Desert Vista High School students spell out racial slur on t-shirts

Oh fucking please they're getting what they so deserve. I hope they live miserable lives for now on.

I mean they live in Arizona. /rimshot

But no, we shouldn't wish for the full wrath of the types of people who stalk and harass them, which is what the twitter account in the OP seems to want to invite on the girls by outing their names and what schools they're applying to. A suspension, written apology and maybe some community service with the three or four black people who live within a fifty mile radius of them would be therapeutic and sufficient. No real reason to wish for more than that unless what you want is a piece for yourself, which is kind of unhelpful.

Define progress if you don't mind.

Diminishing racism would be progress, which of course requires actually teaching people to be sensitive of others

A world in which white racists never have their feelings hurt.

Do you think this baseless shitpost is in any way helpful to discussion? Of course people should feel bad for doing bad things and that shame can teach them. I would like for these girls as well to be ashamed of their actions and to come out of this more aware of the meanings of their actions in the future.

I don't see how you're going to educate anybody by dancing around the correct term for people who engage in their behavior. Shit, if anybody calls me an 'asshole' my reaction isn't to immediately circle the wagons and bunker in without changing myself, I reflect on whether or not I'm actually being an asshole. That's maturity. Same if someone says I'm being racist. I think about it. "Was I wrong? I certainly don't want to be a racist! Let me check myself before I decide to keep doing what I was doing just now."

That's a pretty straightforward lesson, if lesson-learning is what we indeed seek instead of tiptoeing around the obvious.

So this is basically the shirt equivalent to spelling "HELL" or "BOOBS" on a calculator, in that its not really meant to be a declaration of racism so much as "tehee, we can spell a bad word!"

Is it fucking stupid tho? you betcha
Lord there's always one.

Or in this thread, two or three or four...

Point is, who the fuck cares? Who looks at these dumb teenage girls spelling out a word that they don't even understand why it could be seen as offensive by the dumb dumbs? Literally every black person I know would just laugh at this shit and more importantly the people being offended by it. Then again, I don't really know many people from the suburbs or high class neighborhoods. My understanding is those people are more often easily offended and also secretly racist.
Wtf is this shit ? Lol just because you know two black people who may not care, doesn't mean this should be ignored or these girls should be let of the hook. That's the main problem right there people not effected by it always has this dumb ass mentality of "It doesn't happen to me so black people should get over it." Wtf.

Honestly, there's no real benefit to anyone on the periphery in roasting these nippers. The minute it was public it was pretty much done.

Although to be honest I don't think these are the kinds of brains open to racial enlightenment either

Quote one single post that says this please.

There is a grand difference between calling their actions racist and declaring them racists for it.

What they did was absolutely racist and they need to be punished accordingly but that does not necessarily mean it reflects on their actual beliefs of equality (at least from this particular act). Implies sure, and it can definitely be a red flag in case they either have a history or keep up this shit. But this single act should not be used as a branding iron that casts them out of society and instead into their own pockets of disdain so they can just further cultivate upon that racist behavior.

Especially for teenagers it's incredibly important to actually teach them these moral lessons and what they did wrong than to just make them shell up and completely miss the lesson or even ingrain their defenses, or do we not actually want progress?

And no this isn't to say that racists don't exist, they're still very much prevalent in day to day life and news stories - but we need to properly identify racist beliefs versus racial insensitivity because the latter is more due to a lack of understanding or awareness which can still be learned.

I think you missed his point (and inadvertently proved it). There is a strong pushback against labeling people as racist whenever they do racist shit. You see it all time even on here "Insensitive, yes, racist? No" "They're dumb but I wouldn't call them racist" etc.. People are so scared to label someone a racist when it's exactly what we should be doing. Stop making excuses for them.

In his memoir George W. Bush said that the worst day of his presidency was when Kanye West said he hated black people. Not 9/11, not Hurricane Katrina, not the invasion of Afghanistan or Iraq, fucking Kanye West calling him a racist was the worst day. That just go to show you how afraid white people are of the R word.

Oh fucking please they're getting what they so deserve. I hope they live miserable lives for now on.

Your reasons for thinking this being?

They spelled out "nigger" (well, with convenient asterisks) with big smiles on their faces.

If people want to take responsibility for trying to help people like this that's cool, but I wish they would quit trying to force that responsibility onto others. But I'm kind of a fatalist re: race in America anyway

As a white person I can attest that white people love to use this word when they are in a safe space. I.e no black people. It's really shocking when people I know that are super liberal, support BLM, and are super involved in politics and generally well versed in racial issues just yell, "Yeah! What, ni**a!" While we are playing a game or something. It just doesn't make sense why they think it is okay.

Mainly as it is just slang now. No one is using purposely trying insult someone. Was in high school last year, college now and hear it commonly as greeting or saying. When you hear the word so often, it really just becomes another word.

They were stupid enough to coordinate spelling a racial slur with t-shirts. There's ignorance, and then there's being malicious.

Oh they're def dumb, but I still think these girls have the capacity for change in perspective, even if it takes the brunt of social media to force it down their throats foie gras style.

Reeducation is needed in a lot of places, it's a burden but that institutional racism is gonna keep thriving until we keep weeding it out patch by patch, and I mean that specifically for younger generations like theirs just aping shit likely passed down. I don't agree with doxxing but social media justice can still be a powerful tool to steer people in a different direction. I guess I just don't think its too late for these giggly naive children to learn from their mistakes vs cletus in the backwoods still rockin the cb radio as their sole connection to the outside world.

The responsibility should be on the adults in their lives. It can't be on random internet people so don't feel bad for your fatalism. You and I can't do anything to help these kids see their wrongs and improve their lives.

Oh fucking please they're getting what they so deserve. I hope they live miserable lives for now on.

They're kids, they need help.

Forcing them to change won't solve anything, they'll end up being bitter and will just 'hide' their racism. Some people just don't have the capacity to empathize.

No offense but direct conflict and criticism are all things young adults need to learn to deal with. Every conversation isn't going to take their sensitive little feelings into consideration nor should they. I hope they never have an abrasive boss or coworkers if they can't take people ragging on them when they fuck up.

Not to mention learning social cues. I mean if they aren't completely daft then having many people rag on you should be enough to understand maybe they did something wrong.

I hate to tell you but that doesn't help racism or their personal development.

I'm in my early 20s and can say I had more common sense at that age.

Yeah all teenagers their age should have that commonsense. This is not something I would have done 5 years younger than these girls. I mean for crying out loud, even if you are racist, you're at a school (A) and somebody is taking pictures of it (B). There is stupid and then there is beyond stupid. They all apparently had twitter accounts too so they aren't new to social media and how it works and should know about stories like this.

That being said, I imagine the suspension and all this very bad attention this has got is punishment enough. Hopefully they learn from it and acknowledge that maybe they are a bit racist. I hope they can still go to the school they want.

They're kids, they need help.

They're around my age , I'm not even 7 months removed from HS yet. If I did something stupid like this I'd expect to suffer the consequences. These "women" are about to be in the real world soon, time to grow the hell up.

Oh fucking please they're getting what they so deserve. I hope they live miserable lives for now on.

Personally, I would hope they come to see the error in this and change. They just being miserable and still racist does no good to anyone.

This is the dumbest thing I've read today, thank you.

You're a kid too then. It seems you could also use some growing up. The kind of racism and ignorance they're displaying isn't some inherent quality but is instead learned, if they're ostracized from everyday society because of this incident then they will have nowhere else to turn but to further dive into racism and ignorance.

They certainly aren't beyond help and teaching.

Edit: no offense meant btw

Educate them on the meaning of the word and have them apologize. No need to have a witch hunt for some stupid kids.

They'll probably learn a lot from this whole ordeal.

This is is the most racist shit I have seen so far his year. Like damn I hope they can only get into community colleges after this

It shows.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but the things you're condoning are lacking in the same kind of perspective that they were lacking when they made their decision. They deserve punishment, not unbridled anarchistic hellfire from wackos around the world.

Keep in mind this is in Phoenix

most racist shit in AZ comes from there

A bunch of scared ass racist white people got together and thought it was a good idea to pass a law to profile, stop, detain, and demand papers from brown people. The federal government had to come in and shut them down. That's AZ.

Why do people feel the need to cuddle racists?
I mean, all I'm advocating for is not condemning them to a lifetime of misery. They're young enough to be able to turn around and make their lives better, after appropriate repercussions.

Heh obviously I realize that. Doesn't make it okay though.

Frakin Joe Arpaio. One of the worst people ever, and people I know actually idolize the guy. Despicable.

Man oh Man am I glad social media didn't exist when I was in High School. if it did, half of my school would have probably been suspended.

Teenagers acting stupid. In other breaking news, water is wet. Sun is hot.

There's not much to hunt when they post smiling photos lol. And I'm pretty sure high school students in America know what "nigger" means!

But, I do agree that there's not much to be gained from cooking them

I don't think high school kids are much better behaved now than they were before. It's just that because it is out there and is a thing now, kids know the actual consequences involved. As these ladies should have.

There's a difference between using the one that ends with and "a" and the one with "er".

what does Arpaio have to do with drafting legislation?

Well I was particularly talking about his department and all the profiling they were involved with and the resulting investigations. Phoenix also has/had some crappy people in office like Jan Brewer. You're not going to get any argument from me about how crappy politically AZ is as somebody that votes blue in a red state. It has a lot of downsides especially for minorities.

Any update or comment from the students or school of anyone since the picture was posted?

The school district has condemned the photo, but they're not going comment on disciplinary actions. Rumor mill says they've been suspended.

You think they don't know what it means? They didn't just stumble onto the word and think it would be an amusing word to spell out. They knew exactly what they were doing, they just didn't expect to get caught. Let's all stop making excuses for the little racist shits.

Seeing as how the replies in this thread are exactly like the ones in the "Fraternity chanting the n-word" I thought I would quote massive:
I guess people who want to say racist things feel comfortable knowing someone's got an excuse for them at every age

Teenagers: All teens say dumb things
College: Not really adults, have their whole lives ahead of them
Late 20s: Were probably sheltered, need to be educated (usually by the minorities they shit on)
30s~50s: Hey, they need to work and have families (which are not more important than racist Facebook post under their real name!)
50s~60s: They're a product of those times, can't blame dear old grandma/grandpa
60s~: All the racists will be dead soon

repeat

As long as we don't throw every racist teen into the wood chipper for their racism then I think we can find a middle ground between "destroying their future lives" and "making excuses for them".

There's zero utility to blowing up their entire lives, it will only drive them further into their hatred.

Of course, I've always said that the onus is on their white peers and adults to guide their education. It can't but up to the oppressed to educate their oppressors.

That's a pretty hateful pic to be smiling and laughing about.

Tough one - I'm fine with them being called out on it, but the wrath of the internet is too great a punishment, especially with their names now being known.

On the flipside, I find it funny that people get riled up when somebody points out their stupidity. Guess what? If you didn't do stupid, hateful things like this, nobody would be posting your stupidity on the internet.

How can you get mad at someone for something YOU did? It's not like lies are being told about you.
