acknowledge that maybe they are a bit racist. I hope they can still go to the school they want.
