Emily Rogers: Nintendo Working on Unannounced Wii U Game [Update: Paper Mario]

since Nintendo has a huge boner for re-releasing wii games on the wii u I'd put my money on this being a port of super paper Mario.

I don't know about other guys but I'm not calling Nintendo lazy developers. They're far from it.

They have small-ish teams and work really hard producing great content, standing toe-to-toe with Western studios who have have massive 800+ teams. That itself is an incredible feat.

I'm calling some of their baffling design decisions to repeat the same themes without any shred of originality inherently lazy.

I'm not calling them lazy, I'm just saying they're lazy. It's totally different.

A new Paper Mario would be great. Not super Optimistic with how the last few games were, but if its even on Par with Super Paper Mario that would still be enjoyable.

If it's on par with Super Paper Mario, I won't be touching it with a 10 foot pole, and I'll forever write off the Paper Mario series as trash from here on.

Right now my feelings towards the Paper Mario series echo how I felt towards Rare for years. As in, they had their glory days, but have been fucking around ever since, and now I don't care.

The first two PM games were incredible, but since then the series has been garbage. Super Paper Mario was the single most disappointing game I've ever played. It was a travesty to go from two of the beat RPG's ever to a shitty platformer that didn't play or look good at all. It wasn't just a poor Paper Mario gane, it was a poor gane period.

I haven't played Sticker Star, but I've heard it's mediocre, so I have no intention of doing so.

The Paper Mario crossover in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is spectacularly lazy; it contributes very little whatsoever. The gameplay is pretty much unchanged from other M&L games, we don't get to visit the Paper World, and there are zero Paper Mario characters other than paper versions of Mario, Peach, Bowser, Kamek, Bowser Jr, and Toads. In other words, a chance to revisit classic PM locations and see old PM characters is pissed away.

I sincerely hope that this new PM is a return to form, but I'm not going to be expect it to be. Nintendo have to earn my optimism back for the Paper Mario series.

I dunno. Paper Mario ain't bad but I was hoping for something different. We have had a new Paper Mario on 3DS (sure, some people didn't like it but still).

Super Paper Mario has the best Mario story, has a good mechanic used in creative ways and works incredibly for what it is. Completely disagree with it being a bad Paper Mario game, even less with it being a bad game at all.

Being the most optimistic here, if we do get a Paper Mario Wii U game, along with Pikmin 4, along with the rumored Diddy Kong Racing game then the Wii U would have a pretty strong 2016 that rivals the previous years in terms of content.

Is there some new rumor I've missed?!?!

SPM does have a great story and great writing but imagine if that effort to create an experience you get invested into also had the gameplay from TYD? It wouldnt have topped TYD but it would have definitely been a better game.

My biggest concern now with a new Paper Mario is Miyamoto. Will he let Intelligent Systems do their own thing or will we have to deal with no original characters and watered down everything like with Sticker Star?

I mean, it could have been better, and it's not my favourite Paper Mario, but it's not a bad or even mediocre game to the point where some should even give up on the series. It's different - but it all still works.

super paper mario depresses me. i love the idea of turning a 2d plane into a 3d world and switching back to solve puzzles. i know that spm wouldn't be a platformer, but i had wanted at least more than what we got in terms of challenge. maybe i forgot a lot of stuff, but it seemed to amount to turning the perspective 3d, walk behind a pillar, and then turn it 2d again.

Yeah, it could have used more. I love some of the things such as reading messages from different angles, or the background extruding to let you walk on it. I think it would have been better if it went all the way in one direction or the other, cause tbh I could definitely take a full puzzle game out of it, but I still think it's not as reductive as that.

i'm cool with the others though. i think sticker star works better as a paper legend of zelda game on a handheld. it's not built for long play sessions and it doesn't have to be. i think this upcoming wii u game might draw from the first two games or be more like super paper mario.

I agree, SPM is a great game. It just lacks a bit on the gameplay side, but everything else is top notch

LOL. F-Zero is a smaller title, hence why they stopped making games. Metroid is also B tier, and it's funny you say certainly not Metroid or Donkey Kong as if they're bigger than Animal Crossing when that's really, really not true in today's market (Donkey Kong was bigger at it's height, but that was ages ago)

I wasn't talking about sales, I was talking about a big announcement for fans. A new title in one of those series wouldn't just be a title that has fans - it would be worded differently. For sure.
A new Mario Soccer though? It has fans, but nobody would lose their minds if a new one would be announced like with the ones above. It's also much more likely to have been kept secret.

