Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door - Am I missing something or is this game just not clicking for me?

I'm playing the remaster on Switch 2 atm and on Chapter 4 As Shadow MArio about 10 hours in, I've played this a bit on Switch 1 on its release and dropped it as I've just finished Super Mario RPG and was burnt out on 2 in a row

Don't get me wrong the art style is cute, the characters can be funny, but the game, I dunno its not clicking yet, does something completely wild happen or something?

If it doesn't click with you during Chapter 3 (Glitz Pit), then it's not going to. If you played/liked Expedition 33, then it's the Mario and Luigi RPGs that you're looking for. The battles are more involved when it comes to button press and timings.

Buying Super Mario RPG on Switch for $60 is likely my greatest Nintendo related regret of all time, and I had a Virtua Boy.

I loved the remake but I also loved the original. I can see someone not liking it, especially since Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi pretty much do better than what RPG started.

Surprised you gave it 10h if it didn't click.

Chapters 3 and 4 are probably my favorites. It's probably not a game for you.

Never played it back in the day.

I preferred superstar saga on the gba.

But this game is second.

The rest is fucking trash

I loved it back when it was released.
But when I played the remaster I got bored...
Super Parer Mario is the best of the series imo.
I would say Sticker Star is also better.

I do like the GBA and DS Mario and Luigi games to be fair

They put a lot of focus on character in story in TTYD, so it feels much slower than say the original Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi.

It's a good thing you're playing the remake, the original chapter 4 had you walk back and fourth from the furthest point to the beginning at least three times, more if it's your first time. They add a warp pipe in the remake to cut on that.

Never played it back on the GC, first time with the remaster. I loved it. The writing is so charming and I think the combat is quite engaging.

Chapter 3 and 5 are probably the best parts of the game, so if you don't like it yet, it's not going to get much better for you.

I played the original when I was a kid and loved it, so I think you have to play it with a son or daughter to really enjoy it as an adult. Or just have nostalga for the original.

or me was the crea

If I'm playing something that is a beloved classic or something like that, I'll give it extra time. I beat my head against civilization for years before I finally got it. Tried it maybe 4 times over 10 years, and I always went back because I figured that many people couldn't be wrong. Worth it, of course. That's happened with lots of games.

It's fine, not every game needs to be beloved by every person who plays it. There were a small number of outlets in 2004 who didn't think it was that great. It is usually thought of as the peak of the traditional turn-based Paper Mario RPG games, before the series was turn upside down and watered-down and essentially ruined by 2010-era Nintendo upper management (It must be innovative, it must be unique, NPC characters can't look different, it can't have a strong story, "turn-based RPGs are boring", etc). BUT, that's a topic for another thread.

TTYD is normally elevated above Paper Mario 1 on N64 due to more post-game content, more overall challenge, more optional bosses, and overall even more creative and zany dialogue and antics, sense of grand scope and adventure. In particular, the Glitz Pit (Ch 3) and the final dungeon (behind the TTD) are the best parts of the game, with some fun moments to be had elsewhere, of course. If you didn't overly love the Glitz Pit and aren't feeling the game by Ch 4, if you're asking if the game magically transforms into something amazing that makes you unable to put it down, if it doesn't have it's hooks in you yet? No. It's fine not to like everything. Go play something that clicks with you.

I will also say, that 20+ years of hype, if you've never played it before, you are aiming to be let down. It's a game from 2004, warts and all. The Switch remake is a very, very faithful remake, that adds a bit of QoL here and there, but is basically just a complete visual and audio makeover only, not a "reimagined remake" in the vein of FFVII R.

For me and others, who had a GameCube and played it back in the day, it's aged well (mostly). Playing the game is sort of like coming home every year for Thanksgiving. It's that good. Other than the frustrating downgrade from 60FPS to 30FPS, the Switch remake is pretty great. Worth playing if you normally like turn-based RPGs, certainly.

Paper Mario 64 is actually what got me into RPGs. Prior to that I only played racing, fighting, and platformers. And now RPGs are like my favorite genre, by far.

Keep in mind I'm mid 30's and did play the original at some point, but I was a bigger Xbox and PS2 fan then so I missed or briefly played GC games, Metroid Prime 2 being a big miss at that time, by the time I got fully into the Wii I never went back to the older games and then the price skyrocketed and I loved Super Paper Mario instead

Is it different?

I don't think it is significantly, I'm different compared to 20 years ago though lol. Tastes change, standards change, etc.
It's a visual remake only, basically. With a bit of QoL here and there, but basically it is just a much, much better looking (and sounding) version of the GameCube game. Which is what it should be. Changing it would ruin it.

There is a tiny bit of new content, but it's post-game and unless you're a TTYD superfan, I'm not sure it would matter.

There was a 3DS Paper Mario RPG in development prior to Sticker Star that was basically a successor to 64 and TTYD. A classic, turn-based RPG with Mario and Mushroom kingdom characters and enemies. A faithful follow-up to TTYD.

Miyamoto received the demo of it, and his feedback was "This plays just like TTYD. This is boring". And two years later we got Sticker Star, and it was never the same again.

This is all true.

So having to wait 20 years just to get a remake of TTYD (while worth it!), and a step in the right direction, is still a bummer overall that it's like herding cats to get Nintendo to give us what we want (Us being 64 and TTYD super fans numbering in the 1-3 million range).

that is called i want to like it mentality a lot of us have when it comes to games.
I definitely have this. Over the years I've learned to sniff out the games I dislike earlier but no matter what, when I get a new game I'm all in in my own mind for the first at least 2 hours.

I want to like everything.

When you consider that I hate some of the games that many say are their favorites, it all starts to become so arbitrary, I'd almost rather play a game I hated than face the truth that "good" and "bad" is all in the eye of the beholder.

I played a bit on GameCube back in the day and finally did a full replay of the Remaster. I loved every second of it as it made me laugh out loud consistently and each new area topped the previous amazing area. It made me less sad about modern Mario RPGs being middling as I just don't think you can top the writing, locations, and scenarios of TTYD.

I have no issue dropping something I don't l;ike or will go away and give another shot to, Bloodborne was a major one for me, I wasn't enjoying it at release and then a few months later I went back and loved it, it clicked, one day I hope Sekiro does that

I played Paper Mario (N64) & Paper Mario TYD to completion a couple of years ago and I love them to bits.
They have something similar to Earthbound's oddball humor.

If they don't click for you, move along.

I thought paper mario on switch took out the rpg mechanics that were in super mario rpg, and that the wii game had, were those people wrong?

I like super mario rpg would I like paper mario? I thought the mario and luigi games wer co-op action games, lol

What Mario Nintendo games are turn based rpgs (outside of super mario rpg? ), that are on the switch?

If you aren't liking it by now, I don't think you will. Surprised you were able to finish (and enjoy?) SMRPG but don't like TTYD, it's widely regarded as the best Mario RPG.
