Posted this in the beta thread as well. 4.7gbs of vram usage just at 1080p max settings.
4gb cards are going to struggle a bit, yes?

If some people are stupid enough to push settings that your hardware can't handle, yes.

It is also possible the game simply caches as much data as it can, 4.7gb may not be "needed" in the strictest sense.

Regardless settings are there for a reason, just dial down texture quality and away you go.

You may be right about the caching as their minimum and recommended system settings don't call for 6 and 8gb cards. And of course you can always adjust settings. The point is that this is the first, and probably not the last, game I've seen utilize this much VRAM at 1080p which necessarily isn't a bad thing, this could be a very good thing for systems with 6, 8, and 12 gb of vram.

This has been a thing in many newer games so I'm hoping that's all it is.

Well VRAM demands are only going to increase, unless you are aiming for strict parity with consoles I suppose.

AAA multiplats being tailored to consoles has never prevented upwards scalability, I don't understand how some could entertain the idea that somehow hardware demands would not go up depending on settings.

In the worst case scenarion you will just have to lower the texture setting.

I know VRAM usage is only going to go up. But again, I've yet to see any game stretch VRAM limits just at 1080p. At 1440 and 4K? Yes, absolutely.

*This to all of you thinking about upgrading your GPU. Get something with higher capacity VRAM or wait for pascal or polaris.

Edit:

Apparently I've never enabled Afterburner/Rivatuner while playing FarCry 4, Shadow of Mordor, or GTAV on PC.

If you have followed PC gaming you know it's only a matter of months before high end games can break through the 6gb VRAM ceiling, at 1920*1080. Of course this will allow significantly higher texture quality than what they will end up shipping with on consoles, but that's PC gaming.

It is likely that Pascal and Polaris ship with 8gb of GDDR5(X) standard, or maybe 16gb of HBM2 for the cutting edge line.

Should be enough for a while but sooner or later some games will ask for more if you want the best textures.

Always been that way.
