Because 17 year olds are fucking stupid and do stupid things. That doesn't mean they are free from criticism or discipline, it just means it's not shocking when they do stuff like this.

And yes, I knew plenty of kids in high school who would say nigger to get a rise or a laugh out of others because it was and is inherently offensive. Some kids thought it was funny, some thought it was offensive. All of the ones I'm still aware of grew out of that, though, as they became actual adults.
Yes nigger is hilarious. They were racists and if they no longer do it then they grew out of their racism, but they sure as shit were racists.
alright guys, i genuinely admit that the term racist apparently doesn't mean what i thought it meant and that it encompassed alot more than i originally thought

all i can say is my bad on this one
Your bad huh? Not going to take me up on my offer to call us niggers huh?

the word is offensive to people and brings them discomfort, and i understand why, so no i dont go around using it

i just dont think its a word that automatically makes you a racist if you use it, that doesn't mean i dont think the girls should be punished for their insensitivity, they absolutely should, and if they have a history of racial issues in the school then bring the hammer down on them

Using racial insults, as in insulting people because of their race doesn't make you a racist. Lord I've heard it all now.

Tweet link. Did a quick search and found nothing.

Jesus I can HEAR them... "HUR HUR HUR HUR HUR HUR HUR"

I will never get tired from how excited some people get when they think they found a loophole for saying the n-word.

Doesn't make you a racist to say so let that shit fly free.

that was before you guys expressed to me that the definition of racist and racism encompasses alot more than i originally thought it did

and i just want to go on record again saying that i never thought what the girls did was ok

which is why i wouldn't even dream of doing what you're asking me now, regardless of whether i thought doing so would make me a racist or not

Wow, this goes on the idiot level like WHITE OUT and black face Halloween costumes.

There must be something about high school seniors that just brings out the idiot in them.

Why is this a white thing? Why don't you see other races doing this as much as white people?

This is terrible, no doubt, I don't mean to change the subject slightly, but I don't understand why this is so prevalent among whites. Is it a symptom of being on top?

Growing up it was mostly a white thing. And in the media it seems to me to be a white thing. What gives? To be racially insensitive like the frat parties in the past is what I'm driving at, my question is not meant to be limited to that word.

Whos saying this is OK? The debate here is whether or not this was a real declaration of racism or teenagers being stupid and insensitive.

I plant my flag firmly in the later. They were suspended, and I think they should probably have to make some kind of apology to the black students at their school.

Some people in here seem to want this to completely fuck up their lives by keeping them out of college or following them forever, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Kids at 14 and 15 are going to be making life-changing decisions all the time: Should they study? What sort of extracurriculars can contribute to their applications? Should they take more honors courses and do okay, or take regular courses and do spectacular?

And if a university can judge someone for a course they got a C in because they were too lazy to study for a final, they sure as hell better judge someone not only for being racist enough to spell out an epithet with shirts and a group of friends, but also being stupid enough to be photographed doing it.

No it's an incredibly ugly, offensive word, and because it's so offensive some kids would use it for shock value to get a rise out of others, and seeing as how they were dumb kids they thought it was funny. Then they get older and realize "oh, that was pretty shitty of me."

My first inclination would be to call them ignorant and insensitive, but not necessarily racist, as the word would be used more for shock than any sort of racial derision (as inescapable as that aspect is). To that point I never actually heard it used in reference to a person, because even the kids back then knew that there would be a difference about using it as shock and using it as an attack.

God damn I must have missed the memo where you save 'racist' for special occasions, instead of being so cavalier with its application to very obvious racism.

Is it too late to post "they're just kids, they shouldn't face repercussions, you did dumb shit as a kid, everybody is racist in private but they just did this at school" ?

First.... Why

And

Damn the lady that posted that pic is roasting those girls. She's tweeting Colleges and major news outlets the pics. I'm assuming the girls are accepted to those colleges she's tweeting

Oho they will not enjoy the fallout from this. I really hope the internet kinda overlooks this one so no ones life gets utterly ruined. I mean these girls are morons but still.

i'd say they probably were racists, because only somone with some sort of racist inclination, would run to a clearly racist word rather than any host of swear words. They're also not prepubecent and have lived long enough in the world to know what that word means.

I'm not sure why it's such a shock for people to learn that teenagers can in fact be racist.

A kid in my high school got a talking to for wearing a Fcuk (it's a UK brand) shirt, if they were caught doing this shit there they would be suspended.

It's definitely a symptom of being on top and being insulated and sheltered from any kind of racial stress. Being on top, white people are not used to being told by other races not to do something.

As a response, some become reactionary because they're so accustomed to always getting their way. They can't stand that x minority can use a word, and they can't. And then of course you can simply factor in white supremacy as well.

Millenials are probably less racist than the generation that preceded them.

That being said, that is a millenial ass way to be racist.

I agree with this, tho they are on the really really tail end of the millennials if they are even in that generation. I've noticed this wave of kids the last few years have been trying to be "har har" funny.

Idk, the prevalence of social media has me unsure about this. The most racist shit I see comes from millenials, though of course they probably make up the largest percentage of social media users. It seems like for the most part the racists of the previous generation still know better than to say how they really feel.

Hooboy at people saying that "Well there was a larger message. . ." -

Right. And they just so happened to choose THAT grouping of the ladies afterwards.

I don't think we have enough data yet to determine if a generation that has yet to start dying off is more or less racist than the one that is currently dying out. Jury's out until we're all dead I'm afraid.

Their lives are generally so easy and painless in comparison to their peers that they're in their own reality. A safe space, if you will.

Without any personal context and experience with marginalization and oppression, everything feels fair game to them.

When I was their age I used to think how once the older gen got old or died off this crap would cease but....