SPM feels very much like a paper mario game in spirit: the story, writing, and characters are all there. The designs are very abstract compared to the first 2 PM's but still feel like they work for the series. The gameplay is just average at best though and that really drags down the overall package.

You have some chapters which are just bland for their entirety (1, 5) and then others which have some really cool ideas but end up being tedious in execution (4, 6). There are some moments of greatness, like Francis's Fortress, the Whoa Zone, and Chapter 7 as a whole, but the bad definitely outweighs the good for me.

the issue I had withe the latest two episodes is related to their longevity. too long imho. I hope for proper rpg element but a more streamlined story

Sorry if this has been covered over the last hundred thousand posts but why did they immediately go from "wait til Monday!" to "oh hey it's Paper Mario"?

The NSMB games get progressively better as they make more. They're hardly padding. Level design in particular is far above anything from the NES or SNES era.

Exactly.

Criticize the art/ presentation all you want, but the leveldesign department is absolutely top off the line.

NSMBU is a top 3 2D platformer of all time trapped inside NSMB-presentation.

this is how I feel as well. Loved the concept, found the execution boring. And unlike others here the writing did nothing for me, and the character designs were too minimalistic to pique my interest.

But no matter what opinion I have on the game or the series, I don't see how the fact that Nintendo is still developing for Wii U internally could be seen by anyone as lazy.

Oh god, I'm squealing internally right now. Thousand Year Door is my favourite game of all time. Please don't fuck this one up Nintendo. Please.

Something tells me is a big RPG style one (like TTYD) or something like SPM.
Because its being done for console.

The idea of Miyamoto doing Sticker Star that way was becuase of the game being in portable (apart of the stupid surveys). He is the typical designer to say that design of a game for portable and console has to be different (portable more shorter and quick experiences, console bigger and longer).

Maybe he doesnt even interfere this time.

As much as this rumour excites me, it also saddens me to read so many saying it will be a great swansong for the Wii U.

The console is so young :( *sniffles*

Considering it's going to be replaced either this year or next, I'd say the support is inline with that we've come to expect from Nintendo. If anything, it may be above average. Wii wishes it had any support beyond Zelda after 2010, and it was Nintendo's best selling console!

Hardware install base doesn't mean much outside the system sellers on Nintendo systems. Splatoon on the Wii U will very likely sell more than Zelda Skyward Sword did on the Wii.

Iwata has already said that NX isn't a replacement console, but something completely different. The situation is not analogue to the Wii to Wii U situation. But of course it's very likely that increasing amount of development resources are allocated to new hardware platforms.

I did not know that about Splatoon. Very interesting.

He said that about the DS compard to GBA too, and unlike the Wii U, GBA was actually selling at the time. All it means is that Nintendo are trying a new direction, which they hope will disrupt the market.

all the chit chat about nintendo here anx there but..are we accepting the rumor as true?
when is this supposed to be revealed..e3?

Ow wow, surprising if true.

Just hope it's anything like the N64/NGC games and not like the Wii game. I played that for maybe 2 hours before giving up. It might have a nice story or whatever, but if the gameplay sucks I'm not gonna play it. Might as well release it as a cartoon then.

Hopefully not at E3, that needs to be completely dedicated to the NX Platform's games. I'm gonna say either next month or March. Definitely before Nintendo unveils the NX Platform so that this game, if it's indeed happening, doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Same for Pokémon Z, but that's another situation for another day.

It'll have to almost triple it's LTD sales to do so.

Iwata said the same thing about the DS.

We're overdue for a Direct aren't we?

But if the 16 nx hw is the portable maybe it is better to keep pikmin paper and Zelda for the e3

This turned into a "Nintendo is Lazy" thread? How??

Nintendo threads are veritable fonts of negativity on neogaf. It's tiresome sometimes when you actually want to see comments about the subject of the thread instead of peripheral grouses.
The latest thing is that every thread about a game that has amiibo functionality rehashes the same complaints about "locked" content.
I'm not surprised that a thread about an unannounced new game has turned into another complaint thread even though we know JACK SHIT about this game apart from what the franchise is.
Let me just f&%^g imagine that's it'll be a game worth complaining about and let me just start f&^*&g complaining from now. And of course, when the game is actually announced I'll complain in its thread too!

Never more appropriate:
